Early in the spring of 2001 an up-and-coming young actor named Heath Ledger sat in the bar of a NYC hotel, talking to an entertainment reporter for EW.com. He had a new new movie coming out, The Knight's Tale and while talking about it he told the reporter that, "'I'm on a journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''
Sadly, yesterday at the far-too-tender age of 28, Heath Ledger passed away in his New York City apartment, carrying with him a great deal of success in reaching people and touching lives through the honesty and charm of the characters he'd portrayed.
Whether you remember him from his very early days, starring in Roar, or his first big movie, 10 Things I Hate About You,, or perhaps his turn as the iconic Australian Hero Ned Kelly, by the time he delivered his incredible performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, you most likely knew that when you went to a Heath Ledger movie you were in for a performance that would be true, vibrant, and full of life. Nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 26 for his portrayal of a cowboy struggling with his sexuality in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain Hollywood insiders had predicted a long career, full of many triumphs for Heath.
Sadly, that promise will be unfulfilled. We won't get to see him go on to discover new roles, won't get to see what new triumphs would be just around the corner for him. His final role, playing The Joker in the The Dark Knight will be a bittersweet experience for his fans: joy that we can see him do what he did best one more time, deep sadness that this will be the last time his grace and spirit light up the silver screen.
Again we will miss what might have been, and mourn for what was lost.
But what we do have is much more depth and variety than many actors achieve in a full lifetime of Hollywood fame. I think Heath would be proud of what he achieved at the end of the day; I hope so, anyway.
RIP, Heath Ledger 1979-2008

I've only heard of Brokeback Mountain, and that was just because some of it was filmed in my home town, I've been wanting to see it though, a few people from my school were in it as extras I think, I know my sister wanted to be in it.

I'm sad that the knights tale gift didn't stay out for longer, I missed it, but it was a very nice sentiment for those of us that will truly miss Heath. He was much more than 'just an actor' and has left a gap in many lives, especially in his family, that will never be filled by anyone else.

Had someone asked me a few years before who Heath Ledger was I would have answered that he was an actor who type of movies I didn't particulary enjoy. But I would have known him I would have known who he was and still would have though that it was a shame to die so young.

That changed with his phantastic work in Brokeback Mountain. I realised that this actor hab a lot more potential that the movies he had so far done. I was happy that he got a role in the new Batman because I really thought that he had the abilities to play the Joker. I would also have looked forward to others movies that he unfortunatly now longer will play.

I do not get people that come here to state that they are not interessted or do not care. Would the actor have been an actor that I would not have cared about I would not have answered at all. I would have left the comments to those people that did care and that want to voice what is on their mind.

I'm surprised there are still negative comments happening. Lets forget that Heath was an actor, famous, handsome - these things aren't important in the big scheme of things. Let's remember that he was a young man, a son, a father, a brother. Let's remember that he was loved by his family, that he was apparently kind and loyal, honest - human. And then let's remember that at only 28 he died, alone, in a city of millions of people, when he had, to all appearances, everything to live for. His death is not more or less tragic than any other but for his own reasons Keith has obviously felt the loss on a personal level. As the users of his site we need to respect that - and I don't see why it's difficult.
A young man died and another young man who didnt even know him took the time to say "I'm sorry, what a terrible loss to the movie industry and his fans and most especially his family"
If you can't empathize with Heath's family, if you can't sympathize with his fans, if you can't respect the site's owner and his right to post what is important to him - then don't post anything - we respect your opinions and your right to NOT express them.

btw - Happy Australia Day to my fellow Aussies

The Steve Irwin memorial minions were only fairly recently retired, one being Isuik--a black dog with a halo, for his dog that was in his shows for so long. There were five if I recall correctly, all critters with halos. Crunter, Guona, Remembrance (description "We will never forget."), Truu were the others.

This is just a suggestion - and I know theres a suggestion board but all i get is url not found so I will post it here. Maybe some time in the future a place could be added say to Sacred Lands where maybe people could go and post a tribute someone they like so much. Like a memorial Shrine. As I said its just an idea.

The last film Heath Ledger was working on, as it was mentioned earlier is The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and its suspended indefinitely according to the wikipedia.

So don't think they will do like they did with the Crow. Weird though, that whole situation reminded me of this one. Just because they were so young and such unexpected passings.

Heath has been a long time favorite of mine and I've collected his movies mostly because I could never get enough. When I saw Brokeback Mountain, I cried not so much for the characters in the movie but for all of those who have fallen in love at one time or another with someone and felt the need to hide it or be ashamed. How sad that life still needs to be this way. Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger risked much by doing this movie and again how sad that society still reacts negatively after all this time.
Anyway, Rest in Peace Heath Ledger and may God be with your family in their time of this great loss.

It was that same weird feeling of disbelief, even though I really wasn't familiar with him. He did Die so young, and that's what really gets me I think.

Everwynter...there were several minions released in Steve Irwin's honor after his death, so yes, the staff did "bother to release them". Also, you may have seen Heath as "just an actor" but apparently Keith and many of us here saw him as much more. "Only an actor" or "Just an actor" doesn't really make sense to me though as I am from the generation of Kurt Cobain who by your definitions was "just a singer". I still vividly remember when he died that my entire school was in shock for days. People were crying in the halls and the classrooms, posting tributes to him on their lockers, wearing T-shirts with his face. Certain people move millions of other people in an undefinable way through their art. When my 10 year old son was really down about school recently I had him watch A Knights Tale and then talked to him about how he could always "change his stars" if he believed in himself enough to do it. Now when he gets down all I have to say is "change your stars by changing your attitude" and he totally gets what I am saying. Heath touched his life through that movie in a positive way. So to sum up...he may have been nothing more than an actor to you(and many others who have posted negative comments here) but to me, my son, my husband and millions of others he was more than that...so how about you(and all the other negative people) just leave us be and let us grieve.Oh, and by us I include Keith in that, so how about ya'll stop bashing him for showing that he cared about Heath with this tribute and the items.

...why is it, exactly, that Heath would be remembered by lengthy news post and an assortment of items, when all he was, as blunt as this may sound, was an actor?
sure, he played a few good roles, (...brokeback exempt, that is. rofl.) but otherwise, he never changed this world.
i just find it kind of perverted that Keith would make such a tribute to his death, when someone like Steve Irwin who actually did something for the Earth- and it's inhabitants- got nothing more than forum posts and a items that none of the staff even BOTHERED to release.

i don't know. it's a nice gesture, but it's horribly biased.

At least one person dies every single day. Some are remembered, mourned and missed others discarded and forgotten. But for each persons death is another person reborn. It's very possible that heaths death was caused just to make room for someone even more grand. He was an extremely talented actor. According to what I've read he had alot of actual friends and thousands of fans. But just because keith chose to make a tribute about heath and not other famous people doesn't make them less important. Its very possible and probable that keith was a huge fan of heaths. Whenever someone famous dies there is ALWAYS a big to do about it on the news. Thats when people have the choice to grieve or dismiss it. It doesn't make any of the other famous people any less loved.

WOW. Some of you make me sick. Stop complaining about everybody not getting a memorial. If you care about someone enough to write a memorial about them on your journal or profile or something then you have every right to do that as long as you don't break the rules. And if you did would you want snotty people posting comments dissing the person you cared about? No. So if you have a problem with it the good thing is nobody is forcing you to remember Heath. You can go make all the tributes you want to the people you care about and I promise I'd never react to your tribute the way you have to this one. Even if you don't care about him show some respect for those who do. As for the "Homosexual Agenda"? You really picked the wrong site to try to spread your bigotry and hate. I only know of the items that are dedicated to Steve Irwin, for instance, and I think that is already a nice gesture. Maybe back then no one thought of doing this sort of memorial for him. So what, we pick our flaming torches and mob Keith for an original and beautiful gesture? Come on all you haters. I am very disgusted at the comments made on here and if I were the OWNER OF THIS SITE, I would freeze every last one of you and you wouldnt play on my site being the OWNER OF THE SITE and can pretty much do what I damn well pleased, if I were the OWNER OF THIS SITE. This is my one last comment to this and then I am going to shut my mouth. Did Steve Irwin get such a loving tribute? Was he not also an ambassador to Australia? Did we get such an open place to mourn for a man loved and revered by millions world wide? No he only was remembered by items and forum posts. As a matter of fact, the items made in tribute to his passing weren't even released last year. They sit in the dusty memory of subeta database. THAT is my point. Was Steve not just as worthy of such a tribute? What makes one man worthy of such praise and others not? Did you all cry for Anna Nicole Smith's little baby? No. My point was, this is not the proper venue for these types of things. Take it to the forums like when Steve passed away. Was his death any less tragic? If this was a post for someone many loved and and could relate to, then why was Steve's passing not made such a big todo about? My heart goes out to his family, JUST as it did with Steve's passing. But to pay tribute to one person over another is just not right and should have been done differently. That's all I'm saying.

Some of you sicken me, you're heartless.

You complain about everything you can comment on, some of you. If you don't know who he is and don't care; it's simple.. Here's the life saving answer:::

DON'T COMMENT ON IT.
DON'T be so disrespectful for what you have no knowledge of.
and please, just save us the time.

Can't you see we're just mourning our lost Australian? He's a dear loss to this world, he gave many of us something we shall carry in thought and memory until the day we die.
He died all too early, many of his fans are in shock.

Yet here are the people that feel the need to contribute so negatively. You amaze me with your selfish comments.

It's just another news post, if it doesn't concern you it's certainly not hurting anyone to just ignore it. Actually it saves people time.

If you don't care for the person don't even try caring about the fans. It makes you look pathetic, attention seeking. If you're looking to argue bring it to neopets, the idiots over there have nothing better to do either.

Have the people who are being so flippant about the pills never been ill themselves? Have they never had the flu and felt so groggy that they'd fall out of bed if they even had the energy to move to begin with? Seriously... The medicine you then have to take adds to that grogginess, and you become as lost and confused as anything.

Obviously, they've never had insomnia either. I once had it for five days and nights running, and it was one of the worse periods of my life. It became that I didn't risk leaving the room, upon my mother's orders because I was such a danger to myself!

Furthermore, whoever is saying we shouldn't do this memorial in case Heath Ledger committed suicide should be slapped into awareness. Do you have any idea at all what kind of sadness it takes for a person to get to the point where they take their life? You have to be so depressed, your life so bleak ... that you just stop knowing what to do, and you take that leap. At times, it's just a really really bad time that seizes you out of nowhere! I know of people who had a very good life (at least on the surface), and then all of a sudden they go and do this.

I wish I could just ask the staff here to delete such insensitive comments but alas, being tolerant means you have to respect the right to expression even of those who abuse of it and sully the memory of a person who died under such sad circumstances.

But then I also wonder if they were near completion of the movie. Because if it was near completion, maybe they could do something in it like they did for The Crow when Brandon Lee died. I think some people are so affecting by Heath's passing because he was the actor of OUR generation. Yes, other older actors have passed away, but Heath's made such an impact because of how young and talented he was, plus the fact that we could relate to him somehow because we are from more or less, the same generation.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

This was beautiful. Unfortunately some of the comments were not. A loss of life is tragic whether a person is famous or not. The lack of compassion i've observed from people on the internet (not just here!) for their fellow man just... boggles me on so many levels. Really, it's disgusting.

To those out there who dispute the man's life because of a role that he played in a film... equally disgusting. I hope that I am not the only one who could see beyond the "homosexuality" in Brokeback Mountain and realize that it wasn't really what the film was about. It was a tragedy, it was a love story, it was about two human beings that were -in love- but lived in a society that kept them apart. It wouldn't have mattered if they were both men, both women, or a man and a woman, because that's what the film was about.

I'd also like to point out that so far results on the cause of his death are inconclusive. Any report is merely speculation, which is, in fact, something that his family specifically requested people not do. From what I have heard, he was sleeping ~2 hours a night and anybody who has ever lost so much sleep will know how it can make a person feel. If he was sick, it's likely that his body just simply wore out. But, i'm not going to speculate. It doesn't really matter. He's dead, I respected him and still do, as a human being.

Long winded as that was, Rest In Peace.

Ok, this post, in NO way, is meant to be diminish this tribute in ANY way. But, correct me if I am wrong, weren't there a number of great actors, actresses and other great people who passed away within the last couple years? It seems to me if you are going to pay tribute to great people who have passed, pay tribute to them all or none. Didn't one of this country's great First Ladies pass away last year? Lady Bird Johnson received two of this country's greatest honors! But nothing was mentioned of her passing. Yes, it's sad to see someone die at such a young age because of an overdose, whether intentional or not. But if you really want to pay tribute to this passing, at least post help sites for people with prescription drug abuse problems. Because that seems to be a HUGE problem.
