Yesterday I did some battles and my phoenix quill did not fill up my lifes sometimes. I know at some opponents it does not work anyway - but it happened against opponents it usually ALWAYS worked.

Anyone with the same problem?

Your opponent is probably causing more damage than your PQuill can heal. If your opponent does 1800 damage, and your pet's max HP is 1200, your quill will only heal 1200 HP, but you'll still receive the 600 damage.

Sometimes, I think I've clicked the quill, only to discover the next turn that apparently my mouse hadn't responded and the quill ended up not being selected. Not sure if that has ever happened to you, but human error is always possible. xD
