I'm not a big fan of the forum giftboxes, and here are the reasons why:

  • They appear to encourage mindless spamming. - I'll admit it, I participated in this some last night. But it seems to skirt the spirit of the thing. Shouldn't we be encouraging active discussion and fun games or conversations with the giftboxes being a nice little reward for those who might otherwise keep silent? Instead, we've got a bunch of junk threads.
  • Another event to delete. - I've mentioned in a suggestion thread that I'd like to be able to mute some events. Giftbox ones would be a part of that. In some ways I'd rather not know and just be pleasantly surprised to find it in my inventory.
  • Inconsistent restocking. - The availability of prizes seems to be tied to staff's ability to stock them. I'm not really sure why. But it is frustrating to go to redeem the boxes and get the "Oh no! It looks like the prize pool is currently empty. We stock the prizes for these manually, so please check again soon! Your gift box has not been taken so you will be able to try again later." There is no sense of when they might be available again.
  • They're ugly. - This one is minor and a personal preference - when they get stuck sitting in my inventory waiting for a restock, I hate having to look at them. They're just not my aesthetic. XD

All in all I had about a day of curiosity and excitement over the giftboxes, but I'm over it and everything that has to do with them because of the reasons above. At this point, I'm tempted to stop posting on the forums just to avoid getting more. If it wasn't also Masq, I probably would.

Some people think that the giftboxes will ruin the economy, but honestly, the pricier things that I've received from the giftboxes are things that I've kept (put in my wardrobe, collection, or fed to my pet) that I otherwise wouldn't have bought any time soon. So neither in buying nor selling have they affected the market in any way. I predict there may be a dip in prices in a few items, but since giftboxes are limited anyway, this will stabilize soon enough.

They're only lasting for the next week.

Forums are always spammy and full of irrelevant stuff during events, so at least, there is a way to profit from all the spam via the giftboxes - which isn't the case with other events.

EDIT : You've been given a Forum Giftbox for participating in the forums! Why not open it and see what's inside?

I know they aren't lasting forever, but it doesn't mean they won't return. I'd rather they didn't.

I like them and usually the only places people spam in are the masq forum in a topic specifically for this type of thing. I could see the point of having to click the ok ping every time gets annoying.

I believe the first reason is the biggest issue; the others could be overcome. It rewards spamming, and fills the threads with dull repetitive posts. Although that's not what's anticipated, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The forum boxes are still fun to get and open. I rather have the boxes prolonged all event long with lowered chances to obtain from posting to not trigger a gold rush, and have them the chance to drop small amounts of currency instead of too many rare and pricey items.

I honestly get most of my boxes simply by claiming dances on the masq threads -- I agree that they don't warrant their own forum threads just for the boxes, because you get them just by participating in the event.

As for the prizes themselves, I can't complain. I've gotten a good couple (rather expensive) books that Jack still needed to read from them, so I'm content enough :P

I have 2 that I've been checking almost every hour while I'm awake, but the pool always seems to be empty. Great idea in theory, horrible in execution when people who aren't awake while the staff are online and stocking the pool are getting them and can't get anything out of them. Also agree about the spam, that's a bit excessive.

  • This is honestly my only beef with them. They're a nice idea, but this part kinda kills the fun. I understand that this is another way of having something like the Free Shop (which is known to create lag, if I remember correctly), but needing to wait for restocks as though the boxes are an actual shop seems a bit off. I understand where the site wants to go with these, but I find that this aspect needs to be revised. Otherwise, love the boxes, love the prizes, and thank you so much for the free stuff :)

My biggest annoyance is the spamming. You'd get a verbal warning any day of the week for making a random thread purely for the sake of upping your post count, or farming forum points.

I would not be mad in the slightest if the boxes were done away with permanently. Just open the free shop, or have a random chance of getting a dance invite from an NPC for 3x the trinkets or something. Something that doesn't involve a mindless "boxboxbox pls" stampede in the forums because of free stuff.

I've gotten three and garbage from all three. They encourage spamming, which goes against all the rules on such on Subeta. Bad idea, please stop.

the topics are literally called "farming for boxes" so-

also yes, its a pain in the ass that besides getting the boxes we need to be lucky to use them - I am fortunate cause I can be around all day but I have friends who have 100+ boxes and aren't being able to open them cause in the short time they are around the prizes are out of stock; how fair is that? this gives a clear advantage for users with more time

But that's the same with the free shop. I think if the boxes have a chance to drop a small amount of currency (or by default if there's nothing in the prize pool), then maybe the prize pool won't be exhausted so quickly.

I like it, i think its fun and its also fun to see the spamming words people say..i screencaped some. its being silly yeah, but its not like it happens all the time. and its also sort of liberating bc these forums are so....pedantic at times. now ill go back to my spamming lol

No it's not - in the free shop if you want something you sit there and restock, which is kinda already done when you sit and post in the forums hoping to get a box. But then you have to wait again to open it. And if you don't manage to open it it's just wasted time.

also i don't think it is breaking the "spamming rules anyways"

usually people say more then 3 words and they don't spam in a row so it's not really spamming / breaking the rules

Looking back, I think it's more of an inconsistency issue than a time issue. I had no problem opening the boxes this afternoon, but now the prize pool is empty, and if they didn't refill the shop this evening then it really sucks if your schedule doesn't match up.

Yes, I think you put it perfectly~ the inconsistency is caused because someone has to stock the shop manually and I imagine staff have more important things to do...
