I just watched the first to episodes, and I have to say- I'm addicted.
I saw the old thread was locked, so I'm making the new one. Yay for Merlin love, bring it all here.
Colin Morgan is adorable. In fact, all the characters are just awesome. I also have a special place in my heart for that dragon.
Whooooo Merlin! Love that show. I watched the whole first season. I desperately want Arthur and Morgana to hook up like right now please. :)
It completely butchers the generally told story but I'm still watching it anyway for some laughs.
different =/= butchering.
It basically does for Arthurian legend what Smallvile does for Superman.
I love the concept and I love Uther. Whoa bb, you can rule over my kingdom any time.
Smallville gives Superman backstory. This show has just completely disregarded the old story while slapping the names of those people from that story onto random characters also while throwing you a wink and asking you to believe it all.
I honestly don't care how much they "butcher" it. It's entertainment so whatever. And I wouldn't say butcher. It's just another take on the legend. This has been done a million times before. Same goes for BBC's Robin Hood. It is HILARIOUSLY inaccurate but I think that's part of its charm.
omg, i looooove merlin. i already watched all the episodes online, but im watching it again now that theyre airing it in canada. its nice to watch shows you like on a big tv as opposed to a tiny low quality thing on your computer c:
and colin morgan is adorable. even my mother kept calling him a "cute boy" throughout the show.
and im glad theyre changing the story line. honestly, i hate when people whine about story changing from books to television. i dont want to see an old ass merlin, and incest. that does not make good television and i probably wouldnt watch if they made it that accurate.
Yeah I might've felt slightly worse if Arthur & Morgana were related and I wanted them to get together lol.
You make it sound like someone recently just cooked up the story when it's pretty darn old and generally remained consistent throughout all of its retellings. No, you're right, It doesn't make good television. Too many people want to see pretty boy characters instead of getting an accurate account that shakes things up. What you want and what the story actually is are completely different things.
lol, accuracy shakes things up? accuracy is the complete opposite of shaking things up. its getting exactly what you expect with no surprises. if you want accuracy, stick to reading the original literature.
tv adaptions =/= accuracy.
what may have been great on paper does not mean it would work on screen. sure it could be accurate, but people would not be watching it. and why would a production company bother spending so much to make a show that wont get good ratings?
theres a HUGE difference between reading a book and watching it on tv. when you read something, you also imagine certain things the way you want them to be. with television, what you see is what you get, and there just isnt as much room for interpretation as there is with literature.
honestly, i cant think of any book-based show on television thats completely accurate without significant creative liberties. sure merlin has extremely significant changes, but really, why would you want to watch something thats a complete carbon copy of a story you already know?
i dont know why people complain so much about these things. whenever i watch something based on a book, i always put all my knowledge about it aside and watch it like its something completely new, because it usually always is, which is what makes it good television.
But the problem is, too many shows aren't accurate. Making it so would be 'shaking things up'. Companies take too many creative liberties and apply it to something preexisting. They're using the name 'Merlin' without it being the Merlin. Instead of trying to throw us that wink again and saying "this is part of King Aurthur's story" they should have made something original. Many companies spend millions of dollars on shows that don't get good ratings. Just look at some of the crap the Sci-Fi channel puts out (namely their movies which they churn out as religiously as a show). Sometimes they take them off and other times they try to milk something that was never good to begin with.
i guess it just depends on what side of the issue youre on, because imo they purposely dont make it accurate to prevent it from being predictable.
and im sure if they just kept melin the way it was, and nixed the whole arthurian references and just went with different names, people would probably be saying its too much of a reference. even with just the whole medieval wizard helping a (potential) king story, people would be comparing it to the real merlin and arthur anyway. they might as well take the real story and play with it instead of always having to convince people "no, it has nothing to do with arthurian legend!". besides, im pretty sure there are a ton of other film adaptions. do we really need another one thats exactly the same?
and i dont really watch sci-fi, so i cant really address that part lol
I just watched the first episode last night and loved it. I'm not amazingly knowledgeable about the actual story, so I think I'll be fine enjoying it for what it is=)
What you seem to forget is that King Arthur is JUST a legend wait.... what I mean is that he may have been real, but we just don't know the show just provides another retelling of a much loved story :) even if it does go again most other of the legends

I love this show to bits. :D It's a bit predictable, but it has its wonderful moments. I have such a silly crush on Lancelot though, even if he appeared in only one episode. The music that played when he was getting measured by Gwen was so pretty - and I want it badly. :[
I'm also enjoying Colin Morgan's role as Merlin, he brings a lot of fresh air into the role. However, am I the only one who thinks that his ears are adorable? XD Someone did a picturespam of them and I just fell in love.
Any relic of the dead is precious, if they were valued living.
I just watched the episode with Lancelot and Arthur. It was pretty interesting, mainly because I have no idea of the actual story yet.
I am just so addicted to this show! It's so funny and exciting and has that cheesy feel to it that makes you laugh. Or at least, to me it does. =) I ❤ it!!
