Rule Change! In the past four years, Subeta has disallowed chatspeak, and had a list of allowed words. While this was (very) nice while we had a small user base, we've grown, and so has 'chatspeak'. People use it jokingly (I do! :P), etc.
So - we have removed the rule. If you've been given a warning in the past for it, your warning count will not go down, but that warning no longer counts (UAs can see what you've been warned for)
For those of you crying right now, because you're afraid of how the forums are going to start looking - don't worry. We've put in place a super cool chatspeak filter, that will slowly get better and better, and make annoying people less annoying ;)

Um. I have to say, I really hate the chatspeak filter. It's making things way too complicated.

I can't even type the number 2 now? Even when I'm talking about something with digits?

Also, there are some usernames that contain 'chatspeak', and it's hard to link to the user if there's a filter problem. Personally, I thought Subeta was running fine before this chatspeak do/dont. People can control themselves, can't they? (:

Ok, "pearoosters" and "Roosterroaches" went a bit too far. That was a total neopets move right there :/ If I want to talk about pretty birds or nasty house pests, I should be able to without looking like a total moron. DON'T FILTER THOSE WORDS. Dewdz please.

Ah Hoaxdog... your post entertains me (in a good way). I was going to post something similar to your post but I felt mine was a bit too strong and scrapped the "telling them off" idea all together. I do believe subeta has gathered a ton of elitist jerks. I guess thus is the result of having a decent (or in my opinion a Great) petsite. And it's not just for this either. Whenever a pet revamp is suggested everyone flames it to all heck and criticizes every little aspect of it until the artist probably has very little self-esteem left.

For those of you threatening to leave over the permitting of chatspeak: Please do so. We really DO need to thin the herd of fat-headed elitists. Here's a quick hint: It is COMPLETELY possible to be a knowledgable, mature individual without throwing a hissy fit at the sight of every non-spellchecked scrap of text. I'm not particularily fond of using chatspeak myself (with the exception of simple terms like lol, omg, srs, and all that good stuff), but I don't buckle my knees and sob when I see it posted on a public site. There's two very reasonable options: skip over it and shut up, you pompous little cretin- OR you can totally FIGHT THE MAN and leave the site. Go ahead- do it. I'm behind you all the way! But overall, thanks guys, for the hour's worth of sheer amusement over having read all these comments. Something told me I'd strike a goldmine- and I was right. I applaud you, Subeta's Elitists. I applaud you, your ego, your thesaurus, AND your spellcheck. Thumbs up!!

I'm glad for the change. I've always used things like BRB, LOL, OMFG. etc etc. I really don't see what's wrong with it. And to all of you complaining...just realize that subeta is an online community, not a college writing class. Some people enjoy talking like that because it allows them to be relaxed and lazy. Also I think people are confusing chatspeak (abbreviations like: LOL, BRB, OMFG, ROFL, etcetc) with 1337Speak (ie: 7yp1||g l1k3 d15). I doubt people will start typing/talking like that all over the site. And even if they do then you can just ignore it. It should be someones choice as to whether or not they type/talk literately. And IMO, saying LOL has more individuality and uniqueness in it than typing out Laugh out Loud. Oh and a lot of abbreviations are abbreviated for the sake of showing action. Just fyi.

Oh, simply....wonderful (and I do use that term ironically.) I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the fact that Subeta did not allow chatspeak, and was one place you could participate in forum discussion without being reminded of the depths of semi-literacy.

Well, forums can be avoided if the filters don't pan out, and hopefully, they will. And, if not shrugs, never underestimate the power of stupidity in great measure.

I, like most people here use Chat Speak once in a while in a jokily way, most of the time I try to spell things right and whatnot because I know not everyone on the net has English as a first language. If I'm typing to my mom and I accidently switch letters she won't know what I am saying. xD Gaurd vs Guard for instance and my mom uses more chatspeak than I do, she fails. X3;;

I always did appreciate the rules against the chat speaker...However, I was constantly finding myself having to fix myself seeing how I use it often when I paraphrase things n_n (I guess to show how stupid something is...)

Like... Dad: HAY BRITTANY! WHUT are you DOING ON A KIDDIE SITE? :V me: Doing what I do everywhere else, dad. Enjoying the internet. Dad: NO you 19 now. you NOT ALLOWWWWWWWWWWED me: That's nice, Dad. However, I enjoy spending my time here so I will refuse that commandment. After all, there are plenty of adults that go here too. It's not just a child's site. Dad: you MAKE ME SAD ]: RUNS OFF AND EMOZ

Which, I guess is always jokingly 8] I never seriously type like that. It's always joking, or paraphrasing something stupid that occurred.

So let's see how this goes n_n

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I'm okay with it, as I been to many other places that let chat speak live. I can understand people who use it most of the time, so no biggy.

I have no personal irks against this rule, coz as someone said before, it will eventually die down, but I do kind of wish we had implimented a private invite system beforehand... I don't really want a whole load of neo-players heading over here and 'spamming' up our forums.

From what I understand, "7yp1||g like3 d15" doesn't count as chatspeak. Or at least, it shouldn't. Chatspeak is more of shortcuts, like you or are or brb (let's see if the filter gets those ), used when people are too lazy to type out whole words. I agree that "7yp1||g like3 d15" should still be against the rules though.

Well, as long as this filter that makes chatspeak less.. terrible... then Im fine with it. Otherwise. I use the word please a lot because its an inside joke. Once I said it on accident on the Shoutbox and got a warning.

My friends and I will add please to the end of our sentences when we want to make a point, or when were bored, so I got pretty upset over getting a warning for something silly like that. As long as you keep it all tidy and not terrible like neopets, Im fine. ;3

That's cool for those who likes chatspeak, it promotes liberty, which I really agree with. I don't see why those who like chatspeak should not be allowed to use it.

Not cool for me too much, I am not english and don't understand chatspeak. But hopefully if I politely ask people who comment on my profile to NOT use chatspeak they will respect that

I've got to say, this is pretty tragic. The forums have very slowly but noticeably been going downhill even with the rule, and I'm afraid that they may soon become unbearable without it. I can't imagine how the filter is really going to be effective. I do not approve.

No! That rule was one of the best I've ever seen! It made Subeta my paradise escape from the idiots on Neo. The idea of the filters is slightly comforting, but still.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I'm afraid something within me just died. This chatspeak thing might be understandable with texting on cellphones, but online..? =/ It doesn't really show intelligence if you ask me, especially since people can't even spell most words correctly anymore.

Even with filters, I'm pretty sure people will be able to get around them somehow. I'm actually worried on how this'll go in the end. Then again, I'm hardly ever on the forums, so maybe it's best that it remains that way (aside from a gift brag, or something).

Well, that's my two cents anyway.
