So I know some of you are a little confused, concerned, or worried about how the tournament is going to go down! Sorry for keeping the details secret until now! Hopefully this thread will have everything you need to know. If it doesn’t, ask! I’m sure you’re not the only one with the same question, and it’ll be helpful to have all your questions here!

In many ways, the Triwizard Tournament will be very much like the terms we have had in the past. Students/members will participate in challenges, activities, and class lessons to earn points. However, instead of earning points towards the House Cup, you’ll be earning points for your school (either Hogwarts, Ilvermorny, or The Alexandrian Academy) to win the Triwizard Cup!

In addition to the normal challenges and class lessons, we are also introducing two new types of activities: Lightning Challenges and Roleplay Challenges (see more about these challenges here).

If you are planning to participate, you will need to be assigned to a school. The schools are assigned by the admins in order to try to keep everything even, however you can influence which school you are assigned to by posting your preferences in this thread: TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT - School Preference/Sign Up Once able, the admins will assign you to a school and invite you to that school’s private forum group.

Before the tournament officially begins, the Goblet of Fire will be choosing champions! While all students of the schools will be earning points towards the Triwizard Cup, there are some challenges that only the school’s champions will be able to complete. Each school will be allowed 2 champions. The champions will be chosen from a pool of up to 5 nominated candidates for champion, which will be selected by each school as a group. To help your school nominate champions, please check your school’s private forum group forums! Nominated candidates must be selected by each school prior to July 5th.

The Goblet of Fire ceremony to choose the champions is set to take place on July 8th.

The tournament itself is scheduled to start July 14th and end on September 15th.

Since we have decided to introduce roleplay-based challenges, we also are introducing a few rules for the tournament to keep the competition fair. These rules are, of course, in addition to the main rules for the group.

[li]Special abilites have been suspended for the tournament. This means no one will be able to use their special ability for the event. Anyone caught using a special ability during roleplay activities that yield points will be considered cheating and will no longer be able to earn points from roleplay activities. [li]For champion-only roleplay challenges, only the champions can submit a solution for points. If anyone else posts in the thread, it will be overlooked and not awarded points. [li]There is an exception to the previous rule - each school may substitute a champion for ONE CHALLENGE ONLY. So for example, if your school has a champion that will be away for the 2nd champion-only challenge, you may substitute that champion for another person from your team. However, you will not be able to substitute another champion for the rest of the tournament.
There are also some things you need to know for the tournament!

[li]Clubs and workshops will also be suspended for the tournament. We would like to keep the focus on the tournament itself. Clubs and workshops will resume again once the tournament has completed. [li]We will not be utilizing Prefects this term. Schools may appoint someone to maintain any threads needed to help keep the team motivated and is not mandatory. You guys need to work as a team, so figure out what works best for you! [li]Class lessons will not be open for the entire tournament. Class lessons will last for 3 weeks only. Once the tournament is over, they may go back to lasting the entire term. [li]We will not be using any Member Taught Classes for the tournament.

UPDATE 7/9/2017: School Champions

Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - Corvus Farlan Montgomery - Brandon Calder

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - Lenore Addlebourne - Teresa Evans (Terry)

The Alexandrian Academy for the Arcane Arts - River Alcott - Zala Tulasi

Info on Lightning Challenges and Roleplay Challenges

What are Lightning Challenges?

Lightning Challenges are very easy challenges that you will only be given a short amount of time to complete. The time frame for these challenges can vary from a day to three days, where a regular challenges usually have a time frame of up to a week.

For example, one of the challenges may be a short trivia challenge. However, you may only have 24 hours to complete it before it’s closed!

What are Roleplay Challenges?

Roleplay Challenges are similar to the roleplay class lessons we have had in the past. You will be given a task to complete, and it’s your job to find a way to complete the task. You must do this while remaining in character. There may be more than one way to complete the task at hand, so think creatively!

Roleplay Challenges are broken down into two categories: all play and champion only. For challenges that are “all play”, this means any student character can participate in the challenge. For champion only challenges, only students that are chosen by the Goblet of Fire to be one of the champions will be able to submit a solution for the task. For both types of Roleplay Challenges, participants will be given approximately a week to complete their submissions.

Roleplay Challenges will be graded using a predetermined rubric to judge the participant’s entry. The rubric is not readily available at this time, however it will take into consideration items like the creativity of the solution, style, and conventions (such as grammar, punctuation, etc.)

How often will Roleplay Challenges be?

I cannot give exact dates for these challenges, however I can guarantee that there will be none in the first week of the tournament. There will be 3 or 4 of the champion only challenges all together, however. I cannot confirm how many all play challenges there will be.

Frequently Asked Questions If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please feel free to post! If it's a question we think everyone will have, we will add it.

Since special abilities are suspended, what happens if I am assigned to Hogwarts and my Hogwarts character has a special ability?

You will still be able to use the character, however you will not be able to use the special ability to gain an advantage during the event. If you feel that you cannot play your character without their special ability (i.e. if your character is a half breed that is difficult to play without taking it into consideration), then we highly suggest creating a new character for the tournament. You will be able to resume your special ability character once the tournament is over and we resume the House Cup at Hogwarts.

Do champions need to perform the tasks that Prefects normally do?

Nope! A champion’s only duty is to perform the roleplay challenges that are designated as champion-only. If a champion would like to take on a leadership role, that is completely up to the individual champion.

Am I allowed to roleplay more than one character during the tournament?

Of course! However, you will only be able to use one character to earn points from roleplay challenges. So if you are from Ilvermorny and want to play both your Ilvermorny and Hogwarts characters, only your Ilvermorny character will be able to earn points. Similarly, if you are chosen as champion and have a champion character and a non-champion character from the same school, only your champion character will be able to award points during champion challenges.

You may play any character from any school during roleplay that does not earn points.

Do I need to post my character info on the student rosters?

Posting your character info is not strictly necessary, but it may be helpful for you to keep track of your character’s personality, appearance, and pertinent info!

When we are nominating champions, can we submit anyone?

Technically yes! I highly suggest you submit names of members who are willing to take on the task though! We don’t want any Harry Potters here.

Does our Goblet of Fire have an Age Line?

Nope! Students of any age may submit their name as champion. The committee for the tournament has worked tirelessly to make the tournament safe for anyone to participate in.

Do we have to submit 5 names into the Goblet of Fire?

Nope! You must have a minimum of 2 names and a maximum of 5 names.

Will there be prizes at the end of the tournament?

Absolutely! The winning school will be awarded a prize pack, along with an extra bonus for the school’s champions.

Each school’s top scorers will also earn a fun prize!

Will challenges be reopened near the end of the tournament?

Unfortunately, since the tournament will only be lasting 2 months, we will not be reopening challenges at the end of the tournament. So participate in them while you can!

If I got assigned to a school that is not Hogwarts, but want to use our Hogwarts character, can we have the character transfer to Ilvermorny or The Alexandrian Academy?

We would prefer you do not transfer your character to another school. We would prefer you create a new character for the tournament. However, if you feel that you will not be able to create a new character for the tournament, you are allowed to transfer your character to your school. If you do decide to transfer your school though, you will not be able to transfer it back once the tournament is over.

If I got assigned to a school that is not Hogwarts, am I allowed to transfer my character to Hogwarts after the tournament is over or will I be forced to retire it?

At this time, we are allowing members to transfer their character to Hogwarts on a case by case basis. If you would be interested in transferring your character to Hogwarts, please let me know before the start of the next term.

Where is the Triwizard Tournament taking place?

The Triwizard Tournament is taking place a Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is located in the USA, specifically in Massachusetts.

What schools are participating in the Triwizard Tournament?

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and The Alexandrian Academy for the Arcane Arts are the three schools participating! You can learn more about all three in this thread: TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT - School Preference/Sign Up

Thanks for the FAQ (:

However, I feel that Lightning Challenges are quite unfair. Think of people going to school/university/work, they can't check all of the time. Another important thing are time zones...I'm from Europe and could completely miss out challenges when I'm asleep. Given the fact that we don't know where the other people of the three schools live, one school could have a big advantage if their time zone is close to the one the admins of the cult live in. I'd say the Lightning challenges should last one day - that gives everyone a fair chance. Especially since the possibilities to earn points are limited and tied to challenges. And yes, even 10 points can make a difference. And let's be honest, even one day is quite short if you consider people have stuff outside of Subeta to do. I feel that if they'd only last some hours, it would take a deep impact on the psychologial stress level of a person, especially the champions, because they are constantly thinking a challenge COULD be there. Given the fact that the tournament will last 2 months and being at one's beck and call, it could even lead to health problems from not getting enough sleep if people are really ambitious.

This is all great information! I can't wait for the 14th.

I would have to agree with Anne though. I know I sometimes can't check the site as often as I'd like because of work, and my current job location has no reception what-so-ever. I feel like making the Lightning Challenges as short as a few hours could potentially cause people to not even try because thwy're constantly missing out. Having them last a whole day instead would make things a little more fair on the global scale.

Everything else sounds wonderful though, and I really can't wait to get started and see what you guys have in store for us. (:

Could you please answer to my post from 1st July? I'd like to know before the champions get chosen/nominated. Seeing that agreed with me, it would be nice.

Sorry about that.

I understand the concern about the challenge. We did take into consideration the time zone difference and were planning on staggering any lightning challenges that were going to be available for less than a day. If it will help to make them a day at least, then we will certainly make the adjustment. It wasn't our intention to have it be an additional stressor to anyone. The points for the lightning challenges will be minimal, if it makes a difference. Since it is a new thing, I'd still like to try at leeway one and see how it goes. If it seems it'll be a problem, we definitely won't continue them.

Selfishly, I like the idea of Lightning Challenges being 24 hours, just because it means I probably can participate and I like participating!

It's still a drastic change of timeline from how things usually are, where you have at least a week to complete.

If it's a timeline shorter than 24 hours, I will just cross my fingers I'm online at the right time (well, online and noticing events!). c:

I think making the lightning challenges at least 24 hours would be more fair to everyone. I would hate to see anyone not want to participate because they feel that it's unfair. =(

I appreciate the thought going into the challenges :) Also, do you happen to know around what time on the 8th the ceremony will be taking place? I'm going to be at a conference most of the day but will be sure to check in on my phone/tablet whenever I can.

Hi everyone!

I updated the first post to include the school champions. I'm still waiting on the character names from a couple of people, so I will update as I get them.

Please note that Lightning Challenges have been updated - they will now last from a day to three days.

I also plan on adding some useful links sometime today or tomorrow.
