I was away from Subeta for a bit while Legacy Names were being implemented. I really enjoyed having to get creative with choosing unique names and for my future pets will still be giving them names that are not in circulation at the time of naming. If a name has entered circulation for the first time I would love to see something akin to the Legacy title to mark the name's first use.
I think this would be awesome to be implemented, but I think staff mentioned when non-unique names were being discussed that this either wouldn’t be possible or they wouldn’t bring it to fruition.
You could always denote the unique name yourself if you wanted though! I thought about doing that myself 🤔
That's a good possibility as an alternative!
Having unique names is definitely something I miss, I understand the change but it was something I felt made Subeta really different and it was always a cool challenge to come up with a one-of-a-kind name and led to a lot of interesting names I haven't seen other places (like concepts and objects!).
Even if it was just a little icon, it would be nice to have a little marker that it was the first to have the name.
I like the idea of it being automatic, not user generated because then someone could have the audacity to start something with "Well, I had the first of that name," when in truth, they really did not.

One issue with this is that the pet name search just isn't working properly. So whether its something "official" or trying to do it "manually" it can't be done right now since there is no way to confirm that you actually have a "first time" unique name.
Secondly this was brought up when the legacy name thing was first introduced and turned down then. The only reason they made it a thing in the first place was to recompense people for the effort, time and energy already expended. If you put in effort on trying to make a unique name now you already know that effort won't be rewarded outside of your own desire for a unique name so there is nothing to make up.

It seemed like the name search was fixed? Like I said, I was not on Subeta for a while but I remember it being completely borked and I've been able to search and find names with no problems recently. The creation date for the pet should be able to identify its earliest use if you're looking at several with the same name.
I get that not everyone wants to play the game this way, but for those of us that do it would be a nice feature. All of my pets have legacy names (except one I just made), I worked very hard on picking unique names I liked because it was a fun thing. By contrast my sister also plays and some names were important to her whether she had to get creative with the spelling or add numbers, etc. I feel like having a little note/icon/etc. that a pet has a first-time name would hearken back to that and doesn't diminish if other people want to use the name too.
pet search is definitely not fixed - mildly fixed? Maybe you could say that. Searching for my own pet name for example:

As for my second point, you missed it entirely. I'm not saying users don't want it - not saying we want it either - wasn't talking about that part at all!
I'm saying staff don't want it, staff never wanted it and staff only did it for existing pet names right at that very moment in time in order to appease all the users who complained about the effort (and CSC) expended based on the system that existed prior to that point.

here to show support and agree, 100%. i was also on hiatus when the switch happened and at first i was absolutely in denial :(

As I mentioned, I wasn't really active during the time the change was implemented. I didn't see any staff or user response and it's just my opinion. That's up to staff ultimately if they don't want to implement it, but as a user it's just my feedback that in the future it's something I would like to see. Maybe that's a ways down the road if it were to be done since there are higher priority items. It's just a suggestion that can be taken or left, but there's at least some user interest.
I was not stating my opinion, I was giving facts about the state of the pet search system and facts about staff statements on the issue.
I was not arguing against your suggestion, I don't really care one way or the other about it. Just letting you know about stuff you missed - because you said you weren't here.

I didn’t even realize the search was messed up, I thought it was just finicky LMAO
That explains why only one option comes up for really common names. Maybe it would be worth it to document unique names and search them up when/if the search is fixed? Obviously it would depend on users being truthful but when I think when it comes to misspells or combination names, it’s less likely for someone to cause drama over it.
Hey, Bayn's sister here! I do completely agree that I wish there was an indicator that you have made a unique name. I know it'll sound kind of elitist but I do feel proud when I make a pet with a unique name, and I wish the site reflected it.

Same, I didn't create any pet since then because meh, what's even the point anymore.
If a new pet is basically just another random character page under your username, then I can just make a toyhouse profile for my characters or something like that, and ignore the cost of getting new pet slots since they are not unique anymore, which was what made then appealing to me at first.
I used to enjoy checking pet names I liked to see what the owners had made out of it, now? meh I liked having THE /pets/petname, now? meh
Not like being able to make one blank page under your username is a bad thing for those who don't care about it. But I care. And I feel like it was not necessary to get away with what I enjoyed on the site in order to make a new option for users different priorities.
Why not just create a new non legacy/non unique option without taking away the fun for those who liked it how it was? I don't get the decision behind it at all.

Support. Fully. And agree with what was said here!
I'd like this, especially for legacy names that have since cleared. There was a name I was watching to clear but then non-unique names happened, and the name technically "cleared" afterwards. It's such a minor detail, whether a pet has the legacy denotation or not, but I like the idea of being the person who owns the original. A part of me still prefers unique pet names, and the thrill that came with grabbing a name once it cleared.

Truth be told, I left (for a few years) after they made this change because I really valued the unique pet naming and it made me feel as if all of my hard work was wasted
I have returned recently out of boredom and have grown more accustomed to the legacy names. It is not as bad as I thought, but like you said it takes away the challenge I liked of finding that one way to spell a name so that you can own it. Or better yet, the joy of finding a name spelled perfectly that hadn’t been used yet or maybe was being cleared soon.
It was an aspect that I believe enhanced the game play of the site so I fully support a ‘first-to-have’ name type as a way to bring this back in some form to those of us that really enjoyed it.
I mean, the system seemed fine enough to me as it was. Names cleared on the regular, aside from shitty people who would log in literally right before their account would clear. It was nowhere near as bad as Neo's bs. But I also see the other side of the fence and it was because of those shitty people's actions that I don't mind the non-unique name system now. But I still like this suggestion a lot.

I'll start this off by saying I'm honestly indifferent - unique names were a source of immense frustration to me for a long time because I despise numbers in names unless it's for a character-concept reason, and I'm actually really glad I can now use whatever name I want without issue (within site rules/etc), but they also resulted in some of the more unique/interesting names I've had over the years. I've cleared a couple of my own legacy names after adjusting pet names, even.
What I'm curious about, is how this might work with people who change their pet names? Like, if I have the very first 'Bob' on site, and get the fancy little icon or whatever, what happens if I later change Bob's name and someone else creates a brand new 'Bob' after that? Or even directly after I create mine and before I change the name? Does the icon (or whatever) remain on my pet despite them no longer being the "first of their name"? Does it get passed down the line to the second-created 'Bob' who's now technically the first/oldest?
Which I think might have been the very issue (or one of them) that led to this being turned down the first time? Along with whatever other tracking issues there might have been? It's been a while and I don't remember so someone can correct me if I'm wrong XD;
I was on hiatus when this change was implemented, but I think it is lame that unique names were taken away. Especially since I lost a name due to barely missing a login and then 'legacy' names were introduced. Lame.
I support this suggestion.
