Waves I am part of a huge community that educates others in proper rat care, where to get them from, and answer others questions on proper care, what rats can learn, and why I love them so much.
I decided to start a topic here on Subeta to help the education grow.

I think that before I go into the proper care and helping people who have health questions, I'll go into a little history about why I got into rats, and how I became a Rat Rescuer.
My very first rat was Remy. I walked into a pet shop to get a fish tank and some fish for my birthday, and instead walked out with this cute little rat that I named Remy.
I started off wrong on his care. He was alone, he was in a way too small cage, he was on pine bedding, and he was on seed mix. Within a day of doing some online research, I went back and got him a buddy, Ramen. A week later, they were in the proper sized cage, and a week after that, I figured out that pine was bad, and they were switched to a paper based bedding.
Remy died only 5 months later of pneumonia, and Ramen was alone. So instead of going back to the pet store (where I did not like how they treated their small animals) I hopped onto Craigslist and searched for a pair of rats they were needing a new home. This is where I found Xerox and Tribble.
From there, I was addicted. I researched and found a community online that helps rat owners learn and grow. I found a local rat rescue (Exotic Animal Rescue and Pet Sanctuary) that I could help out, and foster for, and I just kept researching, and learning, and wanting to help out others to not make the same mistakes I did in the beginning.
So here we are. A few years later, I am now officially part of EARPS. I do a lot of transports, I foster, I fund raise, and I network for them.
I have 5 personal rats of my own currently, and have lost many other rats to the Rainbow Bridge. I will never not own rats, and I want to help educate others, and learn more still about rats to make sure as many rats as possible get the care and attention they deserve.

Now onto what this page has been started for.
Here are the guides I've written up to help others learn the basic care of pet rats. Please, read over it, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I am always open to answer them. It goes over housing, diet, care, bedding, and other requirements of pet rats.

Here are photos of some of my current rats.

I love rats so much. I've told my parents over and over again how clean they are, but my mom still insists they're dirty and stinky. I told her how they potty in one corner of their cage, at least my friend's did. I just love their cute little faces and their wittle paws and their little bitty earses.
I kept rats for nearly a decade. Like you, I fucked up a bunch with my first rats, so now I try to educate others that have or are thinking about getting rats. Your babies are super adorbs.
Some people are not able to be won over. My mom hated rats until she finally met mine. She's not in love with them, but she will play with them when she comes and visits now. Perhaps do your own research, and actually print up factual sheets on rats, and their care, and their personalities to show your parents how great of a pet they really are.
I love doing animal education. I have been researching proper care on all the different common rodents that can be had as pets, so that I can help others learn how to properly care for their pets. Rats are by far my Heart animal though. I should post a photo of their castle of a home. Its a Triple Critter Nation, 7ft tall, 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep lol
I have 2 rats right now, both girls (Little one and Fatty... I had better names for them... once lol). I've had them for... a little short of a year now, and I'd say they live decently. They have a 3ft x 2'5ft x 1'3ft cage (5'2-ish if you add the height of the storage shelf), and a large empty computer table and the middle shelf of a bookshelf to play on during daytime.
I've been thinking about upgrading to a double critter nation cage for a while, but I'm going to put that on hold until I get a new apartment.
post photos!
I wish I had some but I live in a very dark apartment so it's just never enough light to get decent photos, and I don't want to use flash on animals >/ I'll try and see what I can whip up. They are hooded rats, and they look a little like your Retro :] Black and white with black heads and a black stripe down to the tail, and little one has a white spot on the shoulder-ish area. That was my only way of telling them apart the first months, lmao.
I got them from a pet store when they were a few months old, so they aren't 100% tame and secure on hands. But they seem to like crawling on shoulders and nesting in hair. Generally I don't like pet stores, but they had been there for at least a month and I felt sorry for them >/ Rats are... well most people dislike them, so the pet stores generally don't take them in unless specifically ordered by a customer, so I'm guessing they just were never picked up by the intended owner.
I used to work as a photographer for years, so I have ways of creating light boxes for the ratties. I also have a gallery wall where all my pets, past and present, are featured. So pictures are a must!
I am going to revamp my cage today. I'm taking one of the sections of my Triple Critter Nation down, and turning it into a double. It only houses 5 rats, and cleaning the top section is a major pain. I will post photos when I'm done. ^^
