so occasionally when I'm really bored, I'll surf the dictionary. today I came across one particular word:
"catamite - a boy or youth who is in a sexual relationship with a man."
I just kind of sat there like, what? There's actually a word for that? hahahaha I'm so amused.
what words have you discovered and consequently been amused by their existence?

lol yeah. dictionaries are full of surprises.
however catamite sounds like a disease D:
There's one in German... Backpfeifengesicht. A face that cries out for a fist in it. It's funny, before I knew that word existed I always found myself looking for a word of similar meaning in English. There really should be one.

that sounds... a lot like a disease.
perhaps that was also the intention? hmmm..!
i was rather surprised when i was introduced to the word "defenestration" but lol maybe that's just me.
WowXD Great wordXD I don't really look in the dictionary that often...
Bwahaha, good find! XD I don't really do that, but it sounds fun. :P I might try it someday.
Sounds like an STD
I remember in fourth or fifth grade, I came across 'gay' in the dictionary.
I was like, 'Wow, that really happens? O___O'
Of course, that was back when I was young and stupid XD
LMAO!! That would be hilarious....I'm imagining it as I type this in fact XD

My friend and I made up one.
One day we were talking about Boondock Saints, and then one of us twisted the word into Boondank by accident. So we figured that was a word for smelly. =)
We are a classy bunch. xD
i think i've atually heard the word catamite o___o i read weird things.
Wow, that's definitely an unusual word. I know I've read the dictionary a few times and discovered a few awkward words, but I can't recall them. xD
I do, whenever I sift through the lists from the Phrontistery. It's actually quite a way to entertain yourself educationally xD
plasmophagous Means "consuming plasma".
Odd. How many people in the world do that?
ampersand (haha) I just never figured it could have a name of its own. And also with the learning english thing, there are loads of words I first learned in english and then swedish :x like cuticle and moribund.
THEY CAN'T BREAK YOU IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SPINE
Once in the 7th grade (8th?), me and my friend Eric found the word "masticate" in a dictionary. We went around asking everyone "How often do you masticate?" Everyone thought we were pervs. Epic times.
''epic times''?!
wtf. ;~;
LMAO! We need this in english, plz.
I went through this phase as well. ROFL.
