testing: quest & npc changes

🔗 links

i know you're looking for these first, so here they are 😉:

right now the 🧙‍♂️ wizard is the only quest available for testing, and you can do 5 quests.

📆 npc quests today

npc quests are the quiet MVP of the site. they keep the economy alive—circulating items that need value adjustments and injecting sP to keep your wallet stocked.

over the years, we've barely changed how quests work. sure, we’ve tinkered with numbers and thrown in holiday currencies or shiny prizes here and there, but the fundamentals? untouched.

the last "big" update introduced quest points—an rng-based currency for the quest shop. it’s nice to save up for something cool, but let’s be real, bad rng streaks can suck the joy out of questing.

with this rewrite for the new codebase, we’re making big changes that focus on clarity, balance, and long-term sustainability. say goodbye to randomness and hello to structured rewards.

🆕 npc reputation

building on the npc upgrades from composting and melody, we’re introducing npc reputation—the new, improved system replacing quest points.

how it works:

  • every completed quest earns reputation, which levels up your standing with the npc.
e.g., start as apprentice seeker with the wizard and work your way up.
  • your current reputation and perks are visible on the npc’s details page: wizard details.
  • reputation unlocks exclusive perks and better shop items at higher levels.

why this matters:

instead of crossing your fingers for random buffs or prizes, you’ll have clear goals. for example, reaching level 2 with the 🧙‍♂️ wizard gets you a 1% sP bonus for his quests. these buffs stack as you progress.

in the future, expect bonuses like increased item rewards or chances for special prizes. plus, rep isn’t just for quests—it’ll integrate into other npc-driven features across kumos.

when testing ends:

  • quest points will be retired, but you’ll get to convert them to sP at a great rate.
  • all current quest shop items will migrate to tier 1 npc shops, available for sP.

🧘 ease of questing

streamlined questing means fewer page jumps:

  • return items directly from your vault, inventory, or user shop (cheapest auto-selected).
  • grab items from npc storefronts if they stock it.

future updates will include pulling from your own shop inventory. feedback welcome on adjusting the order of these options!

🆕 more quests, fewer quests

🔜 coming soon:

right now, only the wizard quests are active, capped at 5 quests per account. later, we’ll test a broader pool with more variety.

the change:

  • fewer quests per npc (only 3/day), but with more focused item requests and better prizes.
  • daily quest pools will rotate, giving more variety and flexibility.
  • gold accounts get 3 additional npc options per day (9 extra quests).

why? with more specific quests, rewards can scale better—no devaluing unique prizes. total sP output will remain balanced, but each quest will feel more worthwhile.

other quests

shinwa’s quests haven’t been updated yet but will align with the new system. she’d send you to current quest givers in your daily pool, and we’ll revisit her rewards. got ideas? just don’t say "only the good items" 😏.

feedback always welcome! 🚀

I just have a couple of questions. What will happen to the seasonal part of the quest shop? The Morty Cards, how will they work if at all with the new quests?

if we're doing fewer quests and thereby needing to purchase fewer items from shops (user or main), will restock frequency be reduced to match so that we aren't flooded with every single item? Or maybe we have to bring 5x itemA and 10x itemB?

Aren’t quest points one every 5 quests?

Edit: I really enjoyed not needing to jump around to different pages. I play completely on mobile and that is a huge improvement for me

I’m great with number of quests being reduced. Not needing to spend 30-45 mins a day on them is great news.

I do agree with above with these changes, number of items that restock may need to be adjusted. Fewer quests mean fewer items being purchased per day which may impact our economy in a big way. Fewer items will go out though, so idk how much that will offset things.

I haven’t pinged this in a long time so idk if any active members are in this group but

Test new quests. 5 extra wizard quests!

in the code as far as I can see (and I'll very happily admit there are functions being called everywhere that modifies things that I haven't chased down) it's a 1/17 chance one every quest to get a QP

I have always ran on the assumption it’s every 5 quests. I don’t pay that much attention so I could be totally wrong here

I did the 5 extra wizard quests. I love doing all the quests everyday and if you are going to cut down on them I will be sad :(

Looking forward to seeing how this develops!! One feedback I have based on the current UI: it would be nice to see an option to toggle the default place we get items from (shops, vault, user shops) - for example I'd prefer to always buy from user shops since I don't want to use items I'm saving in my vault for whatever reason ^ maybe this is already expected to be implemented but just my immediate thought after trying the new system :)

Quest points are every 5 quests, unless you do a Blue Building for the 5th one, and then you just don't get one.

I really like not having to run around trying to figure out if I have a quest item. I also like that it shows me how many I have in my vault. I'm weird and don't like to use the last of any item I have. Overall, other than the errors I was getting it was fun and much easier than quests are currently.

Huh, if the quest points are supposed to be RNG, something must be off. I get 1 every 5 quests consistently, I've noticed it multiple times. Just did 50 quests right now to check and every 5 got me a quest point without fail.

I think I like the new system idea! Really love how this streamlines quests and the idea of rotating item pools. I also really like the idea of non-RNG-based buffs! I'm not totally sure how I feel about the numbers involved yet - I'm all for a decreased amount since I do think the amount of quests we can do daily feels pretty high, but the proposed numbers seem almost too low to me? That might just be from being so used to the current numbers though, haha.

I'm also not stoked when I think about how we have beginner quests and Saggi quests, especially if the daily quest pool is going to be random. The idea that we'd need to spend virtually all of sP (or send it to a friend for safekeeping... or find a workaround...) to do quests for Sarah to raise our reputation enough to buy items from her shop isn't exactly appealing.

Edit: I somehow glossed over saying this but I really love the reputation idea! I think the idea is so cute, I like the idea of us sort of becoming friendlier with the NPCs in a sense as we work with them. Would it be possible for there to be dialogue differences at higher reputations? As funny as it is that Maleria continues to insult me the same way after I have done literally thousands of quests for her, the idea of them saying different things as we work for them more is really cool!

Edit 2: I know they're not typical quests and I'm sure it would be done separately if at all, but I'm also wondering if Battle Quests will be changed, or if those will stay the same? The idea of them having the reputation element as well is fun when I think about it with my hope that it would be a bit immersive - I seriously love the idea of actually being able to earn Reischen's respect after all these years lol.

yes i really do need more

I always thought it was supposed to be every 5 quests was a QP? I find it makes it very easy to make clear goals of what I need to complete for items I want. If that's about to change then that means I am going to have a hard time because I practically gutted my QP to partake in MM this year ...

I do like the idea of building up a better reward based on how well you've helped the NPC questing.

If less quests is on the books then I agree that either more items need asked for per quest or restocking and vending needs tweaked. Although if people want to do less quests they can always pick and choose what quests to do and not do. I personally don't do them all, I do what I have time for 🤷

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

Interesting. I like the idea of NPC rep and earning towards that!

  1. As others have said above - we definitely get 1 QP every 5th quest (except at the Blue Building). There is no RNG in that area (thank goodness! I need so many for books)
  2. Discount cards and buffs don't yet apply to NPC shop purchases - not a worry at the moment as this is in the early stages; just bringing it up!
  3. I hope we will have more than 3 or 5 quests per NPC, but am open to change. I usually do all my quests. Also a lot of rewards (e.g. wizard tokens, quest points, new year tokens, seasonal items e.g. Keel Hauliday or Morostide items) are tied directly to quest rewards so this is a little concerning.
  4. The quest is very low on the page (there is a lot of vertical padding) so I had to scroll to see/turn in items - this makes the process much less streamlined. I will eventually have to adblock NPC images or somehow alter the giant NPC heading if this isn't changed. :( I typically use a 15 inch laptop to quest, so it's not tiny.
  5. Absolutely love the ability to use items straight from the vault. Could it possibly show how many we have available, so I can stock up if need be (e.g. 1/12)? :)

I don't quest at all, tried the new Wizard and oh I loved that. No more page jumping is very good. Also happy about having to do just 9-18 quests total for the same or better rewards, instead of like what, more than 60? everyday. Very cool 👍🏼

This is fantastic - thank you for the update, Keith!

I just went to the new wizard quest page - and it said that I've already done the quests for today and to try again tomorrow. I thought the quests would reset each new Subeta day, not according to my timezone? Or are they now every 24 hours from last quest?

It's much simpler, I like the fewer clicks. And the reputation system seems really promising, and a great incentive for me, at least, to do quests more. My biggest critique right now is that it's hugely distracting for the reputation xp bar to be animated. That sliding white across the bar will get irritating fast, especially since it loops rather than sliding once and being done.

also, i tried to buy the items from the new quest shop and they didn't appear in my inventory even though the "purchases remaining" and my sp went down!
