Oh man! I can't believe nobody made an Undertale thread before now.
I'm doing a neutral run because this is my first time playing and I hecked up MAJORLY in the beginning portion because I didn't really understand how "mercy" worked and when I could/could not use it.

That's understandable c: I kinda got spoiled before I played the game, so I ended up doing pacifist on my first try. If I didn't I'd probably be in the same boat as you o: I'm letting my brother play the game right now so that I don't screw it up completely with a genocide run :P

Ahhh this game. I basically joined reddit just so I could have a constant stream of Undertale content. Someone's even remade the game in the Unity engine... omg I love this game and its fandom so much. I was also spoiled a bit before I played the game, but I stopped watching the stream of the game early because I knew I wanted to play it from those spoilers.

I got into the game last month after seeing art of it on Tumblr.

I wasn't spoiled too much, but that's kind of a bad thing because even though I liked the game's unique option of sparing encounters, I thought you had no choice but to fight in boss fights, and then eventually I just killed random encounters or ran away from them because I was tired of them constantly happening.
Toriel: I didn't mean to kill her, I thought that if I attacked her enough, the fight would end. It took me longer than it should have to realise that when you get a monster's HP to 0, they DIE, as opposed to stopping fighting you because you've weakened them. I should have gone back and tried to do things differently, but I wouldn't have known how without looking online, which might have spoiled the game. And even ifI had, Flowey would have said he'd known I did it.
Papyrus: Didn't mean to kill him either. Like before, I hadn't quite realised that when monsters die, they DIE. If I'd have just done something differently on my last turn, or let my health get low enough for a third time, I'd have gotten to be friends with him like I thought you did in the game anyway. I wasn't yet aware of how the game changes based on your decisions.
Undyne: She said she was going to kill me, so I felt threatened. Later I found that was only cause I killed the last boss. It took me ages, and when I finally killed her, there was a sad scene where she was trying not to die with sad music and I couldn't help but feel bad, even though I felt I had a good reason. And even if I didn't feel threatened, I wouldn't have been able to work out how to spare her without looking online anyway.
Mettaton: I didn't even know it was possible to kill him. I thought you could only do that by shooting him when you're yellow. Somehow I managed to get the ratings up, which ended the fight. I'm not the first to have thought that they were just for show.
Asgore: I felt bad about killing everyone else so I spared him when I got the chance. But then I found out his wife was Toriel and was worried about how he'd react to that, only for him to suddenly die. I was surprised, thinking "But I didn't kill him!!" Then Flowey showed up and closed the game. I didn't know if it was the end or not so I opened the game again to see. What happened next made me wish it was.
Flowey: He scared me so much that I killed him. That was a bad choice, cause if I hadn't, he'd have appeared at the end and told me to play again without killing anyone. Instead, I looked online and spoiled the Pacifist ending for myself. But I probably would have looked to find out how not to kill various monsters anyway.
I've played the game again since then and not killed anyone. I couldn't bring myself to after my first game.
Really, I love this game, and I don't even play games. I made an exception with this one because you can play it on the computer. And because I like the 2D pixel art style. And the music is sooo good as well, I just had to buy the soundtrack.

To be fair, I think the game is set up in a way that sort of assumes the player will do something similar to what you did. I also killed Toriel during my first playthrough... But because I played the first hour or so of the game in a single go (before I went browsing for fanart of the skelebros), I didn't realize it was even possible to reload immediately after the fight and spare her until it was far too late.
I only figured out how to spare Undyne on accident (I got scared and ran away as soon as it would let me, lmao) and it took me I think seven or so tries to get through Asgore.
I had read somewhere that once you get to Asgore's castle it's impossible to go back to the rest of the world, and I had saved with only one healing item in my inventory (I think it was a single hot dog). So I was under the impression that I wasn't able to go buy more healing items, and that I had basically doomed myself to losing to Asgore forever. I actually got pretty good at dodging his attacks before I even tried to see if it would let me go back to buy more heals. So you're definitely not alone in not quite doing everything the way you're 'supposed to' the first time through, hahaha
Absolutely agree about the soundtrack! Toby Fox has been one of my biggest musical inspirations for a couple years now. Undertale has one of those very rare OSTs that is so good there isn't a single track on it that I dislike.

when things are meta-scares and do things to your game saves and stuff ahhh. Even after that though I spared Flowey and I'm really glad I did, because that's how you get to the "true" pacifist route, but I totally don't blame people for killing him after all that, honestly. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.
Then again, I'm also the person who swears I'll do an "evil" run of a BioWare RPG, only to end up saving everyone at the end anyway...

On a less emotional note, holy cow do I love this game, Blooky(Napstablook) is my all over favorite for some reason. I just love that sad little ghost... <3 I'm actually going to be working on a body pillow sized Blooky plushie next week, that way I can lay down and feel like garbage after meals. ;w;
That is simultaneously the best and cutest idea I've ever heard of before. Blooky is one of the best characters in a game that's full to the brim of best characters
