This makes me very happy. I honestly didn't think it would happen until a federal ruling.

I was pleasantly surprised by this as well. I expected Utah to be one of the last states to legalize gay marriage. I'm actually super proud of Utah right now! haha

Utah, is honestly last state I would expect to have a judge overturning the ban on gay marriage there, but still, good to know that times they are a'changing.

Yay for equality!

I wish my state would reverse their ban on same sex marriage. We're so behind I feel ashamed.

I wish my state would allow gay marriage...but I'm from the conservative South...in the Bible Belt...We will most definitely be the last ones to change anything. =/

Wow. I can't believe it. I'm pleasantly surprised. Good job, Utah. I'm still never moving back there, but good job. Get with it, Wisconsin, you're slacking.

I am surprised and impressed. If only other states/countries would be as... progressive. Never thought I would be applying that word to Utah - go figure.

I hate to be the cynical one, but I think the conservative politicians in Utah let this pass so they could eventually make more of a case for legal polygamy.

Lilo Except that 1) Most of the politicians in Utah are part of the mainstream LDS church which doesn't currently practice polygamy and hasn't for like 150 years. So I don't see there being a major conspiracy for it to happen, 2) Because of a ruling last month, cohabitating in Utah for purposes of polygamy is already legal! You still can't have two marriage license, but you're free to call yourself married and live together with as many husbands or wives as you want, and 3) this ruling was laid down on a federal level, and currently the state of Utah is spending over $2 million trying to overrule it--which wouldn't be the case if conservative politicians wanted it

(Use @ and then the username to ping people) :)

"Mainstream LDS church" is not a phrase I think people outside of Utah are familiar with at all lol!

Utah is actually currently asking the Supreme Court to block same-sex marriage, so the Mormon church and conservative pols may get their say with their anti-homosexual views even if the radical outliers will never see legalized polygamy.

Thanks for the ping clarification, and yeah, we'll see, hopefully the supreme court will go the same way as it did with prop8 but without any technicalities so we can get some presidence going!

Utah is now asking the Supreme Court to block gay marriage. This topic did sound too good to be true sadly. There are more developments to come, so hopefully the Supreme Court will justify the rights of same-sex couples.
