oh, I see... Thanks. Maybe what I read was like... to get a pet to T11 or to max in T12 a pet that was already in T6 or 7, not sure... When staff released those totems the cap was still T12. Still, it's something pretty easy for wealthy people, getting a battling pet.
For $200 USD, assuming you buy CSC in increments of $50 to get the 20% bonus, and that you sell at a rate of 11m/100 CSC, and buy tomes at a steady rate of 2.5m/tome, you could theoretically boost your pet to 11th Tier.
That's 1/4th of cap, and approximately 1/3 of the way to 13th Tier.
My main concern for the gellies (or any boss battle for that matter) is the ever sliding bar of damage required to win the prize. And by prize, I mean the top tier weapon.
The last gelly war, whenever that was, the damage required for a core was 5m. This time it was 15m, and next time it'll undoubtedly be higher, and so on. This isn't an issue for me, I have a tier 13 pet and more shrieks than I can attach, if it raises to 30m it just means it'll take me twice as long and/or more AP to win a core but it's still doable. This really is more a problem for the people struggling to catch up to pets at least on par with mine. The wars happening yearly or not, really doesn't solve this imo.
I know at some point the top ranking in each tier won a core (or several, can't recall) and on one hand that's great but being "top" is you hoping you did enough damage. I'd like to see something akin to sliding damage on tiers. Tier 13/20m, tier 12/17.5m, tier 11/15m all the way to tiers1-6/5m (along with the one per account stance). It'd give people with smaller pets a fighting chance (lol) and people with multiple pets the ability to give themselves a challenge if they so wished. (disclaimer: tiers and damage required are just an example, obviously staff would determine the actual numbers in the event of).
I wouldn't assume it'd work that way in every war/boss, but maybe it could maybe it couldn't (again, not up to users to call).
Anyways. Overall, above all, else can I just say how much I love being told point blank how much damage is expected of my pet in order to win the top weapon? Like, I can't say that enough. As a person with a job that takes me out of town 3-4 days a week with an unknown amount of time to battle, I loved knowing exactly what I need to do in order to get the weapon. I hope this is something that happens during any boss battle, so I can actually try and balance life and subeta to join in. Instead of just "well there's no way I can get thr prize, forget

IKR? 30m would be too much. I think 10m would be quite okay for this year, since last core went for 5m damage, but since staff introduced that new wespon, I pushed myself into that much damage because I know that in the next war it'll probably go for at least 25m+ damage so rip my pet's statistics x____x
well, battlers might be hard working and grinding people, but lately you can just but the totems and max your pet stats if you're rich (it takes a bit over 200 dollars, if I can remember it well). I mean, I really don't care about that possibility, but lately being a person with a battling pet isn't necessarily equal to hard work.

I'm glad people got their cores. I think the damage threshold was too high for mid-tier battlers and without those key weapon lends wouldn't have been able to reach their goal(s). I hope that staff considers re-releasing plot weapons and scrolls in some fashion to allow newer battlers a chance to obtain them. Maybe a few months or something as an indicator before an event? Because as it stands battling requires deep pockets if you want to do it all on your own.

English isn't my first language, so pardon me for any errors:
I'm not saying anything against the fact that the "best weapons" should take some effort etc. to be obtained, but: With my T11 battle pet (with low AP and mediocre weapons+scrolls) and RL obligations it took me nearly 4 days to hit the 15m goal. So the "I made the 15m with my T11 in a couple of hours so obviously the 15m was too low" and "it should have been at least 30m to be reasonable"... sorry, no chance in hell. And if they had made 30m the goal, I would have said: "Okay, forget it. Maybe next year I can hit that mark" and then next year it could have been 50m because "Oh no, there are far too much cores going out, it's too easy".... Back then, against Kiyo, I missed the Ancestral Unrest by the skin of my teeth (landed on my WL and will probably stay there until the end of the universe)... I must admit that I'm not a "true" battler. Maybe, if I sold my entire armory, I could afford the Ether. But I still fought (and died) against the Hydragellos every free minute that I could find until late in the night and I didn't beg for "better" weapons to make the whole ordeal "easier"... does that mean that I don't deserve a Core or that I'm not "ready" for the "good weapons" yet because it took me nearly the whole time the Hydragellos was out to get the 15m?
On the other hand: I'm grateful that the Hydragellos had infinite HP this time, so I could plan my time at subeta (and the battling) around my RL without having to worry about the "big boss" dying while I was asleep and didn't get the damage in that I had to.

Ive been on this site since 2008 BUT the first year I wasnt on much, due to the fact I was still on Neopets more than here. So in the 2 years where i was on this site more regularly i was able to get one. I got it by continuing to sit & click. Never did i think i would get one, up against the top battlers at the time. But I wanted one, so i pushed for it.
Did i continue to get a core every year since? lol.....No I never got another one till last year. I missed out in 2016 due to something that didnt allow me to get online for the last day days. I missed out in 2017 entirely due to taking a year long break from this site. Have i gotten better over the past years? Yes. It only took me 250 losses this time. Last year was 500. Back in 2011 Not a clue how many times i lost. Lol.....wish i could find out tho

If you'd had to manually stalk every forum thread looking for news you might have a point but they literally made a page listing this stuff so people could find it all really, really easily.

I'm glad you're working on making it more accessible to understand, because right now it's a giant wall of text and user generated guides that don't necessarily help if you don't already understand the system.
I would like to note though, that in a forum thread with 215+ pages, people going there aren't going to automatically know staff posted a request for opinions on something that affects a lot more than folks who post on that thread. They could have pinged the massively giant sitefeedback forum group to get more opinions and made it more accessible too.
Just because people don't read every news post doesn't mean that it's not still one of the better ways to reach most of the site - a post on page 215 of a thread without pinging anything site related doesn't really scream that you're asking for opinions of anyone except the folks who post on that thread. I mean, y'all are gonna do it however you want, I'm just trying to express that when making huge, site-wide affecting decisions (and this isn't restricted solely to battle things, I've had the exact same complaint in relation to other things like CW changes) that it's better to make it as accessible as possible or people are going to take the opinion that you don't care about the majority of users. Some people might post in news comments or on staff threads where they wouldn't post on general discussion ones. Especially if they're not routinely going to the admin page. How would people know the gelatin war might be coming and therefore staff is going to ask a question somewhere in the forums and so we must keep a vigilant eye on the admin posts?
Again, if site engagement is the goal, making things more accessible isn't a bad thing - communication most especially.
Good thing the battle community is helping me rewrite the battle guides to be effective and encouraging for new battle users! I suggest keeping an eye on the battle forums where battle related things are if you'd like to help pitch in. I'm doing a rough draft right now that I'll be posting for people to pick a part / throw out some suggestions / etc. My goal this year is to work on making battling better and hopefully increasing the battle community, starting with the guides. I've gotten some good ideas from some battle users and plan on grabbing ideas on the next siteupdate from people who might not frequent the battle forums. ;)
also just to clarify why we posted there for suggestions because it's literally where people go for battle things. Even if they don't post, people go there and look! It's suggested in various places that list battle things (like the guides!). No matter where we put a thing, we won't get 100% people seeing it. People don't even read every news post we post, we can't expect them to see every forum post of course! and I have brainstormed on this a lot because of our sitedupates being on the forums, so we make them staff posts. We've done news posts directing people to that feed + include it on the sidebar of the news, like if people miss admin posts it's not really on us at this point?
I'm a bit sad no one got to get a final hit with this system. The infinite hp thing felt a bit weird too, like we weren't battling a boss but more like a practice dummy. Having a solid number to hit was great though. I never minded putting in the effort to compete for a top prize, but this way is much more accessible to smaller battlers who want to give it their all. 15m was completely attainable for anyone who was willing and able to put the time in with a T9/10+ pet. I'm not sure if I like this better than the top X per tier, but overall I think both are good for more accessibility.
None of those weapons are necessary. Shrieks on the other hand, or other comparable scrolls, make the fight much easier

Battlers at the top are there because they have spent years and some over a decade refining their craft and collecting weapons. I think they deserve to be there. The battling system is not something that is meant be like the bathhouse pools where its just taking a dip. It takes time to earn and to upgrade and to understand game mechanics.
This does not mean gatekeeping. Battlers here are so helpful. I’ve had certain players smail me indepth guides when I reached out. If the game was easy where would the need for teamwork and community be?

Okay, going to start with the whole issue regarding the guide you made - which is a nice thing, but not exactly easily findable for folks who don't already frequent that forum.
Your guide makes these recommendations for weapons to do decent damage against Hydragellos: Maniacal Essence - a weapon that requires a core to make, that you could have only gotten had you been able to earn one previously (so, unless someone who is trying to earn their first core can borrow one, this weapon is already out). The Ether - cost: 400m sP Ornamented Hook Swords - cost: 450m sP Ancestral Unrest - Plot Prize for battling Kiyo awarded to the top 75 pets based on damage dealt back in 2015 (so anyone who didn't already have a top dealing pet 4 years ago is out on this guy) Tainted Keeper Skull Staff - Plot Prize for battling Twisted Jaxon Skelly awarded to the top 50 pets based on damage dealt back in 2014 (so, again, something you already had to have a top tier pet to achieve back then).
I hope the irony of responding to my criticism of the system as being a circle up at the top where in order to get top tier weapons you have to already have top tier weapons isn't lost here. Because that's the recommendation.
As for scrolls... Shriek of Despair - I am happy to have won 3 Shrieks - didn't actually use them here but I guess I could've. Had I not been strong enough to fight her or not been lucky enough to win some against her, they cost 73m each. Add that up to the 850m for the only two buyable weapons listed in the guide and we're edging closer to needing 1b to have half of a decent set. Psycho Smasher - well this one is fun. Folks who were able to defeat General Error with multiple pets way back when might have several of these guys lying around, but now you only get 1 and it takes 10 wins. The cost to buy one is.....0 because none are for sale. Strong Stomp - had to be able to defeat the Stomper 2 years ago (and if you weren't, like a lot of us, you have to wait until this year, provided you have time when you're busy trying to get in that 15m against Hydra). Or you can buy one for the low low price of 98.9m. So we're now definitely above 1b to have half of a decent set minus a good scroll. Gale Force - possibly the most obtainable for anyone who's been accruing extremely hard battle tokens, since it's 75 of those or roughly 44m sP. Cold Blast - makeable if you put in the work to get those wins against Mama Mush and Daemon, so probably more obtainable actually than Gale. Definitely not cheap if you didn't have one already/have the parts - costs 94.9m to buy one at the moment.
Mod Crystals - singed, critical strike are in the battle shop so they can be ignored as far as cost goes, they're fairly cheap. Eye of Royalty varies wildly so it really depends on what ones you're doing, some are nearly 100m so shrug we're already over 1 billion just to have part of the recommended set, what's a few hundred million more potentially?
So the guide is great - if you already have top tier pets and you're working with a second one. Because only 2 of the weapons and some of the scrolls are available.
The two staff guides you linked (the third wasn't made by staff, so tacking it on to my complaint that staff doesn't properly explain the system doesn't count) explain what things are, but don't very effectively explain a lot of how it works. Sure, they math out the number of icons/damage you potentially do, but they handwave things like "Speed: Speed plays a role in activating features like freezing and critical hits. " without further explanation on how any of that works.
You want people to engage with the community or not think it's gatekeeping folks from getting more involved? Stop pretending the system isn't already tweaked in your favor and acting like a few more cores going out is somehow going to hurt you forever and ever. The 200 cores that went out didn't flood the system or devalue the core or the Maniacal Essence, it's still just as unbuyable as it always was. 200+ cores going out this year wouldn't have hurt either, especially not that there's now a SECOND weapon to be made using a core (one that doubles as a wearable so if anyone takes it out to wear they've got to replace their mods sobs). So even more cores are going to be repurposed into weaponry and stay off the market, just like the weapons do.
As with any threshold, not everyone will be happy. While I understand that the grind can be frustrating I think all thresholds also need to be a fair level otherwise there is no incentive for battlers to keep training. I don’t think it is a matter of gatekeeping at all. I think its simply a threshold set by subjective opinion. It is what it is. No reasonable person would expect to get a core in the first year it doesn’t mean that there is gate keeping. The threshold simply moves and evolves with the game as more and more players become more experienced the figure often creases. Just like how subeta points and other currencies inflate
The battle community has probably been my favourite community and the reason why I stay on Subeta. It is interesting, I don’t always win but I get to learn about battling and weapons and try to beat my last score.
Battling is not about heavy hitters. The BAs have done a great job of adding complexity and fun weapons. It is about understanding weapons, scrolls, stats, AP and the challenger. If there was not a level of difficultly and battling we simply about clicking battle with heavy hitters it would be a boring game.
As for your pet though, I don't think it's fair to assume that just because someone has reached T10+, they can automatically get access to one of the best weapons on the site. We have to work hard for all of the top weapons and I don't think this one is any harder than the others, especially now that more are going out now than had been in the previous decade of wars combined. Like I said previously, there are other weapon choices out there, no one needs these ones to be a successful battler. They can earn them when they're ready.
That's fair - I really didn't have time to try against stomper because my time was allotted to Hydra. I didn't have time to go after anyone but that and finishing out the wizards for the concoction. I got a couple wins against them last time but ran out of time then to finish them, so I had to do that this year also. They also steal annoyingly and would've been good against them. I didn't buy til later hoping it would help more against Hydra.
When I started battling, in order to even hope for a core, I needed to battle for as long as possible for the duration of the time hydragellos was out. Idk how long those were any more. 12+ hours? I hardly got sleep during these to have a chance to be competitive. I ignored spending time with my family to do these fights.
The newer format lets me fight on my own time and gives me a certain goal so I know when I reach it, so I can dedicate my limited time towards other things. It is a bit tricky when setting the top prize goal though. Too high, people get frustrated, no prizes go out. Too low, too many prizes go out leading to the top prize having a lot less value and people would rather opt to buy the top prize than to try for it when another war does happen, kinda ruining wars in the future. The top prize should be something rewarding, something you can be proud of winning.
Battling, like anything, takes a bit of time to pick up. It's not impossible though. There are resources out there. Many guides on the forums, there's an official guide linked in the battle links that touches upon a few things, but really people should spend some time experimenting and having fun. Talk to your friends about it, make some new friends. Hell, my comments are always open. I may take a week to respond but I'll get to it eventually.
So much of the site has participation prizes, and I'd hate for battling to go that route. Is that gatekeeping? idk, I'd be a bad gatekeeper if I actively encouraged and helped people make it through the gate. The gate is already much smaller than it used to be.
Ether was a great weapon against Stomper...and most challengers that steal. I use that "waste of 400 mil sp" over weapons that literally cost billions of sp.

i understand reapers frustration of it being hard to get the as she says 'hard hitting' weapons as a lot of them are unobtainable or insane amounts of money but you also get cws that go for 10kcsc and that's just how it goes. value shows appreciation for the weapon or the wear. the best comes with a tag so I dont feel there is gatekeeping or elitism.

I've had this same criticism when staff asks only the CW creator forums about CWs - it's not fair to ask a tiny subset about something that affects all the players, regardless of what you think about how they "best know" - if site engagement is the goal and getting more players more active all over the site and spending their time and money here....you really shouldn't be restricting questions that way. Not everyone who battles joins communities or goes there. Not everyone on the site checks the staff feeds. There's no reason at all to keep things so sequestered. It just makes people feel like staff only cares about small subsets of the community. There needs to be better methods to ask questions of the site as a whole and parse the replies.

I never once said every battler is gatekeeping. Never. I specifically cited things battlers have said that is gatekeeping and noted that it makes everyone look bad.
I do take issue with your argument that 5m was incredibly easy, because it was for you, but not for everyone. I was close to a decent tier back then and could not hit the 5m because of limitations on weapons and scrolls. 15m was incredibly easy for people with great sets, it took them 500 fights or less.
I have a decent set, I have decent stats, I am t12 - it still took me almost 1300 fights and I work full time and have obligations that mean I can't just "make sacrifices" to be here. I did actually have to sacrifice sleep to get this done. I have a friend whose pet is nearly t13 and has better stats than I do and has some fairly decent weapons but not as many heavy hitters and blockers as even I have....it took her double the amount of fights to hit the needed damage. There's something inherently broken in a system where you have to have very specific things in order to make this not an ordeal.
Also I shouldn't have to come ask to borrow weapons or get a detailed breakdown of how battling works and how to set up things....that shouldn't be something that requires me to go hunt up threads and/or hope I can get a reply to. And for people who aren't comfortable on the forums? Forget it. That is a staff issue though - there should be staff information/guides/explanations for how battling works, but there aren't
My t12 was doing approximately 1m damage every half hour once I finally sorted out the best arrangement of scrolls and weapons from what I had, sometimes every hour depending on if I was on a computer vs my phone (because hey, I work full-time). My average damage was 11.7k per round. If the site stayed stable I could get in there fights per minute, so theoretically, maybe 1m damage every 30. Which means only about 7.5-8 but that's if the site remains stable and I can remain on a computer for that much time. Maybe my pet should've been doing more average damage, but if so I didn't have the weapons/scrolls to accomplish that, and there's no easy way to sort out what those should have been (and I likely don't own them or the things necessary to get them anyhow).
I did discover The Ether is a giant waste of time though this year, so there's that. Biggest waste of 400m sP.

battle community is amazing and I've made genuine friends there- they are so patient and willing to help I'd say they are all in all one of the best communities in subeta. even when I was t4 I was welcomed with open arms and have had nothing but positive experiences with them all as a whole. I think what happened between two individuals was tone (and how it doesnt come across on the internet) and general online conduct.
let me reiterate that I only really parsed the first sentence of reapers OP (prolly shouldnt be posting at 4am). battle community is gorgeous and I have made friends in it. I was just agreeing that we should have 1 war a year, this one was my first.

The BAs asked in the battle forums, which makes the most sense, and made sure to admin the post so it showed up in the feed, which we have a lot of users check because hi useful, good information (or at least and I try to keep it that way). I think this is a step in the right direction because in the past we've kept this sort of thing in house. Instead, and opened it to the public for opinion and while yes, they ultimately had the final say, it's a heck a lot more than we've done before.

My suggestion was originally 25-30m for damage, which I amended to 20-25m after seeing the other suggestions, but that is still higher than the 15m that was chosen. I didn't pick those numbers to be a jerk to anyone, I just distinctly remembered that the 5m from 2017 was incredibly easy. The 15m was still fairly easy in my opinion; my T11 pet was doing 2m damage per 30 minutes, which comes out to just under 4 hours. But I think it's a fair number to use for future years. Had anyone come and asked for help on the BC though, I can guarantee it would not have taken a T10+ pet 15 or more hours to reach that much damage.
Staff asked for our opinions on the BC because we're the ones who most likely battled last time and know what damage amount would be good. Most of the site doesn't battle as often as we do. 15m will look like an impossible amount to the layperson, but for serious battlers it often only takes a matter of hours. I don't think staff were trying to be exclusive or anything, just asking the people who would know best for their opinion.

It was only when battlers started crawling out of the woodwork to say "it shouldn't be easy" in response to "I have a t12 and still can only max out at 10-12k damage and so I need 15 hours or more during weekdays when I also have to work and sleep and see my family" and to spout things like "you have to sacrifice if you want it, if you're not willing than too bad" even though the criticism was to staff and not y'all that people started to being up how that is an elitist and gatekeeping attitude to have.
I have decent stats, I have a t12 pet that's pretty evenly rising, I have fairly decent weapons and scrolls. I still am not going to get 50k damage or more a round without having better weapons. The better weapons? Prizes for plot bosses or for high tier challengers, most of whom have guides suggesting other plot prize/challenger prize weapons are necessary to beat them.

So have a number of other folks, but not everyone is like that, and some people got suuuuuper bent at criticism not even directed at them, which is what creates the idea that the BC wants to gatekeep access to battling. There are some great folks in the community, but there are also people who cop an attitude anytime someone has critique for how staff handles things, and those people tend to make the community as a whole look bad. Just the same as a few crappy apples in the CW community make that look bad. It's why I always and forever try to encourage staff being transparent and asking everyone when major changes are proposed instead of a tiny group of folks - otherwise it seems like only the opinions of a select few matter. It's discouraging to the site as a whole.
Thinking you need heavy hitters to be good at battling is a common misconception, but there are always other options available. Anyone can be a successful battler on any budget. I know this because I was on a tight budget for my first few years of battling, yet I was still able to be a top player against the Hydragellos in 2016 when only 30 cores went out. It's not about the weapons, it's about the battler. We're always happy to help anyone learn to be successful at any budget or skill level.

I don’t think there is anyone I have met in the battling community that has ever not wanted someone to do their best. Battling used to be all about the competition and competing with each other for fun. It’s lost that competitive PVP edge so now the only thing to look forward to is rewards for working hard. No one is trying to exclude others. The sentiment is to keep worthwhile rewards for people that love to battle. Why would someone spend millions of sP boosting their pet, training all year and battling for 10 hours if the grand prize is an item not even worth 1 mil.
Battle chat is typically filled with people that battle all the time and have the most experience with how long it takes to do damage, generate statistics each year for events, etc. Most of subeta that doesn’t battle would have no idea what an appropriate limit would be. It was ultimately battle admins that have the final say anyway. Some suggestions were for 30+ mil and they went with 15 mil because they know people have lives outside of subeta.
This was easy. Can we make it last longer than one hour next time ? /yawn
Honestly having enough ap to equip scrolls and having enough of those scrolls is probably more important thing for boss fights, not having the “god weapons”

There is quite a bit of gatekeeping by some people. Wanting to keep number super special low to "retain value on the best weapon in the game" and insisting that 200 cores that one time was too many because it devalues them (I'd love to see where 150 of those went up for sale because...uh....it didn't happen, though I'm sure someone sitting on a core from every single war must feel like there's too many).
Insisting that only people willing to sacrifice their lives to sit and grind all day (as many pointed out, quite a lot of us are adults that work and have families) and that if we're not willing to do that we don't deserve a core...that's pretty gatekeepy.
Saying people work hard to train their pets and deserve it is cool, but like...a lot of us have worked hard to get t11-13 pets. You also have to have access to the heavy hitters, but you can't get those without having other heavy hitters to do the appropriate damage etc during it bosses and such....which, you knowis a huge circle of "only folks who have these stand a chance, but to get these you need those, and to get those you needed these."
There was no devaluation of the core when 200 went out previously. People who cannot equip the weapon likely don't have the weapon (you still have to get the concoction). And umm..."Little Timmy with the low tier pet" (to quote one sarcastic battler who took offense to people rightly saying this wasn't the best solution) won't be able to utilize the weapon anyhow.
Also the sarcasm and snark that folks used against people who had criticisms for how this worked was pretty ridiculous. Why should anyone kowtow to not generalizing when folks were pretty sarcastic and snarky to them from the start?
I mean, the battle chat was the only place even asked about what the damage should be to get this. Why not poll the whole site if we're not specifically catering to a small fraction of folks who already have the top of everything. I worked hard as hell for my t12 pet, I'm still working to hit t13 and the caps, but that doesn't do me a hell of a lot of good when I still have to fight for 15+ hours because the weapons that do the most damage aren't available. Wanting to keep only a small percentage of folks having the best available options is gatekeeping. Even if some folks are happy to share and help, not everyone is. And those folks seem to get the most weight when it comes to opinions on upcoming events.
i had absolutely no way of achieving the 15m damage mark without the help i got from the battle community, which has been nothing but the most pleasant and nice to me since day one and trust me i'm one dumb battler. cx
even though i have a T11, i would never hit the goal with my current set (which i can say is a good one, weapon wise) but i got the best advice and was also lent weapons worth a damn lot, because they wanted me to get to my goal as much as i did. and i did it!

I like that there is an up-front, set damage amount for battlers to hit to get a core. To me, it's much more fair than the Top 25 getting one. That being said, the jump from 5 mil to 15 mil in damage was a little steep. Overall, I liked the event and I liked that I knew exactly what I had to hit to get the prize I wanted.
