I'm trying to stick 20 stickers on one of my friends right now and the list of friends is sorted by timeline. That means I have to sort through the whole list every time for her name, and I'm a little bit exasperated, because I have a lot of Subeta friends, and I can never remember when I added any of them except the person who referred me, and the most recent person I added. This would go a lot faster if the list were alphabetised.
I also find the timeline sort in the list of CW shops I follow really unhelpful. I follow a lot of shops because, for a long time, you didn't see new items on the CW feed unless you followed the shop, and it's so hard to find one in the list I just use the search function to find shops that I actually already follow.
I have to ask if there is any situation in which anyone actually finds timeline sort useful. For me, it's only really tolerable if a list of things is very short., and it really is almost never useful.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I find it helpful in inventory - I often switch between the user price and timeline modes depending on my needs. But there you have a choice. My only gripe with that is that it doesn't correspond to quick stock (which is alphabetical only).
However, I agree that the other places you mentioned would make more sense alphabetically. Friends especially frustrates me. The only time having them timeline-ordered helps is when it is a new friend who I am transferring a pet to. But often I am transferring a pet to someone I am already friends with, and I have to hunt for them in a long list, which is not fun.
I also prefer timeline sort for the Inventory, but I agree I'd love for Friends-related things to be alphabetical.
I love timeline sort in my inventory. I use it almost exclusively.
However, the friends list sorted by timeline/added is frustrating. I don't really use the drop-down because it is faster to just copy and paste the person's UN in the "non-buddy" box when I am doing something suck as bulk sticking.
& -- in inventory it's a choice, so I only get annoyed when I log out. I always sort by rarity in inventory so that CWs are off by themselves until I put them in my wardrobe. There are also times when stack size is a useful sort in inventory.
I am curious as to what its usefulness in inventory is?

What is timeline's usefulness in inventory?
For me personally I use it when I want to know what the last item I got is. This is useful when questing and I get a morty card - I don't have to hunt through my items to find it (although admittedly, user price works well here also). But it's not just morty cards - I could get something that I would like to save in my special archives or my wardrobe, which are not categories I typically look out for. Once I receive it, I can go to my inventory and sort by timeline to find it easily.
I also find it useful when mass reading to my pets, especially when there is an event going on that gives you random items. Often I'm bulk buying books from the NPC store, and I want that book to be the last thing in my inventory so that it's easiest to click on. When I sort by timeline, it's more likely to be after any stray event items that I've picked up along the way.
I always think in cases like this, where someone wants something to change, it's better when possible to add features rather than take features away. Maybe to others, having timeline sort is useful for friends and CW items, the way it is useful for me and others in inventory. If there was a way to toggle these things in preferences, I think that would be a good solution.
Please, please, please let us choose how to sort things. I don't want to lose the timeline sort options, but I definitely miss the alphabetical sorting in the wardrobe, for instance, and I can easily see others struggling with that kind of thing too.
For casual CW directory browsing, finding the most recent batch of releases in the non-CW item directory, and sorting my inventory, sorting by timeline works well for me. It's nice in my inventory if I forget to clear items out before I do something else (like if I pull food to feed my gourmand with quest rewards still in my inventory, or like recently when I forgot to put some items into my wardrobe before questing)
Well, at no point did I say that there couldn't be options. I am asking the default be changed, particularly in these situations where timeline, which I don't find useful personally for anything, is not only the default but the only option.
Timeline sorting for friends strikes me as unlikely to be useful for anyone who's been here very long. I joined in 2017 and I have ~50ish friends, most of whom I friended after a conversation on some topic of mutual interest, like Transformers or belly dancing, and I really don't recall when most of those conversations happened.

I don’t think the default should be changed just because a couple people are having issues.
I prefer timeline over alphabetical, and would be really upset if this was changed just for a couple people being upset.
That being said maybe if we were given the CHOICE to set our own defaults it would suit everyone better. I don’t agree with taking away something to suit just certain people, like written said it would be better to add a toggle than just change it outright.
I've been here for almost 10 years and the first person on my friend's list is my best friend . I would be pretty upset if she was kicked to the end of the list. :(
As for timeline in the inventory, I use that exclusively and would find it hard to function otherwise. For example if I get a morty card deep into questing, I don't want to scan 100+ items looking for it, instead I scroll down and expect it to be at the bottom / most recent item.
If they add more options where you can set your own default, fine, but don't change it for everyone just because you don't like it. Agree with all this below:
Personally, the friend timeline sort on the drop down lists bugs me, I really wish there was an option to sort it alphabetically. Ironically, the place where I would appreciate a timeline sort is on the friend page itself, where its alphabetical.
I nearly exclusively use the timeline sort in inventory - mainly for the reasons other people mention. But its also extremely useful for when an item pops up unexpectedly in my inventory. With a timeline sort it gives me hints and clues for what might have generated the item.
I would also love, love, love a timeline sort in shops/galleries so I can just scan the first page of my shop/gallery to find items I may have sent to the wrong place. It would also help in my selling shops so I can more easily find items recently placed in shop that may have more volatile prices.
In the wardrobe I like both timeline sorts (when items were made, so similar items are grouped together), and when I added items to the wardrobe so I can find the newer items I've added that I'm not so familiar with. But I too would love to add the option to sort alphabetically.

I prefer timeline to alphabetical; I know where my friends are in the list, so that I'm not surprised by an impromptu name change.
The new wardrobe being sorted by timeline is one of the worst things on this site no sarcasm. It's impossible to find anything because I'd already memorized what page this or that item was on. Now I have to sit there for three times as long to find one specific item.
I don't care about friends, or inventory, or anything else that timeline sorting gets used on. But for the love of all things sacred, change the wardrobe back to alphabetical by default.
I rely on timeline sort in inventory, CW shops, and the wardrobe. I would be very upset to lose it.
Having different sorting methods as an option is fine. We don't need to make some users' experience worse just so others can have a better one.
Yeah, I use timeline for the wardrobe as well - I'm more familiar with when items came out than their names - we have over 20 000 official wearables.
For the inventory I choose to use timeline so my most recent items are at the end (useful for restocking / moving things from galleries / pet treasures, so I don't lose track of what I should be putting where!) and I use the timeline option in the wardrobe to (so my most recently added items come first).
But for friends I'd like to have the option of making it alphabetical (or maybe even a custom order setting like we have with our pets ordering... or having the option of "favourite" friends first, so I can have the ones I would send things to at the front of the list). I can't use the timeline ordering for friends as I can never work out how far down the list a particular friend should be, so I always just type their name into the 'non buddy' box.
I think it would be fair (assuming it's possible coding-wise of course!) to give us the option of how we want to sort things like our friends list rather than automatically changing the default. I just don't see why others who like the current default settings should be inconvenienced by any changes (if I loved the default setting, I would be pretty miffed if it was changed!)

Which makes me wonder what the point of "favorite friends" are.

I don't know what the point of favorite friends is either, but in my experience, trying to use the favorites feature simply makes it seem like you have no other friends. For example, when I favorited one friend, everyone else disappeared from the friends drop down, so I unfavorited and don't use the feature. Not sure what use there is in making it harder to access your other friends.
In addition, this is also how I use the wardrobe:
