Mysterious Melody Items: Update!

In the spirit of open communication, I want to let you know I was overly ambitious hoping to get the mysterious melody items out via the new way (hi ice fields) by today. I still have a few things to finish up for it, but since I'm still actively working on this I thought I'd take some user suggestions.

Right now we have one achievement regarding the Ice Fields (Polar Ice Field Navigator) and it's just for getting through to the end. I'm working on adding a few more achievements related to the fields, so comment here if you have suggestions for forum titles for prizes! They can be general ice-themed or sassy titles about surviving the snow etc.

If you have ideas for achievements, I'm open to them! They might not be doable, but I'm happy to hear. At least one new achievement will be revolving around finding items during your time in the field, like Snow Soup. These achievements will not be retroactive, unfortunately!

I think the reason people are saying MM was scrapped/not going to happen etc. is because this past Luminaire, it didn't happen, it's been scrapped!! We were told 3 different times that we'd have it, just at a later date. (First in Dec, then January, then February.) Now, due to not having MM done, the items are being released in the ice fields. Hence, MM being scrapped and not happening for this past Luminaire that was supposed to have taken place. I'm thinking others, myself included are meaning that, not future MM this coming December. I am very disappointed that MM isn't happening as it was/is an integral part of Luminaire. Luminaire for the first time in the 12 years I've been here fell flat. No MM, no Forum Boxes, and now to add insult to injury, the items are being released in the ice fields, which as many people have pointed out, they can't get past the first or second choices as far as directions to choose from. I honestly find the ice fields frustrating as heck.

fwiw when I did the Ice Fields & Crypts every day for a while I got everything I wanted & the achievements. I stopped doing them once I got them and will start again when there are new rewards; seems pretty simple & fine to me.

Oh man, I've done that and I hate it (clicking the item instead of the buy link and missing it). Another thing that bothers me about BHH is how it's competitive like that, someone can grab the prize from right in front of your face.

I agree with you, shopping sucks lol. Anyway, I just wanted to assure you it's not as hopeless as it might seem at first, especially since some of the chance games on here really are frustrating as heck. I don't think you should give up. But taking a break is understandable, especially from socializing...I drop off the face of the Earth all the time and usually just lurk. See you around during Survival! (I'll be lurking and biting lol)

I really don't, actually! I've seen a few things but only got one because I forget that you have to click the link and not the item. Me having more luck with BHH is that I have one tier of the achievement and I don't have the other two because I lose right away. Something about going to an empty shop isn't nearly as frustrating to me. That being said, if I had to chose MM or Ice Fields, I would take the Ice Fields, because shopping is even more stressful than getting angry with a game mechanic I don't like. If it wasn't so dragged out and we weren't made to wonder where our items were for two months, I wouldn't be so mad either.

I dunno, between this and my life, I've contemplated stepping back from Subeta, or just more mindless things and ignore the news/news posts/discord a bit more until Survival shows up.

Then I think you must be prioritizing the BHH, or you have some crazy weird luck. :) I'm on here every day, and every day I check the BHH several times and attempt the Ice Fields several times. Getting an item from the BHH is a MUCH rarer occurrence for me. I really do sympathize with you and I'm sorry you're feeling discouraged; RNG can be a huge pain in the butt and it's certainly not the most exciting game mechanic. But I think people are really overestimating the difficulty of the Ice Fields based on trying a couple times and giving up. You're probably not going to make it through on the first try, but if you keep at it, it's pretty much guaranteed eventually. And finding the other items besides the water bucket is pretty common, as evidenced by the fact that most of them are usually only worth like 25k, same as most other easily-obtainable game prizes.

I would rather this stuff just get released already so we can stop talking about it and get on with Survival, which in my opinion is a lot more fun and interesting than any revamp of MM could ever be.

Tbh, I'm feeling ambivalent toward MM and the items at this point. I'd much prefer staff to focus on making Survival go smoothly (imo the best holiday and no I am not taking criticisms).

Honestly, I never made it thought the ice field and gave up a long time ago. I just restarted doing it again. I didn't see a reason to really do the ice field. I think this makes it useful again to do and also makes people aware of the feature that isn't used much or given love. I also like they aren't retroactive as it makes us use the feature and maybe if we use it we can give the staff more feedback on it to make it better! If somethings not used much its not going to get better if needed.! now that we are going to need to use it to get items and/or achievements we can use that to suggest issues with it that might help it get better and create a new spin on it! I also have to say I Love the idea to include the old melody items in it somehow just like you did the with the other games for Halloween items.

Maybe as your walking thought the snow you stumble over something.. is it a rock. oh look its got a tag on it looks like melody dropped a present well going to deliver it. You pick it up and take it home to open it. Maybe an achievement for finding so many gifts. gift finder . user found melody's lost stash or user found melody's secret stash users fallen for melody or because of melody maybe in the future an idea for the staff could be to have a place to turn in the gifts and get something in return. maybe even an achievement for that..

sorry this is so long but a lot of ideas came well writing it.

I don't see why people are complaining so much when the items were going to be RNG-based anyway. The way I see it, it's not much different from quest rewards, especially when old holiday items are temporarily released through them. Or the carnival games giving out Morostide items.

"elitist" lol wut? Literally everyone has the same odds with RNG. I've been doing the Ice Fields every day for years and it's really not that bad. I've found all the items more times than I've cared to keep track of. I just got the polar water again the other day. Try not to get discouraged; I promise you it's better than BHH!

(You want to know what really is a practically impossible chance game? Finding the treasure in fishing. Or maybe getting all the way through Mind Reader. Or the achievements for perfect games of Reflection and Divine Discs. Ice Fields and Crypts are nowhere near that level of frustrating.)

I forgot the ice fields exist. And I also forgot the crypts existed until now. I quit doing these because the chances to get through are horrible and they stopped being fun/interesting for me. I do have 39 of those buckets minus a few I'm sure I used or sold, so I must have had luck at one time years ago lol I'll have to get back into doing the fields now.

Now if only the ice fields alert button was on the page when you lose instead of having to refresh the page.... at least I remembered to check that the url changed after setting the alert.

Yeah, bo excited it for this. I've tried the ice fields several times since Amber made the first hint and I haven't gotten past the second click. I'm usually not even able to get past the first. Guess I'll just buy them because I'm pretty sure I'm not getting any of the achievements.

Honestly, I'm pretty happy about the stuff going to the Ice Fields instead of MM. I actually trust RNG to eventually give me what I want more than I trust random anonymous people to reciprocate gifts fairly. I wasn't all that hyped about "revamped MM" and pressure to participate in something I've had bad experiences with for achievements. If you guys really want to send anonymous gifts, you can do that any time without an event surrounding it. There are gift exchange threads all year.

Also, I'm glad the achievements won't be retroactive. It would be boring to already have them all unlocked the instant they are released.

I'm excited about these changes to the Ice Fields. I stopped doing it after I got the bucket, so it's nice to have some encouragement, and even if the wait times are still long, I hope it will actually tell you how long it is instead of just saying "some time".

Like I've said, the change to MM isn't canceled or anything and will be ready for the next Luminaire. Snowtapult wasn't forgotten! I wanted to wait to see if we'd need to close it for the duration of Survival or not before editing the achievement. If we have to close it for the holiday, then I'll be decreasing the achievement a bit more to be honest. With leaving, I'm leaning towards the hex/strain issue still being a thing during Survival so snowballs will have to close for a bit. I don't have all that information yet, so I can't say for sure!

And yes, while it's easier to throw these items in a shop, we still want people to interact with a thing. That was the point of these going out via Mysterious Melody, to encourage interaction!

As far as the games broken, I honestly can't do anything about them. I am in no way advanced enough to fix games like that! Ice Fields, sure no problem. The testing I'm doing is mostly making sure the items do unlock in the parts I want it to, making sure the timing isn't insane, making sure the achievements work, etc. Nothing too complicated! Totally different from an actual game.

Yeah, the odds for the items right now aren't great. I'm going to be adjusting that and my plan for these items are some will be in the random pool, some will be introduced in other parts of Ice Fields, and yeah. Not just throwing them all to the same bit and hoping for the best! :)

Thanks for the update (and let's face it - we're all human, and stuff happens that means we can't always make the deadlines we'd hoped!)

I don't have any new ideas, but I'm loving all of the forum titles suggested here :D (and thanks for the confirmation that Mysterious Melody will reappear next Luminaire)

I just checked... I have around 50 of each of the items found in the Ice Fields - and that mostly since they were introduced (how many years?) and going there several times a day. Not much... It's going to take a good while to find everything plus new ones (and probably a certain amount of them)...

I really don't want to be rude. However, sometimes I feel really sad. There are a lot of things that are still broken. For example, "the bug game" is broken for more than one year or the "tubular tiles" that is broken for a few years and noone speaks about it (I am speaking about these examples because there are also achievements envolved). You weren't able to get out the MM, well.. and after more than 2 months we are still speaking about how/when a few items should come out? How about the snowtapult? You asked us about it and 90% of users says that should change in a poll and so far nothing happens. Maybe you are waiting for the end of the winter. D: I just feel something is wrong, it was easier to put the items in the quest shop or something like that and it was over. Just try to fix the MM problem for the next December! :/

I am sad that the revamped MM isn’t coming. I don’t care about the ice fields or items, I just wanted to exchange a few presents and send stickers to communicate. I was excited what was promised, being paired up with active users or NPCs instead of no-shows. Now we’re getting a randomized ice fields.. Ah, well, and of course the announced deadline wasn’t met. I read that you had a lot of issues and that sucks.. hopefully the revamped MM will be ready this year. Please don’t forget. 🙈

The ice fields are sort of similar to the crypts in the way that you have to choose directions to go and hope you make it to the end. You have a chance of finding some items on the way and if you make it to the end, you get the bucket of polar water which helps you make a glacier potion!

There's no real way to plan for my dev server not working. and I had to have multiple zoom calls this week to figure out just why it stopped working (and having to coordinate that between our other jobs lol lots of fun). I'd rather be able to test the last few things instead of hoping for the best editing code directly on GitHub and pushing to main site. I would've loved to have it out by today. Things happen. 🤷‍♀️ At least this way, we've gotten some really fun ideas from users that I didn't even think about achievement wise. :)

Maybe the wait times could be shortened so that it's not longer than an hour? They're too random at the moment so it would be good to have an actual set time like most other features do.

Also, someone mentioned skins, which gave me the idea of including the Ice skin as an achievement prize for those who missed it during the event it came from.

Oh, no ! Mysterious Melody will still be a thing it's just because of how these items were messing up collection counts and what not, we kind of have to release them in some way. Using the Ice Fields means we can get y'all to interact with a feature and it's a great time for me to add achievements etc.

Don’t worry, I’ll be adjusting some of the odds of finding things! The specific items that will be going out (all will be listed in the news post) were originally slated to be part of this revamp of Mysterious Melody this past Luminaire. We were close to releasing, which is why they were visible in the item directory/in collections but a lot of things happened that made the feature get pushed back and back until it was no longer a good idea to try to force it out. So, the revamp will happen this coming Luminaire, and these items specifically will be released via the Ice Fields. There will be more explaining this in the release post though!

Welp, I’m not getting a single Mysterious Melody item 😕 have literally never gotten a single thing from the ice fields and lose after one/two turns the entire time I’ve been on this site, and I’m very diligent about doing it whenever I’m awake and the cooldown is done. I was really excited for my first Mysterious Melody too 😪
