I was kind of bummed my 16k snowballs didn't get me in the top 10% of participants, but I didn't think much of it and was about to move on.

But then I saw 's comment on the news post, and she brought up a really good point about the scoring:

Quote by Blanche
If Dolly has 2,828 members, then the top 10% are 282 people; if 282 people had thrown the 5,745,964 total snowballs Dolly had all by themselves, each would have had a score of around 20,376 snowballs. 38k?

Maybe I&;m missing something.

That's only team Dolly though, so it can't be right, right?

But then if you do the math with both teams:

1,940 + 2,828 = 4,768 total participants 4,107,382 + 5,745,964 = 9,853,346 snowballs thrown

If the top 10% (476 participants) threw all of those snowballs all by themselves, that would be an average of 20,700 snowballs. And that's assuming that the other 90% of participants didn't contribute anything.

Quote by Keith
The lowest score in the 10% of throwers was 38,332.

Something seems really off with these numbers.

Idk, I think the page said it would be the top 10% for each team... still, it works all the same, since the average score for both teams was still somewhat close (a difference of less than 100 snowballs).

I'd love to see some clarification on these maths, if only for the sake of curiosity!

Wow, yeah that does seem pretty off :x I'd like to know what kind of convoluted math was used to get the top 10%, even though I threw 1k snowballs and I'm not even close :P

Do we have a forum title "is an underachiever" yet?

Wow, 16k is impressive. You're right, it definitely is off. Maybe we can see some clarification!

Wow, now that I see this, it doesn't make any sense. If all the 476 of the 10% threw 38,332, that would be over 18m snowballs. And that's not even counting the rest of the participants, and the fact that 38,332 was the minimum to be at the top 10%

I'd like to see some clarification on this too.

I'm kinda curious about this as well. I had over 31k snowballs thrown and of course that isn't achievement worthy supposedly...

Someone else in the news post said it might have been just the top 1% that were awarded. That sound believable, especially since it could have easily been a typo.

We are the 99%

I already commented in the news post but I'm agreeing with yours and Blanche's maths. It would seem that only a maximum 5% of participating players were awarded this achievement.

I don't mind not getting the achievement if 10% of snowball throwers genuinely did throw more than me but it's disappointing if the maths has just been calculated wrongly.

I'd assumed it was 10% as in just the 476 participants who threw the most snowballs so it just meant that the 467th highest scoring participant happened to throw 38,332 snowballs. And given that it's likely some participants threw no or very few snowballs, I just assumed that wouldn't be entirely impossible with the total snowballs thrown (I didn't do any maths, clearly).

But now I'm just curious and confused too so some clarification would be great.

I've done the maths for you :) If 476 people threw 38332 snowballs each, this would come to 18246032. As this is 8 million more than thrown it would be impossible.

But, a typo on multiple occasions?

The top 10% of snowball throwers from either team will also receive a special achievement and title!

Yeah, I worked it out roundabout when I saw the post here, hence me saying I'd obviously done no maths and just misunderstood how it was meant to work. But a concrete number totally helps so thanks!

IT WAS A LIIIEEE

Haha. But yeah, if there was a typo on the rules, I'd expect it to have been fixed before, indeed.

DOWN WITH THE 1%! xD

- I meant like if they made a typo when they ran the script, and entered 1% instead of 10%. Then it would only have to be one typo that would throw everything off.

(Or maybe they used decimals, and entered 0.01 instead of 0.1)

Is that thing called "kittens lie" just with a weird accent ?

...Anyway, yeah you would think someone would notice that. And there's a thread in the Luminaire forum where people are saying they threw 80-90k snowballs? What the fuck, who does that? (And yeah, the bottom of the 10% should definitely be lower than 38k even if I can't actually do any math to figure it out on my own lmao)

[edit] Oooo see that makes more sense OTL

As I said in the news post 'The maths is all wrong for the 10%, but that's already been noted. Also the 316 an hour during the entire event thing realistically means that the people who were in that '10%' (it's no way actually 10%) were part of the people who used the first few hours of the event before the 5sec wait time to just hold down F5 and get in like 30-50k during those few hours.' (Which was why I felt there should've been a reset after that, but oh well too late for that now.)

I wonder how long it'll be before the realise they clearly didn't do 10%.

- I'm with you on this one. The math doesn't work out, even when accounting for both teams together. I'm a bit confused as to what happened here.

I was under the impression it would be calculate the 10% from the two teams separately, not together... but yeah, 38K is way too much for the bottom of the 10%....

I'm also curious how many snowballs the top throwers threw

The total number counts for each team only took into account people who threw 2+ snowballs by the end (otherwise the total scores were REALLY wonky).

The math was totally right, the 10% of participants were given prizes. (I actually even extended it a bit to 13% just because the bottom was really dense with people throwing about the same number of snowballs)
