How to play Mystery Box

The Mystery Box is found in Arctic Frost. It gives Restockable items for sP, but there are five main differences between the Box and the normal shops:

Every day, the Box chooses a different shop to give items from These are any of the normal Restocking shops, and so the items it gives can be R1-R99. (The text on the Box page says that it can also offer R101 Retired items, but this has yet to be seen.)
The Box offers you an item, and you choose to accept or reject it (rather than you choosing from a selection of visible items)
The item you will get each time is unknown (though you can make a good guess from the information given)
The Box does not restock: there is always a full supply of everything that the shop of the day has (although higher-rarity items do turn up less frequently)
The Box's price for each item can vary (it is almost always higher than the Main Shop Price, but occasionally it'll be the same)

Strategy

There are essentially three options for how to handle the Box:

Buy everything for a few particular shops, then all the items are valuable but cheap enough that it is worth it to simply accept everything offered. Worst case scenario, you get fodder for throwing into the Fragmentizer, at cheaper than would cost. Examples: Spells Galore, Philosophers Store, Freyalise.
Day off For some shops then the items sold are not valuable enough, and/or are too expensive, for the Mystery Box to be profitable and worth your time. Go play something else instead today! Examples: All That Glitters, Rathskeller Inn.
Buy with care There are two main ways of doing this. First, you can buy all over X where X is a price point that you decide on (eg 10,000 sP); higher prices are more likely to give more valuable items. Or, you can watch the numbers. This can have the highest payoff, but requires a big investment of time and attention to detail, and requires calculators and/or spreadsheets.

My apologies to everyone who came here looking for a nice simple Mystery Box Guide ... no can do! But I promise it's not too hard to figure it out, or to find out.

The Mystery Box gives you the key information you need: which shop the items are coming from, and how much to pay. If you buy a few items and compare them (their hover info) with this, it should not be too complicated. It is a simple formula.

You may find that SubetaLodge helps you work it out. This particular link is for when the Mystery Box shop of the day is Philosopher's Store; you can select the other shops on the "Restock Location" dropdown list at the top right.

All That Glitters	247 items Wearables Off day; overpriced.		All That Glitters No idea how, but just about everything in the shop is much cheaper in usershops. Today is not a Mystery Box day for me!

Apocalyptic Apothecary	816 items Potions, elixirs, stat boosters. Mystery Box		Apocalyptic Apothecary 816 items, all for pet color/species and battling (one wearable). Low chance of finding something worth millions; high chance of finding something worth around 40-70k or <5k. Definitely a watch-the-numbers day if you're going to play. Atebus Shop	378 items Wears, foods, books, collectables, etc Box		Atebus Shop Quote by Chocolate I believe the MB stocks rarity 1-99. Of course, seeing anything 81+ is going to be rare, especially in big shops.</p> <p>I&;m going to do a general breakdown of my own for this shop... The Smithy was great because there was a low amount of items (relatively), so seeing the r99 Key Mold was an actual possibility. To put things into perspective, Sable Smithy stocks only 28 items r1-99. Atebus Shop, stocks 335 items r1-99. Atebus Shop has an assortment of really high value items... However, next to 327 other items? Yeah, it&;s going to be hard to find them. I believe Pun&;s assessment is likely to be a "don&;t buy" day, just given the size of the shop. (Pun&;s note -- depends how much time you have; there&;s some good stuff.) However, if you were going to spend some time at the MB, here are some tips. Abandon all hope looking for Guide to Constellations. But seriously. Its shop price (736sp) is among the lowest in the shop, which means, even with MB&;s "pricing", it&;ll still be mixed in to the other 95% of the shop. I&;m not going to even bother adding that to my key-prices list. You could click all day and never get it. However, the rest of the items listed, have a chance of "catching your attention" if they appear in the MB. The item priced the lowest is The Stars of the Sky (4405sp). So, with its higher MB listing, it&;ll probably pop out a bit more. (And the other items, even more so.) Bean Me Up	Box		Bean Me Up It's a huge shop, with 800+ items, so finding any one particular item is going to be not so much needle in haystack as needle in agricultural storage barn. Definitely a Buy All Over X day, depending on how much sP and time you have, and how dedicated you are to your Beanbag collection (or your Shop Till / Vault balance)! All of the items are really cheap, so you won&;t be spending terribly much.

If you&;re into Alchemy, then it&;s good to have a stock of supplies in your Vault.

If you&;re not, then you can still sell them for a (small) profit, or Fragmentize them.
(Note: R1-R65 items give one or two each, and R66-R85 items give two or three each, so it&;s still worth it.)
