I was crying for two hours tonight (well, yesterday as it's 1am) and I was scared out of my mind. I need to tell you the story:

I've been having problems with my bathroom since 2011. It's been leaking and "repaired", but no effort were made into putting in repairs. It's now 2018... I had a flood of water in January and I contacted my landlord. He sent me a plumber. The plumber said he wasn't going to fix the drain because it was so rusted that if he took it out, things would break and there would be even more problems. He said my landlord needs to put in a new bathroom floor, put in new pipes and install a new bathtub. My landlord FINALLY came over in February 2018 and did "repairs". He cut out the piece of rotten wood and put a new piece down (yes, he cut out a square and put in a new square). Then he put floor putty over it. I'm still having problems... my bathroom fan is broken, the floor putty is turning into paste in that corner and the rot underneath is sopping wet. My brother moved in below me and has huge patches of water on his bathroom ceiling.

I had enough: I called bylaw. The officer came over and inspected. I have tons of mold that was never taken care of, the fan needs to be replaced, my door needs to be fixed, the ventilation needs to be cleaned out and it goes on and on.

My landlord text me yesterday saying he was going to evict me and that I better repair what I've ruined before I find another place to live. He also said I'm a liar. That a plumber was over and he found no problems with the bathroom (Ok. I have LOTS of photos that say otherwise).

I mean.. his texts wern't like that.. he was harassing me. And they were long and I felt so intimidated. I was so scared and I bawling my eyes out. I called the police. She told me he can't evict me as it takes months, even years. And having accidents in the kitchen is normal. Happens to everyone. She said to call them if I hear anything suspicious or if my landlord shows up banging at my door and yelling.

I'm so... distraught. If it's not one thing, it's another. First my brother passes and now this.

I am going to go through the tenant board and I need to find a free legal clinic.

P.S. I called my mom while I was sobbing and she told me to "get a fucking grip". Now I'm scared to sleep in case he comes here. I'm also scared to leave because he might come into my unit and smash all my stuff.

Pinging updates: I can only ping 10 at a time. I think I got everyone?

I don't know how my landlord can sleep at night. Harassing and intimidating someone with a disability. I'm scared of people to begin with.

I just want to crawl into a shell and never come out

Yeah they really don't make the world a better place... but people like that do exist and it's terrifying.

I myself could never confront someone like that at all, I would just deal with the mess and the issue and go about my life. All to avoid confrontation and people.

Things really need to get better for you... they just have to! :(

Is it a private owned or a company leasing to you? Because rot like that takes an awful lot of neglect and if you have repair request forms for every time you asked for help or something to be seen he'll look so bad. Any forms also from plumbers or other services with statements of the issues will help too. Sadly its not uncommon once you file a complaint on a landlord for them to try to evict. The police is right in that it takes time to get a successful eviction drawn ip. He has to explain and demonstrate the so called issues (late rent would mean showing it unpaid for at least 3 months, or showing how your neglectful actions caused horrible damage to the place etc ect) and file with the county and get a judge to sign off on the papers. He can not simply suddenly call you saying you're evicted. Even an easy eviction can take a few months to sort based where you live and if he can show he has proper reason. However I feel like you're one who pays bills on time and care about things, otherwise you'd not have tried to get things fixed. So find any and all papers you can regarding repairs. If he is a simp,e property manager he has higher ups he reports to and they may not be aware he's doing this. Take it to them if you must.

It's a private owner. He owns four other buildings and I hear two of the buildings on the island are in terrible disrepair, as in falling apart (especially the cottage he owns. We know people who know him).

Unfortunately, I never kept a documentation on when I called, what the issue was. One time.. it took him 7 months to repair my leaking bathroom sink! I have photos that I put on a USB stick and I'll be printing them off and going to a few places.

The only thing I've damaged in 8 years, is the floor. I had a pie plate explode. I know my rights. You don't have to fix any damage until you move out. I've sent the texts to the bylaw officer and I did send them to the police last night.

He's the type of person where he says something, and never returns your calls or comes to check on the problem. He's a smoother talker and told my brother that this building his 10 years old. We went to see when this apartment was built.. it was built 26 years ago!!

I feel like shit. I slept literally watching my bedroom door and I didn't take my tranquilizer or use my CPAP.

And yes, I pay my bills on time. Rent is always paid when I get my checks.

I did take a very brief shower last night. The tub was moving on me in the shower, but since I was so mentally and physically exhausted, I didn't know what was real and what wasn't (but the know the feeling of rocking beneath my feet).

My dad is an asshole and he claims he doesn't know anything about the situation. The only reason he wants to evict me is because I didn't give him a chance to do repairs and went straight to bylaw. My landlord has had opportunity to do repairs since the leak started in April 2011. I chose to go to bylaw because I KNEW my landlord wouldn't come back for the problem. He's already told me a new tub and floor "isn't happening", yet he can go to Cuba year round.

My landlord's last text to me was "I suggest you repair the floor and find another place to live". So yes, I want a lawyer.

Yeah, fuck this guy, he sounds like a total asshat, and you definitely don't deserve all the garbage he's throwing at you. Until you see your lawyer -- keep everything related to your apartment documented. Texts, records of when phone calls happened, photos, paperwork, anything because this guy is the type to throw you under the bus, and you want to have your ass covered.

Is there any chance of you being able to find somewhere else to live, because seven years of this is a bit ridiculous. Also I would invest in some dry shampoo to help with the times between showers because you obviously don't want to be hurting yourself during the process. Also is there maybe a gym nearby, or a friend's shower you can borrow until this gets sorted?

There is a gym nearby, but I'm a germaphobe. I'm prone to planters warts and public showers are just... no! My brother lives in the unit below me, but I'm pretty sure he won't want to see me everyday just so I can shower.

I bought a journal, so I'll be writing stuff in it soon.

WOW, I want to slap your mother.

I'm so sorry, bb, that's awful and totally uncalled for all around. I'd check with bylaw again - if I'm understanding the role correctly - as they might be able to direct you more easily to filing a formal complaint. Keep those photos. Make war.

You've got this. <3

Idk where you live but I recently watched a show on Netflix called Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords. It takes place in England and taught me a LOT about aspects I never lnew existed. From what o read and can compare to this new knowledge it sounds like a revenge eviction on his part, and those are illegal pretty much everywhere In the show you'd see an inspection happen amd then a few days later a panicked call to the inspection place of the tenant freaking out because the landlord tried to boot them. The advice is the same. Stand your ground and keep ALL paperwork he tries to send.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

I never knew about the landlord and tenant board or the city bylaw until a few years ago. Unfortunately, I never knew that I should keep a document of when he showed up, what we talked about and if repairs were made, if they lasted, ect... BUT! At least I have pictures from 2011 that shows I'm not lying.

I'm just scared that he'll raise my rent so high that I won't be able to afford it. It says he needs to give a written 90 day notice of a rent increase. He's never done that. He usually just shows up at the door, says it's going up $20-$30 and it's effective today. If that happens again, I know my rights now. I don't have to pay the increase if I don't have a written notice.

I think I'm also going to call a plumber at my own cost, record the conversation and see if I can get reimbursed if the lawyer says it's something to pursue. I'm also going to ask my brother to be here if I get a plumber so I also have a witness.

I'm firmly of the opinion that a landlord that treats tenants so poorly - especially a tenant that makes rent payments on time and is responsible with reporting repair needs - should have their properties taken away. You don't want to play nice with people? Fine. Go find a way to make your income that doesn't allow you to unfairly harass and intimidate others. -_-

When it comes to meeting with the attorney, I can offer a few tips that I hope will be helpful. (I've worked with and for attorneys for three years - though not specifically in the area of landlord/tenant issues.)

Like others have said, keep and bring with you any paperwork or pictures (including those threatening texts) that might help build a case. Also bring your receipts for rent payment. (Or copies of your checks from the bank if that's how you paid.) If you can go back as far as a year that would be great because it shows your reliability in living up to your lease. That lease is a contract that both parties have to live up to - which it sounds like he hasn't been doing for years.

It also might be a good idea to get statements from other tenants who have rented from this guy. It sounds like he's been treating a lot of people badly which can only help to prove the problem is with him.

Most attorneys - even those that run a private firm - offer a free consultation where you can explain your situation and they can decide whether you have a case. I'm really hoping the legal aid you talk to will be sympathetic and eager to help but please know that you have options. A lot of attorneys are willing to hold costs on your file until the case concludes so you won't be receiving bills you can't pay. If you do seek a second opinion, ask the attorney to explain their fee arrangement up-front and in terms you can understand.

I wish you much luck and a speedy resolution with as little anxiety as possible. ❤
