Rule Change! In the past four years, Subeta has disallowed chatspeak, and had a list of allowed words. While this was (very) nice while we had a small user base, we've grown, and so has 'chatspeak'. People use it jokingly (I do! :P), etc.
So - we have removed the rule. If you've been given a warning in the past for it, your warning count will not go down, but that warning no longer counts (UAs can see what you've been warned for)
For those of you crying right now, because you're afraid of how the forums are going to start looking - don't worry. We've put in place a super cool chatspeak filter, that will slowly get better and better, and make annoying people less annoying ;)

While I completely understand the removal of chat speak from being a rule breaking offense; and that it will make it much easier for the Mods to find the real rule breakers...I fail to see the point of allowing it and then disallowing it via the new filter, isn't that quite contradictory? It will be interesting to see how this pans out...

I don't suppose it will affect my play though, as I will continue to think less of those who use it, taking the lazy way out and all, not to mention furthering the butchering of the English language altogether. I did think it was one of the rules that made Subeta stand apart from other sites, but Modding for chat speak usage must have been a small headache. =/ I hope those speaking another language won't be too confused by it though.

The rule wasn't getting rid of the chatspeak, but I'm sure a filter will Strange thing for me is it actually takes longer for me to type in chatspeak than to just type properly. So I type properly, though on occasion I use lolspeak, the language of the lolcats.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

I'm sorry to say that I don't support the change, even with the filter. It's just perpetuating the fact that people in real life are becoming less and less able to write properly due to chatspeak. I've had young TEACHERS who use chatspeak in their lessons, and when they try and write out the words properly, they spell them incorrectly. "Rite" is not something one does on paper, and "strait" is still only useful if you're talking about geography. Str8 and its kin are unacceptable...pretty much anywhere.

Not only that, but filters also are imperfect at best, and end up not fixing some things while completely mangling others. I just don't feel that it's coding/tweaking time well-spent. Sorry if I'm treating it too much like "SRS BZNS," but I'd rather this not become the third site I have to leave due to mass illiteracy.

Sorry but no. Especially the nonnative english speaking ones are going to be the ones that have the most trouble with the new nonrule.

If someone has poor english the last thing that he will use is chatspeak. There might be the common typos but believe me (or better read what has been postet from the nonnatives so far) non nonnative will us chatspeak because it is easier. No it will only make it harder because most of the abrations are expressions that are not really used that much unless you tend to hang around chat und messageboards that unfotunately do allow it.

Also, what is this nonsense about "This is a public area of the site, and the rules still apply"?? Keith, you need to either A. Get the rules back online somewhere, visible. B. Put this in this news post, or C. Explain this little disclaimer a bit better...... Because as far as I remember (and I may be wrong), there is no caveat in the rules about where they apply, other than maybe -which- forum to post in.... also, I thought the "no chat speak" rule was thrown out the window entirely.. so now you're saying it only 'doesn't apply' in certain areas? ....... Please clarify. Stat.

Lyk, omg, i think this rule might work for the better of for the worse.

I mean, I've never gotten a warning or anything for adding a joking "lol!" at the end of my post...

Or throwing one or two words of what is "technically" chat speak into it....

I'm not sure the rule change was necessary. I think it might just allow full-on chat speak.

BUT... I'm going to give the filters a chance to do their job. I only hope they work correctly and efficiently.

Wow, when I first read this I was like "WHAT!? You're getting RID of that rule!?" but then I read about the filters, (yeah, I was one of the people who were crying. D : ) I was ok. They sound like they'll solve the problem for the most part. : D

So were we not allowed to say lol?? ( before this?) cause that I never knew.. heck didn't know it was chat speak per say..

You know, I figure it like this.. those who chat speak will talk together more often, non chat speak will talk together.. for the most part.. other than that us non chat speakers just ignore the funky comment..

I'll put my trust in this. . .most of us seem so literate anyway. I'm sure if they made this rule on, say, another popular pet site which I won't mention, all Hades would break loose within an hour.

Thank you for being lenient to new users and merciful to old ones.

While they said it's allowed, they also said that the filter will remove/replace a lot of the chatspeak and more over time. Invision Free forums have a word filter on them so you can enter in certain words and have them replaced with a different one. It's a great feature, especially if you've ever ran your own forum. It saves a lot of time having to patrol everyone's posts for abuse. I think it's great that Subeta is installing a filter. It might be crazy at first but as they add more words to their list it'll get better.

Fair enough, but from my experience, most chatspeakers are young, emotional people who just want to fit in coughsamycoughs. Of course this doesn't apply to ALL chatspeakers.

So most of the things that have been postsd in chatspeak so far make absolutly no sense to me.

I am afraid that this will become common occurrence that most post in the forum will not be translateable.

Also...is there anybody above the age of 20-25 that HAS to use chatspeak and mourned that s/he wasn't able to do so so far.

Oh yaaay, I do rather enjoy macro-mocking and all that jazz. Way I see it is, the type who use chatspeak incessantly in that way you hate would most likely just post spam and get locked/warned/whatever. My guess is that the rule will work as intended - to allow chatspeak to be used in an amusing way.

P.S. To those who've commented with chatspeak responses: You're not that clever. ):

Not sure what the staff would say about the freezing thing, but seems to me that no, those who were frozen in the past for chat speak, should not be unfrozen. Until today no chatspeak was a rule, and those frozen for the breaking of that rule should stay frozen.

But I am not staff (Thank you for small favors!), so, it's just my opinion.
