As a fan of sci-fi, space, and Christopher Nolan, I'm SUPER pumped up to see Interstellar soon. 8D Who's with me? Have you seen it yet? (if you have, can you put spoilers in spoiler tags because I don't want it spoiled for me ohoho) Do you plan on seeing it? :3
because this movie is right up your alley, I think xD
I read a mostly non-spoilery article about it and while I'm realizing it may not be the be-all end-all space movie I was hoping for I still plan on seeing it (was SO pumped when I saw the trailer, my shiny eyes the elbow in my friend's side probably gave it away).
The space exploration component still looks TOTALLY WORTH IT OMG but I could kinda care less about the emo happening on the ground.
IT LOOKS SO PRETTY.
Yeah, I keep seeing mixed reviews. Some really love it. Some really hate it. Some say it was close to being a "masterpiece", and I don't care because I'll go decide based on what I see anyway haha. xD
I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey and Gravity and couldn't care less about either one (despite 2001 clearly being the better of the two), so my tastes are hardly the critic's tastes. xD
OMG YES TELL ME ABOUT IT Rewatched the trailers so many times. /addicted
I can't wait for the visuals. ;O; 3 hour epic. <3 So glad it's 3 hours. Can you imagine if it were under 2? Too fast. THE LONGER THE BETTER HAHA.
because it might be spoilery idk
Did you hear about Kip Thorne writing for the script? 8D
Also. Michael Caine. I can't wait to see him again and go ohoho it's you in yet another Nolan movie hai you make everything instantaneously betterrrrr.
Yes. I want to see this movie so bad. I'm with you though. Everyone is all up Gravity's ass, and I'm like, it was just ok. I don't see the huge fuss.
But this movie, just the visuals alone seem worth it.
I didn't hear about that writer writing it. I...don't actually know who that is, so is that a good thing? Or a bad thing? xD
I haven't bothered to see Gravity because the trailer alone made me motion sick and...okay, there was this old 80's movie called Space Camp and I figure I've seen enough about people stuck in dramatic circumstances in space to last me a while. Besides I don't care for Clooney (I know, I know, but he looks like one of those craft stocking/potato people and everyone says he's a great actor but mehhhh) and he's like the only other person in the movie.
But yeah, like , I'm going just for the visuals. I wanna see that ship flight. I wanna see what they see, I want to see the wonder and the oh crap and that gorgeous wormhole that they keep showing in all the stills. One thing I love about Nolan, he knows how to play with pretty visuals.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
Yeah, without being too spoilery, the review pretty much said "it's like two movies crashing into each other". There's the gorgeous space one and the not super great waaaaahhhh one about everyone left on earth. Let's just say I know which half of the movie I'm going to go see.
I figure if I adjust my expectations a lot lower I'll be happier. :3
I hated Sandra Bullock's character. I mean I got the story, the metaphors, etc., but I didn't care for it, because it seemed so infantile. ;s Can't believe it won so many Oscars. Of course, I can't see Interstellar winning as many as Gravity, because for some reason Nolan continuously gets snubbed. :s Sorry, mini rant. |D
I'm also looking forward to the science. Bring on the mind draining exposition. My mind is ready. ... I think. Haha. X)
He's a physicist, not a writer, so expect a lot of physics. ;O; eee can't wait to have things explained to me lol xD Cerebral movies are my thing. Totally.
lol watch Gravity to make fun of it, I'm sure you would find it annoying 1/2 in. It was a short movie and I was WAITING for it to end half way in. That's how bad it was.
I saw the Cinema Sins version of Gravity. I figure that's all the Gravity I need. It was also really funny because those videos are always entirely entertaining. xD
Ooooo, okay, that's helpful, I know who he is now. I like it when they movies at least try to take a stab at either actual physics or science fiction that sounds enough like real physics that it's interesting.
That's one reason I hate and still hate Star Trek: Into Darkness. You can't just erase physics because IT LOOKS COOL - in really really obvious ways, too - and not expect the audience to realize the writers think we're utter morons. Uggghhh actually don't get me started on that hideous movie I will go on for hours. Interstellar can not possibly be anywhere as bad as that dreck. It's unpossible. So really there's nowhere to go but up.
Can I also just say I really hope there are more movies like this coming down the pipeline? I really do think we need to get back into exploring manned missions out into space, both as a country and as a species. There's an article I read lately that talked about something called the "overview effect" which is, in essence, when astronauts get out into space and realize just how tiny we are and how incredibly petty all our little on-earth squabbles are.
I would LOVE for us as a species to be able to grasp a bit more of the concept that "we're all us, we're all in this together". I honestly think space is how we do that.
(Saw the prettiest moon sitting on the horizon as I went to work this morning. I stopped right there on the sidewalk because - probably with that article in my head - I realized that without that fragile atmosphere right up there, we'd be absolute toast. And past that, there's nothing but...nothing. We really don't know how lucky we've got it.)
/sorry sorry gets off soapbox
It's like, 90% Sandra Bullock.
But yes. It was so short, and I was just like, waiting for all the big cool shit that everyone was making a big deal about to happen, but really it all happened in the first 20 minutes. So basically I watched a movie about a person stranded in space. It wasn't even good enough to get me to start freaking out (because I am a giant space nerd and would go up there in 2 seconds flat, but being stranded and space death is totally a legit fear of mine lol). I didn't even really flip when the "big thing" at the beginning happened.
lol and that's probably all you need to see of Gravity. xD I haven't seen a Cinema Sins version of anything. Sounds pretty fun. c:
It's okay! I'm glad you mentioned the overview effect. Haven't heard of it before (well named like that, concept I've heard of before). ;O; I do feel like we should focus on "saving" our planet and our problems at the same time as exploring space, because I get the sense we've given up on us, on the planet as a whole. I mean when I hear about 6bil spent on midterm elections, I get HELLUVA lot angry over it. Money talks and it is talking in the wrong direction. :l
Ugh, that's awesome. I love staring into space. It's so calming and beautiful. <3 We really don't get how lucky we are. /nods :3
eeeee I saw it! You can read my vague spoiler-free review at the bottom if you want! n__n
AHAHAHA. That happened to me as well! I was literally waiting for something big to happen without realizing it had already occurred at the beginning. Oops? xD
I'd go up in space too. Except I get nauseous easily and my body probably would not be able to handle any of it which sucks because ugh bodily restraints when the mind is reaaaady. /cries
ANYWAY. I SAW INTERSTELLAR TODAY. 8D Can't stop thinking about it.
(wrote a lot about really nothing haha xD vague on purpose! if you wanna discuss something after you've seen it, comment me or reping me 8D)
actually vague and spoiler-free review/reactions in a spoiler because i hate walls of text
Gonna divide this into different sections for ease. xD
Visuals: I saw it in 2D and alas stupid emergency exit lights didn't go dim so it wasn't as engaging as 3D / IMAX / whatever else is better than 2D. :c But it was still beautiful. SO beautiful. Obviously space bits better than earth bits. I don't know if I would be able to handle 3D because 2D felt nauseating at some point. Some nice homages to 2001, long shots. Basically well worth the ticket admission alone even if you don't get anything out of anything else. Makes me wanna stick my head in a space book and not be bothered for hours and hours haha. xD Definitely can see this raising interest in astrophysics and space travel.
Music: It sounded reminiscent of Zimmer's Inception, but even better. Creepy, haunting, mesmerizing are ways of describing it. Only quibble with it is some bits got so loud I couldn't hear the dialogue (thank goodness for subtitles omg). Can't wait to listen to it again. Also felt like a homage to 2001 because it was orchestral.
Time: When it came to the end, I didn't think it would cut to black tbh. ;s Didn't feel like it was almost 3 hours save for my stomach making sounds because I didn't eat a lot prior. xD
Plot: I thought a lot more would be explained about the science, but it was still very easy to follow. Point A to Point B to Point C. A lot of subplots? Sure. But easy to follow imo. The actual questions emerged after the movie ended for me. There may or may not be plot holes. The most glaring one for me I just explained away myself. I wish it would have ended better. Won't say how it should have ended because you'll know then what the ending didn't have for me. Which felt surprising because I didn't have that with other Nolan movies. They end in a satisfying manner. u____u It also sucked to have predicted the events in the movie. :c Am I getting so clever because of all the mind-fuck movies I've been seeing or was it just predictable? Idk. /cries I didn't feel seriously shocked by anything here. Emotional? Sure. Just not shocked.
The Science: I feel like the science didn't fall apart. I don't remember much about physics, but it feels like the movie didn't commit any huge faux pas which insulted my intelligence.
The Emotions: They say it's emotional, but I felt like there were moments that were less emotional than they should have been. ;l And I was like uh really? You're not reacting to this? ...why? Collectively it was very sentimental and there were enough emotional bits to make me cry and to make me feel invested in the characters. If I can equate Interstellar to ONE space movie, I'd say Contact. Easily. They try to amp up the emotions at each turn.
The Dialogue: It wasn't particularly clever / witty as Nolan's other movies. What's more is I feel like there wasn't a whole lot of subtlety to it and there was even one line taken straight out of Inception which almost made me laugh out loud. :P But I guess that's fine because there were a lot of issues raised in the movie, so it didn't need to be subtle imo. :s
Overall Feeling: Interstellar raised a lot of questions and made me feel even if others are like this was so cheesy. A masterpiece? I'm afraid I wouldn't call it that because I'd change some things about it. But it definitely was good. Definitely worth seeing.
Contact? -dies- That is one of my favorite movies ever. I can't even begin to describe the emotions I felt when Ellie was able to go through the worm hole. Just, total-childlike-innocent-makes my heart ache awe at seeing the world like this for the first time. Like, I think I held my breath the entire last bit because it was just so damn beautiful and I was so damn jealous that it wasn't me lmao.
I'm going to try and see it Saturday. I hope I get that chest bursting awe again.
Matthew and co do a wonderful job in their respective roles, so I think you'll be able to feel all those emotions and awe. c: I agree, Contact's a fabulous movie. <3
I was like gimme moreeee space shotssss, gimme more movie. ;O; Idk how anyone can say it should be cut, because I didn't find anything worth cutting out.
You must tell me what you thought of it! 8D
Fuck a movie and plot, just show me space!! haha. I'll totally let you know.
And I'm with you on the space travel. It's not a long trip up, but it's a LOT of force, and my body would just nope the fuck out of there, even though it's like, my biggest dream.
For reals, I went to an observatory, and they had a telescope out on the lawn, so I waited in line not knowing what I'd be seeing, and when I got to the eyepiece, I totally started crying hahaha. It was Saturn, which is my favorite planet, and I was like emotions everywhere at seeing it with my naked eye. And it happened to be my birthday. /space nerd.
The graphics they made for the movie helped the physicist who was working with the team. He said he viewed the x (omitted because spoiler yes) in a different light. Took even more than ONE HUNDRED HOURS per frame when they made the x and the director was afraid the audience wouldn't get it but decided to keep it (thank goodness, imagine working on something so diligently and it getting scrapped at the end nooooo fml). ;O; Idk about you, but that's suuuuper impressive and tells how seriously the movie took itself when it came to the space shots. 8D I wish they showed more but I guess I can see why because if you put so much into a single frame, the movie can't be 3 hours of space. :c
D8 ikr what fails what sadness /cries
OMG THAT IS SO COOL! So lucky!! Congrats! I want to buy a telescope even though I suck at identifying anything. Idk how people say oh that's this constellation when it all looks the same to me. :c /apparently really stupid lol
Saw it. OH MY STARS. I don't even know where to begin. It was just amazeballs all over the place. The graphics. The story. The acting. Fucking TARS. I teared up like at least 4 times just watching the scenery.
I agree with the music. I was like, the fuck are they saying? That was the most irritating thing about it. And it definitely didn't feel like 3 hrs.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I was SO FUCKING EXCITED for him to go in the back hole, and I wasn't disappointed at all. When he reached the singularity, I was actually creeped out a little bit, because I didn't know where he was at first, and I just didn't like that it was completely SILENT. But it was really effective doing it that way, and once I found out he was her ghost, oh god. Emotions everywhere. By far my favorite part. Other than SATURN! That was the first tear up, because I am a giant nerd haha.
I think really, my only complaint was that it was a bit predictable. I knew exactly what was going to happen. But it still didn't disappoint in any way. Seeing it play out was worth it.
Definitely better than Gravity lol.
Right? I wear glasses, so I had to have one of those cleaning wipe things with me at all times because I was getting misty eyed a lot. ;O; So many feels! I wanted it to be even longer. /cries
SPOILER (click to toggle)
The ost comes out this week. I'm super excited about that because even though the music was overwhelming the dialogue, it was really nice. c: My favorite music bits were when he was driving away from his fam and his house and when the explosion happened (even though I predicted the explosion, it made me JUMP in my seat haha). I read in an interview that Nolan wanted the sound mixing like it was because the dialogue in some parts wasn't important - it was the emotions (like when Murph was talking to Professor Brand and what he was saying started to get muffled by the music).
Yeah, it was predictable. :c
omg my favorite part in the film was when he was in the tesseract / singularity thing and was screaming to Murph STAY and Murph later on figured on "you were my ghost" so beautifully acted and so touching. So much crying. T___T
The only thing that pissed me off was literally the ending, where they chose to end at Brand turning around to camp, because it seemed to end on a non-emotional level for me. I would have liked her to stare up at the sky to see Cooper land or something. Some level of acknowledgement that he had arrived. Instead it was like COOPER MEETS DAUGHTER (and her fam was totally unemotional when they saw him, no awe, no feels, I was like you have GOT to be kidding me?!) then BOOM CUT TO BRAND. The part about burying Edmunds was emotional but to have the movie ending on turning around.... dammit, it felt a bit cold. :s I also didn't like the complete nonreaction by that guy who spent 23 years waiting for them to come back. He's just like "I waited 23 years for you." Okay, at least give me a better spaced out look or give me emotions. Don't give me nothing. :c
But overall, I still love it. c: Definitely better than Gravity, I agree! I hope it gets at least some recognition. ;O
The graphics involved were just so epic.
Matthew McConaughey was great in it. I especially liked his delivery to Murph's teacher at the beginning. "She (his wife) ... was the calmer one."
SPOILER (click to toggle)
haha the explosion! My husband is a jumper, and I'm not. He nearly flew out of his seat, and it made me jump for the first time ever. I was like, calm the fuck down and the whole theater just was like, nervous laughter because they all jumped. I didn't expect the explosion. I thought the air lock would just depressurize and because the ship wasn't locked on, he'd get sucked out into space.
And yeah, the ending. I was like, it worked, right? That was the viable planet, right??!?! Because it was just a little bit unclear. But it was still fantastic and I'd go see it again.
Ha, I'm nuts. I went and saw it again. And I actually loved it even MORE the second time around, because I understood the plot, so I could just focus on all the feels. <3 It felt even shorter this time around. :c
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I almost jumped the second time around too. :P Haha. Go figure.
At the end of the movie, no one got up. They were all shocked and sat there and I'm like okay time to get up. First one out because I've already seen it and had time to digest it all haha. xD Yeah, it was the viable planet or else Brand would not have taken off her helmet and breathed in its air. She had time to bury Edmunds, because we see his grave. The only thing I don't get is how Cooper is meant to get to Brand in time if they said his planet was not near the black hole and therefore wouldn't have its time slowed down. (Or like if Mann was near the black hole, how did he have years to research on his planet when Miller didn't and Brand said she died "minutes ago"?) But if I could poke holes in everything, I'd be here for hours, so whatevs. I will just pretend it all makes sense because the experience was fantastic.
I think my new favorite moment is the interposition of earth and space scenes to Zimmer's soundtrack (when Cooper gets attacked by Mann and Murph is fighting with her brother and sets fire to his field). It was a beautiful contrast of fire v. ice. I was just floored.
watched it last night and thought it was kinda loopy.
In a good way I hope? xD
