I understand that users can charge whatever they want in their shops, but when one person consistently puts their prices at around 1/10 of everyone else's, that makes it difficult for other users to sell stuff and make any sP. I don't know if there is any way to regulate this, but it's frustrating to have a bunch of items that all of a sudden drop in price, for example from 280,000 to 40,000. Seen it way too many times. :(
That's the way the economy works - it might be that the item is suddenly in demand, it might be that they're willing to take the 'hit' on pricing items lower. I'm sure it's annoying when it happens - but they won't be doing it on purpose to annoy or upset people.
You're perfectly within your rights to undercut them by 1sp if you wanted. shrug
I don't think this should be regulated. It sucks for personal profits, but if the item has good enough of a demand, someone will buy the undercutter's item and you will still be able to sell it at a higher price, and if not, then it's what said -- the price will then reflect the lower demand.
Personally, I find when people mass buy items to increase the price on the shop search more annoying.
You can still make a profit from questing and restocking. As far as I know, this isn't happening to a good chunk of items.
Oh, not this again.

Often times people price things lower for good reason - I see this happening a lot with holiday store items especially. They may be priced at 500k, but users who have been around a while know they can spend less by purchasing the item from a holiday store. So the item just sits around. Usually when people lower the price to 50k or below, it's so the item gets requested for one of Quentin's quests, so it moves faster.
I'm about to put a Twilight Lifelike Tigrean Doll - currently valued at 679,995 sP on the Shop Search - in my shop for 25,000 sP. No, I'm not sorry about it. Yes, I'll explain.
The oldest sets of lifelike dolls, for the most part, have hovered pretty consistently in the 23,000-25,000 sP range for some time now. All the Tigrean dolls are in that range, or were: I distinctly remember buying some different colors of each, and they were all around that price - including Twilight.
So when I got one from Ruffles just a few minutes ago, I was surprised to find the price was way higher than that on the shop search. Subetalodge has a nifty little feature that tracks the price of an item over time, so I checked it, and sure enough: it jumped last month. Looks a bit...artificially done to me. And honestly? THAT annoys me way more.
So, sorry. Feel however y'all want about it, but the doll's going in my shop for the old price.
Not saying OP's problem isn't real. Undercutting absolutely is a thing people do. I'm just saying, there could be also be a good reason someone prices things lower than shop search.
Eh, I sold an item that cost 30m (from the Antique shop) for 750k the other day because someone undercut or made a mistake and I must've autopriced to the same price. Honestly, I'm surprised it sat in my shop for so long as I haven't had a GA in months.
I'm not overly sour, though - I've bought mispriced items for a steal before, and I will again. /shrug
I do agree with the users mentioning holiday shop items here - many/most holiday shop items are horrendously overpriced and I feel bad for newbies buying them at those prices. Undercut those!
If there's something in your shop someone has undercut significantly - either put it in your vault and wait for the price to rise, or accept the lower profit margin. That's what I do. c:
I undercut just to get rid of stuff quickly and it usually does go fast so it isn't sitting too too long to cause an issue for autopricers.

I can see where OP is coming from as I see it too, and it's not in regards to holiday shop items. I do agree those items are usually way overpriced in shops compared to the cost of the currency used to buy them. but as someone who just returned after being away from the site for 9 years, restocking is what I do with most of my day while on Subeta and I've seen lots of items drop dramatically or fluctuate a lot. I'm not sure if there's increased restockers all competing to sell the same items, or if people don't realize they don't need to drastically drop a price to get it to sell... I personally when doing quests don't really pay attention to price or shop when purchasing, just click the top shop. so even if it's only 1 Sp difference, they'll get my business. but that's just my observations and two cents.
The way I see it is that's the risk you take with a convenient, 'lazy' option of autopricing. If it's a concern of yours, check your high price items when using autoprice.
The only real issue with undercutters is when they do it with hundreds, sometimes thousands of an item. so the price is screwed forever. then god forbid everyone and their grandma autoprices to it. (so what the hell do they have to gain by undercutting? pissing me off?) but it's okay for them to dictate the price of an item indefinitely because they're doing most of the userbase a favor. so many people just get on here and do their quests and don't get any more involved in the "economy" than that so undercutters literally have only a positive impact on them. there is no point discussing this topic.
to be clear, i only get annoyed when people do this with RESTOCKABLE items. (and obviously not ones someone has tried to jack the price up to like 300,000 sp) i don't care if someone undercuts a holiday item or whatever. those items don't exist to make profit. but undercutting the restockable items with hundreds in stock... 🙃
I've only ever undercut by 5k or so. If I catch something I know is expensive and shouldn't be priced low, I buy it and talk to the shop owner about giving it back, regardless if I get the sP back or not. Only thing I can say is keep an eye on things you know should be a specific price and see if it's changed drastically or not. Sadly, pricing things seriously low isn't unusual on the website and I know typos can happen, I've done that before and caused others who autopriced before I caught it to do the same, so I do the above to fix the mistake I caused.
seconding that the only thing thats a little annoying about the current economy is when an item is stocked with 1k+ items , essentially locking something at that price for the foreseeable future, but hey, thats how stuff goes, and tbh props to them for even having that amount of items.
would rather have stuff priced at 5k than 500k
Also, forgot to say, what I recommend doing is having two shops - one for the lower priced items and one for the higher priced items, autopricing and then deciding on a cut-off price when searching price < (less than) in your shop. For my restocking shop, this is how I remove things which have suddenly become not profitable to me (5k) and place them back in my vault (to either be sold or be used during questing instead of buying from others). It'd be very rare for someone to buy your item between auto-pricing and checking the shop for items priced below a cut-off point (assuming you check right after you auto-price). :3 Obviously this isn't going to help with all the underpricing, but it can ensure you're not selling them for really, really low.
i'm sure it's annoying for anyone who would like those prices to go up but imo those shops are great for grinding recycle points. if not for the hoarders, recycle beast items would all get snapped up at the turn of midnight and no one else would have a chance to get them for a reasonable price.

Wasn't there some kind of plan for changing how the recycle beast asks for items specifically to avoid this? I haven't been saving recycle points for ages but I would have sworn there was something.
But I do agree as someone who buys up items for humming power crystals, even when it's slightly disadvantageous for me sP-wise. I will pay for the convenience.
the change just involved rolling over the requested items at like 7 PM and midnight instead of only midnight. i don't think it really accomplished anything though...
That makes sense as it seemed the same to me, thank you! xD
yeah lol it's all "we don't want to encourage hoarding and mass-buying!!" meanwhile multiple site features explicitly require hoarding and mass-buying soooo... 🙄

ngl totally forgot recycle beast was a thing, lol
