Early in the spring of 2001 an up-and-coming young actor named Heath Ledger sat in the bar of a NYC hotel, talking to an entertainment reporter for EW.com. He had a new new movie coming out, The Knight's Tale and while talking about it he told the reporter that, "'I'm on a journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''
Sadly, yesterday at the far-too-tender age of 28, Heath Ledger passed away in his New York City apartment, carrying with him a great deal of success in reaching people and touching lives through the honesty and charm of the characters he'd portrayed.
Whether you remember him from his very early days, starring in Roar, or his first big movie, 10 Things I Hate About You,, or perhaps his turn as the iconic Australian Hero Ned Kelly, by the time he delivered his incredible performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, you most likely knew that when you went to a Heath Ledger movie you were in for a performance that would be true, vibrant, and full of life. Nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 26 for his portrayal of a cowboy struggling with his sexuality in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain Hollywood insiders had predicted a long career, full of many triumphs for Heath.
Sadly, that promise will be unfulfilled. We won't get to see him go on to discover new roles, won't get to see what new triumphs would be just around the corner for him. His final role, playing The Joker in the The Dark Knight will be a bittersweet experience for his fans: joy that we can see him do what he did best one more time, deep sadness that this will be the last time his grace and spirit light up the silver screen.
Again we will miss what might have been, and mourn for what was lost.
But what we do have is much more depth and variety than many actors achieve in a full lifetime of Hollywood fame. I think Heath would be proud of what he achieved at the end of the day; I hope so, anyway.
RIP, Heath Ledger 1979-2008

Thank you for posting, Keith. <3 I was really torn up when I heard the news, as Heath was one of my favorite actors. Still is! This piece about him was eloquently written and I"m sure we all needed the kind words and reminder of how much he had accomplished in his short, but full, life.

Thank you, Keith. It was really good of you to post this. I didn't read the whole thing because I have to go to class soon and I can't show up all teary-eyed but I will definitely read it and get the items later.

A little dramatic, don't you think? People die every day of terrible causes that /weren't/ their fault in Africa, Australia, Europe, and every other continent. Where's there memorial?

I really am glad that people care enough about other people to post things like this but really, this wouldn't be here if he hadn't been hot and famous.

Keith... and all of the Subeta staff... this was a really nice gesture and memorial. You're a pet site, but you do what you can to honor a good man in your own way.. and we respect you for that.

I had no idea he was father, that's so horribly tragic. Knight's Tale is one of my favorite movies because of him, no one else would've been as good in that role :/ I know I'll miss his movies.

Wow, some comments here are just messed up. Why the hell would a person feel the need to post on a remembrance news post about an actor that just recently died how "It's sad that there's 'omgz heath ledger is dead' on every corner just because he's a popular actor"? Yes, that IS disrespectful, and it's unwanted.

for the third time now: I said he brought many people joy, so obviously it's not that I don't care, and I did like him, so it's -not- an equivalent of 'who cares'. It's fun to see how people always seem to ignore the positive things you say, but have no fear to throw around words like 'rude, disrespectful, selfish' when you weren't. I do recognize the fact that he came to represent Australia, so kudos to that and a tragedy that he died.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

Please, people need to calm down and think about that they are say. This was a person's life that people aren't thinking about. Please don't say anything negative. This was someone's life. Just take a breather, please.

Sorry, I consider "I can't escape this news" and "Well other people did more good than him and died unnoticed" to be very disrespectful considering you're discussing a dead man at this point.

If you feel that way, it's fine, but you could have just given people this space to mourn someone instead of posting things that are equivalent to "Who cares?"

My thoughts are going out for his daughter, also. It's sad to lose your father so young.

I thought that Brokeback Mountain was his best role, he really carried the movie for me. He was a great man and a fine actor. I now must have all the new items to make a memorial gallery, like for Steve Irwin.

And Childstar and Akjara, you two need to shut up. Your behavior is selfish and rude.

I am extremely touched by what you wrote Keith, it's so beautiful and touching that I had to grab my tissues. I will probably never forget the first time that I watched "10 Things I Hate About You," I knew right away that he was something special. And I found myself watching any movie he was in... and being touched in some way by each of them. In fact, most of them were movies I never would have given a chance, which would have been a shame. I will definitely miss him, and I am touched that he is being honored in Subeta.

"If you don't know Heath Ledger, and/or you don't care that's he dead...Why contribute negatively. He was a young, talented man who's gone too soon. Regardless of whether you feel there should be a news blurb about him there is so be respectful."

And who here exactly 'contributed negatively'? I said he brought many people joy, so obviously it's not that I don't care, I just think that other people who did more deserve a bit more attention and find it sad that there's 'omgz heath ledger is dead' on every corner just because he's a popular actor. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a tragedy too and I liked him, but I fail to see how it's disrespectful.

I've seen a few of his movies: Patriot(can't enough of even though Mel Gibson is in it.), 10 Things(watch again & again), Casanova(loves it) and Brothers Grimm (favorite) and when I heard this I first thought it was a tribute because of the Dark Knight coming out soon. I looked it up though and soon discovered that my favorite actor (sides Orlando Bloom^.^) is dead. I am having a hard time getting over it and keep repeating 'I can't believe he's dead' like a mantra. I had sincerely hoped it was a publicity stunt as early promo for D.K. this memorial has touched my heart and made me almost cry.tearyeyes Thank you SubetaTeam. goes off to think about it and cry a while
