Hi guys! I was wondering if any of you had a gastric surgery done on them? (bypass, sleeve etc) I went to my yearly check up yesterday and even though I have Hashimoto immune disease, no cholesterol or diabetes, I am seriously fat and it looks like nothing can help me anymore.

So how was it for you guys? Do you regret having the surgery? Is the flab skin terrible? I've heard so so many horror stories ..

I've thought about it, but I'm kind of afraid of the anesthesia and the after-pain more than anything. That, and the follow-up surgeries you'd need to get rid of the excess skin.

I thought about it, sort of, but I've also heard all the horror stories. My cousin just had it done and as far as she's said, she is miserable since there is practically nothing that she is allowed to eat. I would personally be worried about the anesthesia and the cosmetic procedures that you have to have after to get rid of the excess skin.

Have you looked into how you need to change your lifestyle after the surgery? Many people find it easier to just make lifestyle changes and forego the surgery.

Sorry to hear things aren't working out. Hashimoto's is really lame. But I'd be concerned that getting weight-loss surgery might not exactly help - sure, it would take any fat away, but wouldn't the Hashimoto's make it accumulate back on?

I assume you take medicine for it, yeah? If you're considering surgery, would targeting the thyroid be better off in the long run? That way any weight loss you do pull off will stick, which is the ultimate goal!

Of course I don't know you and any steps you've taken, so this is all me trying to be supportive, haha. I just wouldn't want you to have a wasted surgery that could have been resolved another way - those things are pricey nowadays!

Keep us updated with whatever you decide to do! c:

The surgery is free in Canada. I weight 350 pound, which is more than what is needed to qualify. I do not take medication because my hormones are normal. They are .. simply letting me rott in my own grease. I've gotten told numerous times that 1) I workout which is very good and it has "protective effects" and 2) I eat very well, so no need to stress.

The thing is that I'm still fat.

Oh, man! Good deal, haha. I guess I always forget about health insurance up there.

My apologies, my thought process went from Hashimoto's -> thyroid -> hormones. It's good yours aren't out of whack! And that you exercise and eat well - I shifted into a similar lifestyle just over a year ago, using My Fitness Pal to track calories and whatnot. Do you count calories as well? It was pretty hard at first, but thankfully it's grown on me!

I don't. I used to, but I was going way too low (I have mental anoxeria. Smaller everything can be dangerous..) I would often starve myself and I still make myseld throw up. I've been trying very hard to lose weight, especially in the past 3 years. It looks like everything I try to dig into turns out to be "nothing". I'm very fit and I love to move, but carrying all this weight is very annoying.

The most I'll say is that my one cousin's wife had a version of gastric bypass done and if she eats more than a cup of anything, she winds up very, very ill.

Ultimately, it's your choice but please be safe.

I'm fat myself... I gained 150 pounds, which weighs me in at 275LBS D:

My mom's cousin was horribly obese her whole life and she had the gastric by pass done years ago. She can't eat a lot. One time she came over for Christmas dinner and she threw up everything she ate :/ Which was like, two bites of turkey and everything else.

Too each their own I guess. I wouldn't get any surgeries done... I'd want to lose the weight naturally, but I'm having a hard time with that because I'm not very active and my diet is, well... horrible.

I actually want a tummy tuck and a lypo, but my DR was very against that saying it will only come back twice as bad and besides--who can afford cosmetic surgery?

I might need to get a lypo at some point. My fat is not stuck on my muscle - it's moving and flabbing toward the bottom. I have a lot of lean muscles under the fat, which makes it look very weird somehow. I have "abs" marks on my fat? I gives you an idea of my situation ha ha .. But yeah. I'm fairly against the sugery unless it gets too much. Which is .. going there.

I just found this on the net, but to give you an idea, this is EXACTLY what my body looks like. I've always had the two stomachs, even when I was thinner.

Is your fat more on your upper body? Mine is on my butt, tighs and it stops at my knees. I have lean forearms and very muscular biceps with flabby skin.

I'm well proportioned, so my fat is everywhere; however, most of it is my upper body like my above and below stomach (as I call them lol).

I honestly don't think it sounds like any of the surgeries to cut your stomach size is going to actually help you. Especially after your description of where it hangs on your muscle, etc. What type of specialists have you seen? And how many? What type of second and third opinions have you gotten?

I'm very concerned that you aren't on a medication to manage your Hashimoto's. Have you had ALL the tests and had them second opinion checked? My mother's current GP STILL cannot read a thyroid test and she doesn't have one. She has to remind him what medication level is right for her. The thyroid is a nightmare test most doctors aren't capable of reading it right in my experience.

I'm not trying to be a pain, I've just seen similar before and I don't believe the recommendation to get a bypass is right.

I've seen several endocrinologist through the years. I've seen one 1-2? years ago and while he accepted the fact that my auto-immune cells are positive (Hashimoto's), he refused to give me medication because of the fact that it may give heart diseases (which I called bullshit). He then told me to pursuit my workout routine. That's pretty much all.

My family doctor suggested the bypass/sleeve, but I told him bluntly that it wouldn't help me at all. The fat is especially on my butt and over the knees, which is very hard to lose tbh.

I've had all test done and several thyroid screening. It shows that it doesn't work properly and that it has small singularities on it, but they are not growing. I have another paper to see a new endocrinologist, which I will do. I have a lot of symptoms and it has been hell for a very long time. I just want someone to help me and listen to me before I die. Because I feel like my condition will get the best of me someday.

I'm sorry, and I can understand how you feel. I'm chronically ill with several problems and so is my mother. One of hers is also Hashi, so I have some idea of what goes on with that. She actually had her thyroid completely removed well over a decade ago because it was growing life threatening goiters.

I know it's super difficult to keep on hunting for new specialists and new doctors, but keep on keeping on. A sleeve is not going to resolve this, so I call massive bullshit on your family doctor. It's not going to change the way your body reacts to food and itself, only proper medication to manage what Hashi's is screwing up will start the process.

Nothing pisses me off quite as much as a doctor just turning a blind eye.

My goiters are not dangerous. However, my throid is just not working properly. Since my hormones are all clear, they refuse to give me mediation. They wish to wait until the level goes down.
