I suppose it is probably much harder to do than it sounds, but why not have pet profile pages be like our default HA ones are? Some boxes are optional, box order/placement optional, and basic color scheme choices to match your pet! I think people would have a lot of fun adding little things like they do to the default HA profiles.
Maybe include some new box options like if the pet has been a spotlight winner, or rank, or the pet's history -- it was created on this date as an X, but on this date it was changed into a Y, etc… Maybe even battle/achievements?
I know there are templates, overlays, etc… I've used them. I know there are people who will do pet profiles I'm talking about something MUCH more simplistic. Merely like our default HA pages where you can move things around, add or subtract little things, and change the background colors on a whim. I think it could be fun. :)
That's not a bad idea. It could help players that don't know CSS or can't afford a real profile, so they can at least have something to play with and call their own.

That would be very nice. Pet profiles are in need of a major revamp, and if the template used for user profiles was carried over for pet profiles, that would be great.
I think it would make custom-coding a pet profile even easier than what it is now.
It might also encourage users to try and work on their pets, and try to get them PS ready.

Nice idea, but think of all the nice profiles it'd break - including the ones people got with real money, sometimes from people who aren't on the site anymore. I honestly wonder what profile-makers would do then, especially those who take USD and CSC. Shrug their shoulders and say 'Not my problem'? Give people a refund? Re-code every single profile they've ever done?
I like the idea in theory, but only if it wouldn't mess up the existing profiles - plenty of people have put too much time (and potentially sP / CSC / $$s) into pet profiles for them to just be rendered invalid

For anyone that doesn't code things, just an fyi:
Pet profiles are 100% easier to code than user profiles BECAUSE there is none of that mumbo jumbo columns and widgets and shit. It is literally "You don't want this? 'display:none'. You want this? Position it individually."
Plus, implementing this now is going to screw over every person that has a profile based on the current system.
So, no. LOL no.
[edit] Honestly, and I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but the profile market is vastly underpriced. I've seen people offer profiles for 5mil, and pretty much anyone can afford that in two days of questing. Not to mention that there are quite a few of us in the profile/graphic discussion forum that are incredibly helpful with people who have questions. If someone wants to do something as simple as change the background color, that is easy enough for us to help them with. I would much rather answer 100 threads on "how do I change /move this" than have to recode every pet profile I've ever made, as well as spend more time coding them, because seriously, the user profile set-up is a bitch. And it should be banned.
- As long as they're careful (lol Subeta), they should be able to implement something like this without breaking existing profiles, right? Like if they just provided a few basic color schemes, that would be totally harmless.
If they add some new sections, they could maybe append 'display:none' to any non-blank pet descriptions.
Re-arranging sections would be the most difficult thing to implement, and it's been a while since I've worked with CSS so I don't have a good answer for that. But at least the sections are divs and not tables. As long as they keep the existing HTML structure intact (classes, IDs, and all), it should be possible, right?
Maybe instead of complete control over how the sections are ordered (the way that user profiles are), there could be a few preset layout options? And again, these would only be CSS changes.
I agree that CSS isn't too hard to learn, and I'm sure the profile discussion forum is welcoming enough. I'm just kind of intrigued by this whole idea, if only as a problem solving exercise. :P

But... remember when they changed the footer on the whole site and how that affected pet profiles?? I would rather... not... experiment... with the real thing. Because 1) That's how I make money here. and 2) I still like to think of Subeta as a pet site, not an HA site, and I really don't want that last little aspect to the pets to just come crashing down in a fiery blaze.
I mean, this is something that, as is, works perfectly. CSS is sososo easy to learn. It's literally so easy as in you can google what you want to do. I googled how to animate images the other day. It's not hard.
This is a PRIME example of "If it's not broken, then please dear god don't try to fix it." I would rather coding efforts go into things that need severely fixed (sup, beta wardrobe)
For the record, I'm very sure Keith wanted to totally overhaul pet profiles whenever the past recode was to take place (obviously it didn't, and I thank the skies for that).
It looked.... 900% different than it does now, and all sorts of different. As a person with a simple template that I just change the colors on for my legion of pets... I kinda wanted to cry at the very thought of trying to make it work (I'd probably not.. ever touch a profile again, if that was what we got xD). IE: be careful what you wish for.
In hindsight though, I don't think it's actually possible to redo pet profiles in any way/shape/form without making all current profiles unusable. That's what happened way back in the day when we went from one user profile system to the current one. I do imagine if the site ever got overhauled pet profiles would too, though.
No thanks. Pet profiles are easy to code as they are now. If it can be done without screwing up existing profiles, okay, but I can't see such a change being made without breaking everyone's existing CSS.
There are plenty of CSS guides available on the forums, and really helpful people if you get stuck on something. It's easy enough to add a bit of colour or a few images on the current profiles.
- The footer is still a pain. :/ You're right, it's probably better not to risk another revamp. :x

- Jealous. I would have hidden it with CSS by now if I didn't use the links so often. :(

Oh please no. That footer thing screwed with so many profiles and that was just one thing. I can't even imagine the mess my pet profiles would be in after something like this.

I'm also in the everything-we-love-will-break boat when it comes to how it'd mess with existing profiles, but I really do love this idea in theory. Blank pet profiles, as they are now, need a facelift. badly. if there way a way to do this without messing anyone's css up, I'd absolutely support this.
I can see the advantages of this idea, but I do not agree with it. It would be an absolute mess for everybody who bought their profiles, and it would take away business from profile makers. Plus, for people like me who make their own profiles, a blank slate is preferable to having to work within an existing structure because it allows me to be more creative and to worry less about having to move things around. Finally, a redo of the profiles would just mean that everybody who has already learned how to code the pet profiles will have to relearn a different system, and that's a pain in the butt.
I understand that there are people who want pet profiles and who cannot, or do not want to, code. For those people, I would say that there is a readily available pet profile market with lots of talented designers. The profiles are usually fairly cheap as well (certainly cheaper than the "arm-and-leg" price for art). There are even some people give out free templates for very basic profiles, and I know Subetalodge has a couple of free pet profiles as well. Honestly, I think that the relative ease in getting a profile without needing to code makes this suggestion not worth the problems it would bring
A few months ago, Keith talked very briefly about the subject of a pet profile revamp on Tumblr; here is a link to him answering an ask about it.
I.. like the idea of a revamp, in some ways, but I also would feel really bad for all the people who have bought profiles and would have to get them all fixed. I do remember really liking the way profiles were set up on this one other petsite I used to play; they were pretty much just like the user profiles on the site, which were very similar to Subeta user profiles. The pet profiles even had their own comment section, which was great for roleplay purposes, and there were a few possible sections like... best friend (or was it significant other or something..) and enemies I believe? It's all stuff that could be coded into pet profiles here with CSS (minus the comments haha), but it was pretty convenient to have the basic stuff there for you already rather than having to add it all yourself.

Hi, I'm back. Just coming to point out how much of a clusterfuck coding user profiles really is for people who do serious coding since I ran into this bs today:
how the profile looks when you view it
how it looks when you edit it omfg
Notice how all my cover images are shifted down and over 5px in the editing view. I had to keep switching between views to actually get them positioned properly, because there is some weird distortion issue.
Oh, and my column 3 section actually takes up the majority of the page (670x1200px), just so I could put in cover images and the custom navigation. But don't forget you can't apply a z-index to it or none of the other images will show up!
So, not only would changing pet profiles to ^^^ this system ruin all current profiles, it's going to be an actual POS to work with.
[edit] LOL NOT TO MENTION WHEN YOU MESS UP A CODE AND THEN YOU CAN'T FIX IT BECAUSE WOOPS THE EDIT/REMOVE BUTTONS ARE GONE. That reminds me, I need to go up my user profile prices. That is all. Bye.
