Literally have to set the outfit to 'private', go back to all outfits, click the chosen outfit again and set it back to 'public', to get it to show up on the main feed.
Like sure, I get that some users are anal and secretive about a dressing up avatar function on a pet website, and require that nobody can see their items/layering- but is that REALLY the majority of users here?
Can the secretive weird people be the ones who have to do the clunky three step process for private avatars?

we like setting our avatars to private since we dont want to engage in the popularity contest, we make avatars for ourselves, if we wanted to get likes we would update on style file. for us it isnt abt bein anal or secretive, we just dont want to engage on the dress to impress part of subeta. we're already BEEN doing the clunky 3 step to avoid that stuff tbh. mb there should be a toggle to make all ha's private/unlisted/public to help others needs? a toggle of set all avs at unlisted or public, just smth to make folk happy without going thru banal steps.
we do understand your frustration tho! just we have it in reverse haha
Wtf, public HA's isn't a popularity contest? Is that how you lot who want to hide your avatar layers/items see it? Ngl, that's kinda sad.
Public HA's is not a competition. I build my HA's for me and only me too. The joy is in the building and the sharing and the getting inspired by others and building more, not in any sort of ego trip negativity.
There are so many wearable items on subeta and they layer in such fascinating ways. Public HA's is an appreciation of that and of everybodies creative skills utilising these items. I'm pro public HA's because I love seeing how people build their cool little guys, and I love seeing the way various items layer, and discovering new items.
It's sad to me that this is not how everybody views this. This assumption that sharing creativity is a negative trait is genuinely bothering me too.

I get it, there should be a toggle at least for those who want to have them all hidden. This does need addressed.

Users should be entitled to their privacy. If you wanna make all your stuff public that's great and all, but don't inflict your ideals on everybody else maybe?
Yeesh, the aggression in your post is unnecessary.

I agree with demon 100%!
More options is better. We have different kinds of users, and it's true that HAs are a popularity contest. Maybe not as much as they used to be a couple years ago, but the feeling is still there. I get demon's point and support them
Having a toggle to quickly set all saved avatars to public/private/unlisted would be very nice. I am not interested in sharing my outfits, or in being shamed for not wanting to share my outfits, tyvm. ✌️
(Slightly offtopic, but I personally would like privacy settings for pet profiles too. That could be nice. 🤔 But that's something for the suggestion forum.)
Toggle and mass toggle are available. Changing the status of a new HA to public is a matter of seconds, especially if you're already in the wardrobe.
Setting the default to private maintains the current system while introducing new ways that HAs can be seen and shared across the site. It also defaults to users getting to choose / consent to sharing their creativity publicly versus defaulting to sharing and having to remember to change it if that's not something they are comfortable with.
People have different experiences and meeting their perspectives and thoughts with judgement and aggression is not cool at all.
Mass toggle is sadly not available yet. :(
It's really hard to see (I had to zoom in while double-checking), but Keith did place a "Soon" emoji in front of that bullet point over in the Saved Avatar Improvements thread.
i also do not want all of my outfits to be automatically public and i love making avatars (and have been posting to style file forever) but the way i use outfits is that i save the beginnings of outfits and not complete ones all the time, or just combinations of items together that i like and want to save for future ref. if they were automatically public any time you saved them that would be so annoying lmfao. and personally, if i figure out really cool item combinations & layering on my own i don't love it when people straight up copy that. but i am from a time on subeta where human avatars WERE very much a popularity contest thing. sure, that's definitely changed somewhat over the years, but users who have been online for longer than you remember a time when it was that way and can understandably not want to feel that way again.
i agree that this should be a toggle-able option for those who do want to share every outfit and from the wording it seems like it was planned to be a toggle (either from the start and it was missed or it was planned and in the works)
and the hostility from op when someone disagreed..(and in the op itself)? it's really not that serious
Toggle options are always nice even if I won't use them.
However, I do like having them be private by default. I've made OCs with the wardrobe and not everyone needs to see them. I don't even wear them publicly, they're just for me and my friends. I also have WIPs and HAs that are for events so they're all pretty much the same but have hidden items to block or encourage site events. No need to flood the public with those.
Honestly, more sites should put privacy first. It's kind of refreshing.
Since when are outfits private by default? Every time I create an outfit, I always have to go and change it to private.
i think users should be able to choose their default setting, as well as being able to toggle individual AND many/all avatars at once.
especially since the new outfits system means your HA is showing up on item pages and other places users can just stumble upon them (as opposed to the way it works now where someone has to go out of their way to see your list of saved HAs), a publicly-visible HA sort of suggests "this is finished and ready to be viewed by everyone."
but i save A TON of work-in-progress HAs, or just testing different item combinations, or maybe something to enter in a contest that doesn't necessarily reflect my own tastes. so i don't think i'd want those HAs showing up on those pages and clogging up the item usage statistics.
i also think we should be able to toggle whether or not we want people to be able to react to our HAs (either across the board or on a case-by-case basis). like, i'm not trying to HIDE my HAs from anyone, i still want them to be able to view them—but that doesn't automatically mean i want other people's input, even if it's positive. if i want feedback or validation from others, i will post the HA in the forums or on style-file. otherwise, my saved outfits are just an archive—MY archive, for ME—so i don't necessarily want people viewing it as something that invites their two cents.
I think you're just not completely aware of how some of us have been using the outfits feature. We're monsters. Sometimes I go in a different direction and want to save different item combos. I have 3-9 versions of the same outfit saved over and over and over. I could make all those public and just let people deal with my outfit spam or I could save you all from this and just make the final version public. xD
Agree that the system needs smoothed out, let us chose if we have our outfits set to private or public and make it easier to switch between the two. It's too clunky for EVERYONE right now.
I have no idea how to do any of the 3 step process. But I also sit there and don't display HAs on the forum because it's always caused more lag for me on my end.

i guess i’m in the minority that preferred them public by default, because i want to be able to find wearables i see other people wearing if i like them! i also will look through the public outfits from time to time because i like seeing other people’s creations. i started in 2022 so i have never seen the popularity contests being mentioned. also, as far as i know, avatar likes are only even displayed on your dashboard and don’t give you a notification. i will go out of my way to find the avatar like button if i like someone’s outfit, because to me that’s no different than saying “i like your outfit!” irl. i guess i’m just not seeing this from y’all’s perspective.
also, can y’all tell me what style file is?
I like all of the things about sharing outfits that you mentioned! I just don't think anyone benefits from seeing this:

I'm making at least 4 private outfits for every one that I share, which is why I'd like private as default. I only need to share one of these. I think the solution to this is to let users pick which one is our default, because there's no wrong way to be using outfits. Also, to make it easier to switch from private to public and vice versa so nobody is inconvenienced.
Style File is a rad, user-run site that's existed for at least 15 years! It has been a way for people to share their outfits and store their little archive of outfits. Subeta didn't always have an easy outfit storage and it hasn't had an easy way to browse outfits before keith added this wardrobe share feature. Here is my style-file, the first avatar I uploaded there was in 2010! xD It has a looooot of history on it. Subeta has existed 20 years without having a good way to browse people's styles... so users took it into their own hands and made Style File.
I don't think there is nearly as bad as a popularity contest, as there has felt in the past. I think some of those comments come from Keith on another thread saying he wanted a thumbs down option for avatars, which people were against. It also comes from sites like Style-File being extremely popular when this site had a much more clique-y userbase, and still has features like ranking the week's and month's top avatars submitted there.
But imo there's two factors to avatars being public: the act of browsing and the act of sharing, and I think a lot of people simply don't feel like putting their avatars out there even if they like browsing. Again, I don't think anyone's in the wrong here for how they make and store avatars, I think a system that functions properly and efficiently serves all of us. The challenge for subeta has always been "make something that works well" so we'll just cross our fingers and see.
