Hello everyone.

Today was the first time I prepared grilled cheese for lunch. I heared about it before and wasn't sure what it is. Then I found a recipe on the internet. Here is my question: It is just bread with cheese, isn't it? Did I miss something? Do you have any special ingredients? Tell me about grilled cheese!!! :)

Greetings, Kassy

Basic grilled-cheese is basically buttered bread with cheese. I usually put a pinch of sugar on top of the buttery bread before cooking it. I also switch cheese for mozarella and I often put apples, pears, strawberries, chicken .. when it suits my mood.

In its most base form, yes, its just cheese and bread. But the beauty of grilled cheese is not only with the melted cheese goodness, but also with the amount of whatever you want that you can put in there - personally, I love mine with some diced onion and green pepper inside of it, other times salsa, maybe even some spinach. Cut your sandwich in half and dip it into a favorite soup, and you have a pleasant lunch!

Well, the classic pairing is probably white bread with cheddar cheese and tomato soup.

I like putting raw onion and cooked bacon in mine. Sometimes ham. I like dipping it in sweet and sour sauce.

Butter the outside of your bread, put cheese inside, pan fry golden brown. Simple. It's all about what you do with the insides that has turned grilled cheese into a foodie trend.

My luxury grilled cheese: Aged cheddar, carmelized onions, pulled pork. Fantastic.

Ooooh, now I get it. It reminds me of the sandwich toaster that saved my life during university.

My favorite was peanut butter with slices of banana, a pinch of cinnamon and a little bit of honey. So good. I see why you want to make these with cheese and whatever you find in the kitchen :D

Thank you, , , ! I will definitely try some of your recipes :)

Oh man, I love grilled cheese! I used to make it for lunch as a kid and pair it with a can of tomato soup! It's especially good with tillamook chedder cheese on sourdough bread! I don't know if you have tillamook cheese where you live but if you can get some, i'd highly recommend it!

Don't you forget about me~

Grilled cheese is the absolute best! As others have said, it's basically bread and cheese. It's often made with butter on the bread, though, so that the bread gets crispy. I like to spread a thin coat of mayo on the outside of the bread (instead of butter) -- it still gets crispy but it's a little healthier.

Thank you!

I love a good grilled cheese, for me my childhood is brought back with the classic white bread with american, then once it is cooked and toasted and melted, I put thick slices of sweet pickles on it. Mm. Hot/cold, sweet/salty, creamy/crunchy. My favorite! (I use a similar hot sandwich device at work and it is amazing.)

Bacon's been mentioned, but it definitely is a match made in heaven. I also second the onion bit, but I love to use this delicious carmelized red onion chutney made by The English Provender company.

If you want to go a step above just cheese, but arent too adventurous, sometimes just putting a slice of tomato on the grilled cheese can kick things up a notch.

Im currently really sick, but I had a grilled cheese yesterday and I not only didnt throw it up, but I wasnt nauseated by it either, so im super pro-grilled-cheese at the moment.

My mom makes the best grilled cheese! She butters the pan and allows the sourdough bread to toast a little, while the bread is toasting she grates Gruyere cheese and Vermont white cheddar cheese one ounce each will do, She also prepares apple wood smoked bacon before she makes the grilled cheese. Once the cheeses are grated she pours them onto the toasted bread tops it with bacon and the last piece of bread. She then allows the cheese to melt and serves it while its still hot ^-^

- Grilled cheese is one of the only things my fiance can make, so I let him cook those. XD He uses potato bread and spreads some butter on both sides. Then, he uses two slices of cheddar or American cheese. If we're lucky, we have creamy tomato soup on the side.

Maybe another thing to add is ham?

The most exciting part of making grilled cheese to me, is actually babysitting it on the pan. I like to make it on the stovetop with light oil or butter on the bread. Just like making eggs over easy.

You can also put a thin layer of mayo inside with some shredded cheese and sauteed broccoli or spinach and it is to die for.

I recommend using mayonnaise instead of butter to grill it in the pan. Lightly spread some mayo on the side(s) you want to grill it, and it turns out more crispy / crunchy than with butter!

Grilled sandwiches with feta cheese, spinach, artichoke hearts, and some mozzarella cheese is the best! Let it sit on the burner for a little bit with some butter on each side until it's just brown and dip in some olive oil mayonnaise. It's super good! Kick it up a bit with some bacon!

I butter one side of two bread slices, place one butter side down on a frying pan and have it on low-med (my stove heats up quickly, its a liar) and place cheese on the non-butter sided side (open face sammich at this point) then top it with the non-buttered sided on the cheese other half (butter side outside basically) and I wait until the cooking side is nice and toasty and flip. at that point the cheese is gluing the breads together and it should hold when you flip.

I've loved grilled cheese since I was like 12. My lifetime goal was to eat 200 of them (like a sims achievement) and I eventually lost count :(
