The cheesy feel (and the humor) also makes me laugh, RenegadeBubble, so you're not alone!
Any relic of the dead is precious, if they were valued living.
What I really want to know, is why hmv's around me only have season 1 part 1 when it finished absolutely yonks ago, and where my season 2 is. Yes that is my ultimate question about Merlin.
I don't like it so much, personally. e-e'; The acting isn't exactly my cup of tea and the show DOES butcher the Arthurian Legend nearly as bad as Disney did, in my opinion. I just don't like all the pretty boys prancing around pretending to be Arthur and his knights, and the plot isn't something I enjoy. -shrugs- So, I don't find it so awesome, but I'm not going to maul people for liking it. My mom and brother are obsessed, though. Every time I'm in the bathroom, minding my own business, they start to yell at me to go watch it with them no matter how many times I say I dislike it. x:
Haha, I was addicted after the first two shows too. It doesn't seem like it should be as intense as I think it is, but then I'm a dork. :B I agree, their dialect and everything is not authentic to Arthurian, but a lot of people would probably get sick of the Old English, and their humor was different back then. As much of a fan of Camelot as I am, I still lovelovelove this show. ❤
I think it will at least be something to watch during the summer, I dont love the show but I do find it intriguing.
And do you know how much different Merlin fiction there is out there. That is just what happens when people are dealing with legends.
Something original would always be nice, but taking a legend and giving it an intriguing idea or angle can also be good.
WAIT - you get it in America? Sucks you get it so late though, I mean, Merlin was AGES ago for us Brits. I'm waiting for the second series now...if there is one. :o (I hope so, I love Colin Morgan :D).
Do you get Robin Hood as well? o.o
I watched a few eps of this show and I thought it was pretty decent. There are a few things they changed from the original legend that bother me a bit. Its not the fact that they changed the story... its just that some things they changed a little too much for my taste.
The whole Smallville thing is neat because you know kind of bits and pieces that happen in the future (according to the show's timeline) so you're constantly trying to kind of piece together how things get to be that way. This is different because all bets are off. Its more fun and dramatic when you can see a little foreshadowing in the storyline. I'm not even a Smallville fan, but I would have liked Merllin more if they stayed a little truer to the more traditional Arthurian legend (of which there are several different versions) just so they could play up the foreshadowing.
Either way the show has value in its own right, I just think staying a little truer to the story and using that as an advantage to the storytelling would have made it an even more amazing show. But then again, this way has its own advantages too. It isn't limited to what has already been told, so its pretty open to whatever they want to do.
I CAME ON HERE TO MAKE THIS THREAD. Guys guys. There's a legal way to watch all the episodes: Hulu.com. So... do we have Merlin girls/Arthur girls yet?
[edit]
Realized that came out as one big fangirlspasm. I know a bit of the old stuff, like that history is incorporated and the dragon is really important and some of the old stories. And I have read books, and I never saw the Disney movie. /halfintellectual
That being said, I agree that incest/old man Merlin/aging backwards would have been pretty dull compared to "Young Merlin/Young Arthur" has been. If you don't like it, I can appreciate that too, but understand where we are coming from too :D
They have a full season already? That's a relief.. none of this nomoreepisodes crap like FIrefly tyvm.
Also a bit contention point on Hulu: the CGI. Parts are lacking, but the Gryffin was really well rendered. It was the sword HITTING the gryffin that blew. And guys? Plot always > CGI. Hello, cultfilms.
One more fangirl: COLIN MORGAN'S EARS FTW.

Why yes, yes we do. On BBC America.
Along with "Being Human", "Torchwood", "Doctor Who", "Top Gear", and "Primeval".
