OMFG why is he so cute?! And the name! I LOVE IT. :D I've had cats for a while and none of my kittens were ever quite so tiny. In fact, one of my cats right now, Emma, she weighs about 15 lbs and has the belly that goes back and forth when she walks.

As far as advice, I would definitely say to stick with natural foods. I feed my girls Blue Buffalo Wilderness. Cats generally need a lot of protein, more than anything else, and that food is made with super high-quality ingredients. It has the perfect combination of everything a cat needs. And apparently it's super yummy because my girls love it and they're pretty picky. Of course, I'd go with the kitten variety right now, but later on, if he has any issues, they have a variety for just about anything. For example, they have a weight control + hairball control variety which is what I give my kitties.

Hmmm...as far as toys go, I'd almost say don't bother with many store-bought ones, lol. My cats are obsessed with cardboard boxes and paper bags and will sleep in them, bite the hell out of them, hold the smaller ones and kick them. I would say though, don't buy any store-bought toys that are made with real fur. Those are just...gross. Kong toys are good, especially the 'kick sacks'...don't know what they're really called, but they're basically a small stuffed rectangle filled with polyfill and catnip and a fake-fur 'tail' attached.

I'm hoping you're going to keep him inside too. Inside cats generally live longer, healthier, happier lives. There's just too much that can go wrong outdoors. Even inside cats need flea/tick prevention though, so I would talk to your vet about getting him started on that once he weighs enough. And I assume you're getting him fixed? That will help, if not stop, him from spraying and yowling as non-fixed male cats tend to do.

Can't think of anything else, but feel free to ping if you have any more questions.

If he has trouble with dry food, try using wet food. Don't soak his food in milk because cats can't really handle the lactose. If you even think you might buy him wet food, even occasionally as a treat when he's older, then at least get him a can or two so he knows what it's like. I didn't think to do that when my cat was a kitten, and she absolutely refuses to eat wet food. Definitely look up what you should look for in cat food, as then you can look at what the ingredient lists on the food while you're shopping and choose something that works better for your budget.

As for litter, price isn't everything. Find a litter that works for your budget and stick to it as much as possible. Cats can get picky if their type of litter is changed. I just buy in bulk so that I always have some. You're also going to want to get him litter trained as soon as possible. I'm not sure of the layout of where you live, but keep a box in the bathroom and one in each bedroom. Keep multiple litterboxes because sometimes a door gets closed, or the box might be too far away. It happens.Clean up any messes outside the litterbox as soon as possible. Invest in pheromone spray in case he does go somewhere that isn't the litterbox. It'll keep him from going in that spot again. Or it should at least. My cat sees it as a challenge, although I'm pretty sure that's just her personality.

Toy wise, the only thing I really get my cat is the little balls that have bells in them. She loves them. Be warned that you will most definitely wake up to bell sounds in the early hours of the morning. You can also get balls that are solid but have little beads inside so that they rattle just enough to make them interesting. Have something that the cat can scratch as well. Even if it's a cheap scratching post. Catnip is also fun.

If there are specific behaviors you want to enforce, this is the time to do it. Like if you don't want him on the furniture, teach him not to get on the furniture. Also get him used to the occasional bath as even indoor cats can get fleas. You don't even need flea shampoo, just Dawn dish soap. It kills the fleas and washes away any dirt. This is the time to teach him anything you can think of, within reason.

Otherwise, develop a feeding schedule. Most cats eat too much when they're allowed to free feed. Make sure he always has fresh water. Play with him frequently as it'll help socialize him, lets him exercise, and lets you relax. He'll be pretty energetic for awhile as he matures so don't be alarmed if it seems like he's always into something. He'll calm down after he's finished growing, if not a little before. If you plan to get him neutered, this will also help as males tend to be less rambunctious afterwards. Cats are pretty fantastic. Neil is absolutely adorable! Congratulations on your new friend!

IS that a TUXEDO kitten!? AWWW! I had a tux 4 years ago, he had feline pica. Which is an eating disorder where they eat anything that is a non food object. We give our current cat a bowl of dry food in the mornings until 1pm then at 1:30 she gets .7 ounces of wet food. That holds her until 6-8 when we eat dinner she gets another .7 ounces. Then at 10:30 pm she gets kibble until 1:30 in the afternoon. As for toys she likes to play with my hairband that broke. It is the flat hairband not the round, she also loves to chase cough drops. She gets new water every 1-2 days, and she has 2 litter boxes. I suggest watching My cat from hell, jackson galaxy has helped A LOT with our baby. We understand her wants and needs now.

I think the only thing I can add is to make sure your kitten has "his own spaces", meaning places he can hide/snuggle and get away to if he needs to. Wouldn't you be upset if you lived somewhere that you didn't have a bedroom? Cats, though moreso when they grow up rather than kittens, can get stressed if they don't have their own space, which can lead to peeing in inappropiate places =c

I also want to second the cardboard box thing, they are fun for cats to shred, and good for keeping their nails healthy! Speaking of nails, make sure you get him used to getting his nails clipped. Personally I just use a human pair or toenail clippers (my cats have their own set), and just start with nipping off the VERRRRRRY tips of all his claws, just to get him used to the sensation. Only do a few toes at a time, and then put him down, pet him, and tell him how wonderful he is. Then you can start working on longer times and reducing the amount of freaking out during nail clipping =3

Please ping me to get my attention, I don't check the forums too often.
So sorry!

I think I bought 9 Lives kitten food. For litter, I like the 4 in 1 Tidy Cats. Moist treats for little baby kitten. Lots of toys, nothing too small (balls, those wand thingies with the toys on the end, etc). NO BALLS OF YARN! Very dangerous. You can find kitten collars at pet stores everywhere. Some of them are superrrr cute.

Congrats on the kitty! He's sooo adorable!

That kitten is seriously adorable. Kittens are my weakness... ugh. I miss when my cats were babies.

Looks like you've got most of the bases covered, but I'll just reinforce what said about nails. You'll definitely save a lot of time and money if you can do it yourself and teach the cat to be okay with it early on. Thankfully cats nails are a lot easier to do than dogs nails, so it usually doesn't take nearly as long. I would recommend getting actual cat nail clippers as they're a bit less abrasive that the human ones, and suited to actual claws as opposed to fingernails.

I also found that all of my cats (even my cranky-ass 17 year old) love toys with catnip, or honeysuckle in them, most pet stores will sell them in the form of little stuffed animals, or pillows (the pillows are a special favourite as the cats love to hold onto them and kick the crap out of it with their back feet). Also one of my previous cats was basically a cow and loved to eat grass, so you can buy oatgrass in little pots that are safe for kitty consumption.

Also I really, really wouldn't worry about the litterbox. Cats are seriously immensely smart and figure it out very quickly -- especially kittens. I've had three kittens since I was a kid (both male and female) and we've never had any issues with the litterbox and them figuring out how to use it. Just keep it clean, and he'll be a happy camper.

What a cute kitten! Yeah personally I'd say not to even bother buying cat toys, it's a waste of money. Kittens will play with small toy balls (like the bell ones) for a while but it's like after a month or two they could care less. xD Strings of yarn and leftover grocery bags and boxes are all they need, even when they get old and grumpy like mine! Just keep an eye on him though when he's got any sort of string because half the time they try to eat the whole thing.

You don't really have to teach cats how to use litter pans, just let him know where it is and he'll figure it out. He'll probably make a lot of oopsies around your house for a while anyway, just keep an eye on him and try to pick him up and head him to the litter pan asap if he starts to go elsewhere. Speaking of which, if you have any plants, keep them out of his reach because kitties LOVE knocking over plants and then pooping in them.

As for meals, my adult cats eat twice a day (sometimes snacks in between), but kittens will eat up to five or six times a day, just in much smaller portions. As he gets older, make his meals a bit bigger and less frequent. Our older kittens still eat about three times a day.

Congrats on your new tuxedo kitty!

All I can say about kitten care is this:

Don't play fight with them. Don't let them get too comfortable on the ground and under furniture. DO give them things to jump on and claw at. Find a toy or two that they will carry with them. We had a kitten that loved my best stuffed monkey, had a fight about that. Kitten won. >.> Do some research on what cats can and cannot eat. Table scraps are bad for them, but they find a way into them, so might as well keep in mind what foods you should be concerned about if they're ingested.

If you want the kitten to stay out of somewhere, usually telling them no and setting up traps and elaborate jump courses will only end up with you being locked out of that area. And the kitten in that area laugh at you.

And yes, give them a space to run to and feel safe in. Usually cats will go for low, dark spaces. And if a kitten is in a corner, please don't take slippers and swat at it to get out.

I live in a country of ideals. It comes out every Thursday.

He may be the runt now but he may not always be! One time we got a kitten who was the runt of the litter and now he's literally the biggest housecat I've ever seen. Weighs 20 pounds. Just a little warning so you won't be surprised if he gets very large one day. ^_^'

that cat is so cute!! omg i love kittens there's been a lot of really great advice, but i'd like to add that you should think of getting your kitten used to brushing his teeth! it really helps their dental health and you avoid costly surgeries if he gets tooth decay, though it still is important to bring him to dental checkups when he's due. all you need is a tube of special cat toothpaste and a special toothbrush, usually small and round with soft bristles. you can find some instructions for this process here!

also important! make sure he gets wet food in his diet!! dry food has no moisture or water content, and many dry-fed only cats can get really nasty and deadly complications because of it, even if they have a water dish. they just simply don't have a water drive, and normally they'd rely on prey for their water.

What a cutie :D He looks like he'll be a lot of fun.

Some tips to keep in mind: Kittens are curious and like exploring new spaces. They can also fit through surprisingly narrow cracks. Places where they might go but it wouldn't be a good idea for them to get into (the pantry, behind the fridge, under the dishwasher or the stove) make sure you keep doors closed when they're not in use (for closets/pantries/fridge etc) or roll up old grungy towels/clothes that you don't really care about and block off narrow passageways. When you do need to open up the doors, keep an eye out that the kitten doesn't go in! They can be really fast.

When you buy food, make sure you're buying specifically kitten food or kitten and cat food until he's close to ~1-2 years. Don't get fish/seafood flavors, though! It can give kittens diarrhea. Purina tends to be pretty good. For litter (and this is partly personal preference) try not to get anything scented--it might help keep the box odor down but sometimes it can weird the cat out. A better way to keep it from getting too smelly is to scoop the box whenever you notice something in it (it helps to keep a stash of sandwich bags around) and change the whole box about once a week. For toys: You don't really need to buy any! It's super easy to make your own cat toys, from a piece of string to a crumpled up ball of paper to a knotted sock (paper bags, boxes...the list goes on). Ping-pong balls also make excellent kitten toys, especially if you have a wood floor. Don't let the kitten play-fight with your hands, though--if they get in the habit of it when they're young, they'll keep trying to do it when they're older and pointier. It's better for him to play-fight with a knotted up sock (which, depending on the sock, is usually about mouse-size anyways!).

Don't don't don't don't declaw him! It's pretty easy to trim a cat's claws so that the tips don't catch on fabric, especially if you get him used to you handling his paws when he's young. Also providing him with a scratching post (I've noticed that cats tend to like the ~45 degree incline ones, and you can get cardboard ones for not-very-expensive) will keep him from using your couch instead.

If he likes climbing, it's probably a good idea to tuck things like curtains, long dresses, shower curtains, etc. up over whatever they hang from so that he doesn't try to climb them. If you care particularly about your bedspread/chair covers, cover them with old ratty blankets or towels--he's gonna be too small to get up in one jump for a while, so he'll try to hop up and then climb the rest of the way.

If you have any questions feel free to ping/mail me!

Congratulations! Cat post, cat post, cat post. Chip in together and get a big one. He will grow into it and will love it. Put it in front of a window. It builds strength, provides exercise, a napping zone. The antics will be well worth the money, and a good solid one can last you for a long time. My cat is 12 and still flips around on hers.

Scoop the box daily, wash it weekly for optimal pooper box health.

Wet food is a great way to start the day! It injects extra needed protein, moisture, and I find has always helped with hunger. My cat free feeds kibble as she wants it but she mostly eats her wet food and as she has gotten older is nearly all wet food.

Don't use items such as slippers, newspapers, etc. to 'train' him. I also wouldn't advise water. The only thing your little buddy should fear is your disappointment, and it can definitely be enough if trained in early. A firm no, a sharp noise with a firm no to catch attention (clap your hands) if they are doing something wrong. It all has to be caught in the moment though.

Anything you want him to learn, start training now. Be careful clipping his toenails. Have a good light source and never touch the pink. :)
