Welcome to the kingdom of Empera!

A steampunk roleplay campaign I'll be running with my gaming group. I've been working on this project for quite some time, on and off. Take a look if you need inspiration or ideas for your own steampunk projects. I'm no expert at steampunk, but I love the concept of it! Feedback and ideas are always appreciated.

My project The kingdom of Empera.

Map of Empera Some characters of Empera

Empera is run by a mixed government, both monarchy and aristocracy. However, things aren't working out very well for the working class, seeing as they have bad working conditions, high taxpayments and unemployment is rising as the continent is becoming more and more populated. The people are starting to show their dismay, rising up against authorities.

The cities are booming with industralism and new technology - steam engines, antigravity matter, aether (conducting electricity), automatons; all kinds of inventions. They've even managed to implement souls into automatons.

Little is known of the outside world. It's as if something has isolated the human race to live on it's own continent. No one has survived travelling beyond the borders of the Great Barrier Reef surrounding the continent. Something's keeping them in - a force of magic. Legends from the old age speak of magic, mystical creatures and races, but not a trace of magic is left in Empera. Feeling as something is missing from their lives, the humans have to compensate with science.

Humans are the prominent race on Empera, with a few varieties: gnomes, half-orcs, half-elves and half-dwarfs. Oh, and there's also the Simulacrons, which are basically robots with souls.

Tips for world creation If you're interested in steampunk roleplaying, or making your own steampunk world, here are some tips: There are a few steampunk roleplays out there. We're using the roleplay system of Tephra with my own setting. The setting of Tephra seems really cool, but not quite what I wanted, so I will pick and choose whatever I like and implement it into my own world. There's also one called Über RPG which has a lot of good story material to pick from. There's even some Dungeons and Dragons 5e expansions that will allow you to play in a steampunk setting. Useful tips when making a map: Use a fantasy city/town/lake/mountain name generator (search it up on Google or use this generator) and pick whatever names you like! Saved me a lot of time. DriveThruRPG.com is a great place to find lists of medieval names, items and other world creation/roleplay material. There's even a book dedicated entirely to airships by Sam Witt, really cool!
My Steampunk campaign Here are some of the adventures I'm planning to run with my gaming group.

Main adventures: Prologue: The adventurers are searching for the mad scientist, Dodimus Dapper of Duke Street. He was last spotted in Mineville. He is wanted for stealing an aether sphere from the vault in Bredon.

The bank robbery in Mineville. If they ask around at the inn, they encounter a drunk pirate telling them Dodimus was seen fleeing to Cursehaven.

Bounty on the Dodimus Dapper of Duke Street. Encounter in Cursehaven. The bounty hunters. Dorg Grimshaw (half-orc, simple brute, hammer and rocket launcher – can shoot nets to capture) and Zebula August (human, sniper and gun, shoots tranquilizers), the bounty hunters. Dodimus has two huge robot warriors to fight for him. He also has a weapon shooting aether beams.

The adventurers are summoned to the town hall in Bredon to collect their bounty reward. Here they hear of the riots in Brightvale (newspaper and rumors).

Paddy Pantaloons, tinkerer in Bredon, needs help to find antigravity matter for her new automaton. The antigravity matter can be found around the Hover Isles. Watch out for airship raiders. She offers to pilot her airship, but needs help handling the airship pirates patrolling the area. Distraction, fight them.   The riots in Brightvale. Anya, the childhood friend of one of the adventurers. The rebels burnt the town hall down after the announcement of higher taxes. The rebel forces versus the police force and soldiers from Empera.

The missing sister. Anya tells the adventurers of her missing sister. When she lived with the Sanders, Amarya was sent away after a series of odd situations. Amarya had the ability to heal with her bare hands and could make animals do what she wanted. When the Sanders found out, they were afraid and sent her to someone who knew how to deal with people like her.

Donald Millbink-Sludge, the collector. He’s very interested in Simulacrons and the process where a soul is implemented into an automaton. He has tried to do it with his dog, who has become rather rabid and uncontrollable. He has a cat that can talk. He needs help to find a sane soul to implement into his automaton to make a Simulacron, and asks the adventurers to find someone at the local hospital – someone bright trapped in their own body. The adventurers need to convince the person and bring him to Donald.

The Sanders live in the upper-class area of Brightvale, heavily patrolled by guards to prevent rebels from entering. Mrs. Sanders will tell the adventurers if threatened. Amarya was sent to the Auri clan. She only knows that the Auri’s can handle people with abilities. The Auri clan resides in the Wrill mountains.

The Auri clan. A secret clan consisting of 7 families, each specialized in their field. They are interested in recruiting, but once recruited, you cannot leave to tell of their plans. Their plan is to invent an aircraft that can take them across the great barrier surrounding the continent – with any means necessary.

Side adventures:

Airship raid. If the adventurers fly with an airship. The Golden Bandit in Opolis (or another big city). A bandit has stolen the bell of the clock tower and is threatening to steal the whole clock. The Airship graveyard outside of Rustburn. They meet Theodore Wellington at an inn. He asks the adventurers to purge the menace from his lands. Mansion Mayhem. Atomatons gone rogue. Rumors and newspaper: Mesmer. Rumors in Empera. She’s gonna blow! In a town or city in the north. Scientist believe the volcano on Soot Island will erupt and asks the adventurers to drop in a chemical concoction that will simmer the volcano. There’s a laboratory under the volcano, something’s forcing the volcano to erupt. City’s poorest children preyed upon by unknown sadist. The newspaper tells of a boy who has been found, his eyes are missing. A reward is offered for information. Rumors of a ghost town, Eldermoor. A wanted man in Eldermoor. Zombies

I have quite a lot more information on the side quests. If interested, PM me.

More info about some adventures Anya Willowtree Anya is a character with quite a lot of background story to her. She makes up the main quest of my campaign, as the adventurers helps her with the rebellion or stops it. Anya's sister, Amarya, is missing; a new complicated quest line. If interested about Anya and Amarya, PM me.

Flavor text: As you're walking through the busy marketplace, you see a teen gnome standing on a tall pile of today’s papers, waving one of the magazines as he shouts: «Extra, extra! The southern district of the capitol is in quarantine. Read all about it in today's papers! Extra, extra! Soldiers are moving in to immobilize the rebel forces in Brightvale. Don't miss out on the latest news! Get your morning paper here! »

On the front page of the paper, dated Tuesday 16th of July, you read «Anarchy is spreading». You scurry through the pages: Taxes are being raised to pay for new and better railroads; the unemployment rate is raising; a plague is spreading in the slums of the southern district; riots in Brightvale.

Your eyes suddenly catch a familiar face in one of the photos depicting a group of demonstrators in the streets of Brightvale. Hence the blurriness of the photo, you recognize a childhood friend of yours, Anya Willowtree, standing in the crowd next to the demonstrators and signs reading “People are starving”, “Down with the monarchy” and “Power to the people”.

When you were younger, Anya lived on a neighboring farm with her parents. You often played together, even though she was two years older than you. You recall that her mother was expecting a child at the time. However, they had to move from the farm when a fatal disease spread amongst the cattle. You never got to visit them since.

You read the article:

Town hall in ruins after the riots in Brightvale More than 500 people demonstrated in the streets of Brightvale this Monday afternoon, 15th of July. The demonstration started after members of the council arrived to read out the King’s proclamation and many in the crowd expressed their disapproval. Tension boiled over into violence and a number of protesters broke through the police line and forcibly entered the town hall. Shortly after several violent clashes took place, with the town hall being stormed by the crowd and eventually set on fire. Order was eventually restored to the town by midnight 15h of July, but the fire brigade was unable to extinguish the fire and by the next morning the town hall was little more than ruins. Five officers were killed in the uproar and 42 are hospitalized. About 150 rioters were arrested, 23 casualties. Chief constable James Anderton are ordering his officers to meet any rioters with force. Soldiers will be deployed from the capitol in order to quench the situation and patrol the streets.

The Auri clan The Auri, a secluded clan of humans consisting of 7 families, has finally found a way to get away from Empera. By keeping a low profile and practicing alchemy in secrecy, members of the Auri have come up with a material they call “amarinth” which can empower aircrafts and help them past the raging storms outside the coast of Empera. Amarinth has the appearance of a blue electrical rock floating above ground. It helps vehicles to hover and stabilize above ground, and to power the engine with electricity in addition to steam power. Their bulletproof aircrafts are rendered nearly impossible to take down once in the air. A robust metal shields the aircraft and redirects electricity into the amarinth stone.

The Auri uses the amarinth stone to create light and warmth. They also use it to fuel artificial sunlight and to modify temperatures in order to grow crops inside. Touching a charged amarinth stone would hit you like a lightning bolt, in worst case electrocuting you. It can also be inserted into weapons like staffs and implemented into armors to protect against electricity and to electrify those who touch you. The members of the council are divided in whether or not they should bring more humans with them when they escape from Empera. Some of the members are skeptical towards bringing in others, deeming outsiders unworthy of the Auris power and thinking that outsiders might not be able to keep their secrets. Other members believe they should try to save sane and bright people with different skills and good genes, so that humanity can flourish again when they arrive at their new home.

As a compromise, the Auri kidnaps and tests qualified people and keep them locked up in the Auri mansion. They call the chosen ones “Regens”. The Regens live comfortably inside the mansion, but the Auris speak little of their plans to escape Empera. Those who show themselves unworthy of being a Regen after the tests are disposed of. No one can leave the Auri mansion except the seven council members and the recruiters. Recruiters are highly trusted members of the Auris, most often the siblings or children of council members. The seven council members represent one family each. The families are experts in each their own field: mechanics, science, piloting, farming, diplomacy and management, medical care, and combat. Each of the families take in Regens that fit their field to both teach and to learn more.

[i)I have quite a lot more on the Auri clan. If interested, PM me.[/i]

Grandson of Franz Anton Mesmer (Source) In those times at least according to newspapers there seemed to be lot of serial killers and other madmen loose. Maybe it was the twin-standard morals of the era, readily avaible drugs or something else...

Wealthy aristocracy is flocking to get new "improved" electrical and magnetic treatment from man claiming to be grandson of Franz Anton Mesmer, those who have received the treatment feel energized in whole new way. The Society of Honour, clinic established in original Mesmers name carries out the treatments. Player characters soon discover the dark side of Mesmers theory of "animal gravity" as they notice that there is rash of murders and other irrational behaviour commited by those who recently been to the clinic, like something would have mangled and distorted the very soul of the patients. During the course of the investigations they find out that grandson of mesmer is in fact the original Mesmer himself, thought to be dead since 1815, they find out that doctor Mesmer has sustained his life by transferring energy of his patients to himself, or "feeding on souls" like you more religious people would like to say. Quite recently he has find out process of reversing aging process and looks like only 20 years old young man, downside of his method is that those who he feeds on with his magnetic transfer machinery become insane and without consiense or any morals. He thinks that he is just setting them free of any artificial strains of civilized society. It is clear that deranged madman like this who defies natural world must be stopped.
