Hey, for the past while I've been trying to do the best I can to mimic Subeta's art style for custom pet overlays/profiles, but... it doesn't work out so well. <.< I was wondering if anyone knows of tutorials for Subeta-style pet/clothing art or have any tips to share. My biggest problem is that I keep finding myself at a loss for good-looking subeta-styled cel shading when it comes to fur and clothes.. I can't tell if my failures are out of lack of knowhow or lack of practice. Unfortunately since I haven't found the best image-hosting site yet, I don't have a sample of my cel shading to show, only a soft-shaded Overlay, which isn't as good an indicator ._.
Sorry if this is a time waster, I didn't know where else to ask about guides, I've looked all over the place but there are surprisingly few guides on Subeta-style art that I could dig up. ;~;
for an image hosting site i'd recommend imgur! it's probably the best one out there really
anyway i don't really have much experience drawing subeta-style (or cel-shading in general eh) but here is a collection of tutorials for hair and clothes~ can't find anything specifically for fur though, sorry ; D ;
good luck! o u o
Ah! There were Subeta tutorials I missed! Thank you ;~; I hope just eyeballing Subeta's art will give me more tips for the fur, just the million-detail art pieces are more difficult to pick hints out of. x.x I'm surprised I haven't seen a single tutorial for from-scratch pet overlays.
As for imgur, as much as I'd like to use it, I don't wanna break their ToS, which says not to use it as a content delivery network like for content for websites and avatars and stuff, so I don't wanna upset them. o n o
Thank you so much though ;u;
actually i just remembered there are a couple speedpaints by keshi who used to be a staff artist! this one is more of a hard cel-shaded style whereas this is softer~
ehhhh i think that only applies if you like, use imgur to host your own website's content? idk i upload literally all sorts of stuff to imgur and never had any issues o: otherwise there's always photobucket which is kinda rubbish but it gets the job done i guess haha
Thank you so so much for finding this _ It makes me want to get up and try drawing right now, even though it's 3 AM.. hopefully I can find time tomorrow to try out some of the methods it shows.. xP
As far as cell-shading goes... You're using a soft brush to shade, wheras subeta style is done with a hard brush. The shadows are also at least 25% darker than what you're using. It's layered like this:
1 - Base 2 - First shadow color 3 - Second shadow color 4 - Highlight
It's just done directionally, basic stuff. One of the biggest things missing in your drawing is a "direction" to the light, you have shadows all over but no real indication of where the light source is coming from. As far as fur goes, it's just done in "texture" of the lines. Along the divide between the base and shadow (light and shadow, if you will) the shadow shape is stippled into fur-shapes. A lot of subeta shading puts the 2nd shadow color directly on the line where the first shadow starts, adding more texture in the shadow. A lot of them also have the highlights bumping up very close to the shadow lines rather than where real highlights show up.
