He doesn't say much, but don't be fooled into thinking that means he doesn't feel much either. Mathis is a deeply caring soul to those that he has formed a relationship with. Someone like Mathis is the most dependable friend you could expect to have! Plus he puts up the BEST shelves. Your pet hipottu could sleep on them, they're so sturdy!

Mathis doesn't fight out of anger. He's more the kind of guy to break up a fight. The only thing likely to get him to lash out is being confronted with the one thing he spends his life trying to avoid. If you can find out what that is and unlock Mathis as a challenger, be gentle! He doesn't mean to hurt you. But he WILL hurt you.

Everyone should be aware that it DOES take MULTIPLE tries. I wasn't counting mine, but it definitely took quite a few. For many people, 10 seems to be the right amount.

I'm having some trouble, anyone got tips for me? It's just not seeming to trigger for whatever reason--

I've battled a couple different challengers (prodigy, maleria's familiar, wyrmgear) without using any weapons on my turn, while the pet doing the battling had either Zombie Kitten or Sir Skittleton equipped. I've done this about 5 times, and no result--what could I be doing wrong??

I've done everything and I'm ready to pull my hair out. I've changed my pet's minion several times. I've battled with no weapons. I've friended and done all of that stuff to no avail. What am I missing?

If a certain item is too expensive for you now

said on the battle chat thread that there's a small pool of death/graveyard/bone and such minions that will work. Try some of the other cheap minions that Quentin gives out that are sort of like that, or the Zombie Kitten and Sir Skittleton which are still cheap. You don't have to use the Fish Bones for it to work.

You don't need to go expensive

Sir Skittleton worked for me, and zombie kitten for others. Make sure to not select any weapons and give it a few tries.

that's weird that the kitten didn't work for you, i think that's what most of the people in the battle chat used o: the pool is apparently undead/graveyard-themed minions, so sir skittleton makes sense.

looks like found a third minion that works for sure. good timing too, since it looks like one of the other two confirmed ones is... suddenly expensive p:

This may help

After testing several of the answers below, I lost around 10 battles with the Zombie kitten attached to my pet but didn't unlock him. However after attaching Sir Skittleton instead I got him after one loss, not sure if it was the minion but maybe it has to do with skeletal minions? They may not have to be cat related.

What game do you get the Fish Bones minion from? Players are being vultures and have them priced excessively, and I refuse to pay the 1.4 million SP some people are asking for it.

You get the Mathis random event on the same page that tells you lost the battle. You do not have to visit Mathis' shop.

Attach the Fish Bones minion to your active pet, and when you go into battle, do not select any weapons. You're basically letting yourself get KO'd without doing anything. I recommend sacking a pet against Prodigy just to ensure it. Cause I just unlocked him now

Guys, all we know until now is: At least 1 user () has already unlocked (and defeated) Mathis and with the hints they gave about it (the ones I know of), we've gathered: -It has something to do with LOSING a battle. -It has nothing to do with the wardrobe/wearables/HA -"Mathis is a deeply caring soul to those that he has formed a relationship with. Well, several previous commenters () have mentioned that Mathis is dating Victoria, whom if I'm correct is a pilot in Ziara. Problem is... I have no idea how to find her (psst, a little tip here?) 😅 I'm relatively new here (been around less than a year) so I'm not familiar with a lot of lore either. But I think I have dug up a few things that have been explicitly mentioned on the site which I wouldn't need a ton of background information from the previous years!

It's a specific action to unlock each challenger, and it's different for all of them.

So not to look like an idiot but how do these work? I accidentally unlocked Esmerelda recently and I have a suspicion for Mathis but not sure what all things/actions count. Like I see people talking about active pets, wearing items, doing things and coming back. Is it specifically actions or DOING things or can it be as simple as having an item in your inventory?

Everyone: You might want to wander over read the last couple of pages of Battle Chat. There are a couple of hints there. I still haven't figured it out though, but am pretty sure it has to do with battling.

I feel like that's probably a joke re: the fact that the challenger was posted a day late because I'm pretty sure that's from LOTR ("A wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to," is the original iirc)
