Early in the spring of 2001 an up-and-coming young actor named Heath Ledger sat in the bar of a NYC hotel, talking to an entertainment reporter for EW.com. He had a new new movie coming out, The Knight's Tale and while talking about it he told the reporter that, "'I'm on a journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''
Sadly, yesterday at the far-too-tender age of 28, Heath Ledger passed away in his New York City apartment, carrying with him a great deal of success in reaching people and touching lives through the honesty and charm of the characters he'd portrayed.
Whether you remember him from his very early days, starring in Roar, or his first big movie, 10 Things I Hate About You,, or perhaps his turn as the iconic Australian Hero Ned Kelly, by the time he delivered his incredible performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, you most likely knew that when you went to a Heath Ledger movie you were in for a performance that would be true, vibrant, and full of life. Nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 26 for his portrayal of a cowboy struggling with his sexuality in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain Hollywood insiders had predicted a long career, full of many triumphs for Heath.
Sadly, that promise will be unfulfilled. We won't get to see him go on to discover new roles, won't get to see what new triumphs would be just around the corner for him. His final role, playing The Joker in the The Dark Knight will be a bittersweet experience for his fans: joy that we can see him do what he did best one more time, deep sadness that this will be the last time his grace and spirit light up the silver screen.
Again we will miss what might have been, and mourn for what was lost.
But what we do have is much more depth and variety than many actors achieve in a full lifetime of Hollywood fame. I think Heath would be proud of what he achieved at the end of the day; I hope so, anyway.
RIP, Heath Ledger 1979-2008

Speaking as someone with experience, regarding Ambien: It is KNOWN that you can take it, partially wake again, and believe you 'need' to do something, such as take a medication, drive to work, etc. My husband had the same thing happen as long ago as 10 1/2 years. I truly believe that Heath had taken Ambien, came partially awake, and unintentionally took other medications. Ambien will NOT kill someone, however with some of his other prescriptions, it could have mixed badly. There is nothing indicating anything more than this was a very tragic accident, esp since no pills were taken in such amount to imply a suicide attempt.

Thank you for this thread Kieth. As a very proud Australian i was shocked and saddened to hear of the death of such a young, talented and unaffected Aussie star. We in Australia may not be as patriotic as our American neighbors but love our people fiercely and Heath was a proud Aussie who represented our country and our actors in a down to earth way. He will be very much missed by all in Australia and our heart breaks for his daughter and his family. It truly is a waste of a very talented life. I believe and have always believed Heath would have gone on to be one of the most celebrated actors ever.
We will miss you Heath.

childstar - he's an actor who played, amongst other things, a nobody who believed that being a knight had nothing to do with accident of birth but with one's actions and intent....that a person could indeed change their stars.

and he's one of the few people in the industry that no one - not his directors, his agent, his costars, his ex girlfriends, or his high school mates - had a bad thing to say about.

but you might want to look around you, and take note:

because I think the greatest tribute to him is how widespread the grief is, and how much mindless blather suddenly fell silent this week - the legal team isn't talking about money and power, the secretary pool isn't talking about American Idol, the waitresses aren't talking about the cooks or the customers...all around you, people are talking about this one guy like he meant something to them.

It's nice to see that so many people are able to see past Heath's fame and the media's usual over-the-top grab for headlines and just see the sad passing of a young father and son.

Keith can you please not retire the Heath items too fast - I'm stuck on dial-up and I have no chance of RSing them for a couple of weeks (I understand if you need the space or something of course - I know nothing about running web sites!).

Not seen any of the movies he was in to be honest, only one really heard of in the UK was brokeback mountain, and that isnt my sort of movie.

He looked cool as The Joker in The Dark Knight, not a big batman fan or anything but was definitely going to see it and decide who was better between Heath and Jack as the joker

Aww well thats nice from the staff, but sadly I don't care much as I've never heard of him before he died..."

thumbs up Thats the attitude, when someone dies and leaves a 2 year old daughter without a father, a family and friends behind, the i dont give a crap because i didnt know him attitude is the way to go, you should try warming your heart up a little, if you can find it.

Thanks for the tribute Keith – it is sad for us Australians to lose one of our sons in such a sad and pointless way – whether he was famous or not. A young girl has lost her father and a loving family has lost a son in the prime of his life. I don’t know how or why he died but whatever the reason it is a terrible waste of a human life. If you liked Heath or not or even if you have never heard of him – this fact alone should give you reason to pause and think about what is important in your life. Heath’s being famous has nothing to do with the fact that his death is a terrible waste of a life and painful loss to the people who loved him. His family have left for the US to bring is body home and I hope that the media will leave them alone so that they can bury their boy in peace in the red soil under the Southern Cross.
Tomorrow is Australia Day and hopefully there will be some acknowledgement of Heath’s success as an actor and as a man in our official ceremonies.

R.I.P Mate.

Btw – people who post here with negative comments are showing disrespect to Keith and to others who feel Heath’s loss for one reason or another – even just as one human being to another. Star a board in the forums if you want to discuss the media/fame/actors.

Rest in Peace Heath.

I have loved his movies since I was young. Not for his face, but for his skill. I always adored the way that, when he was in a role, he seemed more 'real' then other actors. I will have to have a 'Heath Ledger Day' and just sit in my room, and watch all the movies he was in. Which means I need to rent Brothers Grimm again.

To those who are complaining about how Subeta should not interfere with real life, or his 'overdosing', which was ruled accidental, and Subeta 'Pushing their homosexual views' on others?
Keep your traps shut. This is a memorial. The fact that you will comment in such a way on a memorial sickens and appalls me.

Thank you Keith for such an amazing, articulate and heartfelt tribute. I am honestly devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of such an honest, talented, beautiful (inside and out) man. I am moved that you saw fit to make a Subeta tribute to him, just as you did for Steve Irwin (RIP). I hope that in the future, should another iconic figure pass, you will have a tribute to them as well. Subeta IS a place to escape reality to a degree, but it is still an online community and it promotes a healthy unity between members to be joined over such a loss. Thank you. I will stop babbling now.

Rest in peace, Mr. Ledger.

Thank you, Subeta, for supplying yet another tribute to someone who truly deserved it. (Way to be the one who made me cry over this, Keith, you jerkface.)

It's equally as sad and touching as the Steve Irwin minions.

And for those of you so selfishly demanding 'why here' and 'we get enough of this in the real world', just... Stop. Just stop.
Even more disgusting is the comments that 'he killed himself' and 'the site shoving it's homosexuality tolerant policy down our throat'. Obviously, the writer was very -moved- by Brokeback Mountain, and this has nothing to do with the site's policy on anything. Go back to Neopets if you don't like it, please, and spare the rest of us your righteous drama.

The police ruled Mr. Ledger's death -accidental-. He didn't kill himself. From what I hear, he was not the type, and it is -very- easy to take the wrong number of pills. I've seen it happen. Done it myself a number of times, but never enough to od on.

Respectfully, I'm asking you to drop it, just for a few days, and let those of us who cared mourn.

I found this very nice.
I wasn't really thinking about this at first, because I'd honestly never heard of him (I don't get out much), but this was actually kind of touching.

I did see some nice things about him on the news, I believe one station said "He was an actor who could easily have gotten by with his looks, but decided to use his acting instead" It's not an exact quote at all, and they added more, but that was one thing interesting about him.

Well, he died too soon from what I understand.
Hopefully his legacy will never die.

For the people who seem to resent Heath being honoured here on Subeta, and feel that his death is no more important than others who have died before or since:

I have experienced loss on a very personal level recently, but I can still appreciate the fact that this man touched people's lives. Maybe he didn't cure cancer, but he brought people together and touched their soul with his talent...and living in a world where quite a few celebrities care not for anyone but themselves and live the flamboyant lifestyles that they do, Heath was a breath of fresh air and will be missed.
