Early in the spring of 2001 an up-and-coming young actor named Heath Ledger sat in the bar of a NYC hotel, talking to an entertainment reporter for EW.com. He had a new new movie coming out, The Knight's Tale and while talking about it he told the reporter that, "'I'm on a journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''
Sadly, yesterday at the far-too-tender age of 28, Heath Ledger passed away in his New York City apartment, carrying with him a great deal of success in reaching people and touching lives through the honesty and charm of the characters he'd portrayed.
Whether you remember him from his very early days, starring in Roar, or his first big movie, 10 Things I Hate About You,, or perhaps his turn as the iconic Australian Hero Ned Kelly, by the time he delivered his incredible performance as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, you most likely knew that when you went to a Heath Ledger movie you were in for a performance that would be true, vibrant, and full of life. Nominated for an Oscar at the tender age of 26 for his portrayal of a cowboy struggling with his sexuality in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain Hollywood insiders had predicted a long career, full of many triumphs for Heath.
Sadly, that promise will be unfulfilled. We won't get to see him go on to discover new roles, won't get to see what new triumphs would be just around the corner for him. His final role, playing The Joker in the The Dark Knight will be a bittersweet experience for his fans: joy that we can see him do what he did best one more time, deep sadness that this will be the last time his grace and spirit light up the silver screen.
Again we will miss what might have been, and mourn for what was lost.
But what we do have is much more depth and variety than many actors achieve in a full lifetime of Hollywood fame. I think Heath would be proud of what he achieved at the end of the day; I hope so, anyway.
RIP, Heath Ledger 1979-2008

Thank you so much for acknowledging Heath's death. It means a lot to his fans, also to the gay community. Though he was a straight man, he has become a sort of icon with his roles he has dared to take as a homosexual. Many straight And gay men will not do this, I believe he allowed himself to be open and vulnerable in a world that can be harsh.

It is always a tragedy when someone so young passes. We were allowed a glimpse into this amazing actors career and many of us saw a touch of the human he was underneath through his films and interviews.

I grieve for his family first. For the loss of life, and for what we will never see and know because of his untimely death.

At least I got to grow up with my father.

I have felt heartsick for days about this - and I only now allowed myself to shed a few tears. I haven't felt this way since Princess Diana died, and before that River Phoenix. Certain people just sneak into your heart and you don't even realize it.

okay why is it KEITH got/understood my comment want bashing, but a statement!.. I said I cant get away from this story in the news.. I cant.. I dont like that first thing I heard on the news was how sleeping pills we're found near this person whom I dont really know of.. big deal again, do I have to know who he is to make him count, I think not!
I myself have sleeping pills in my bedroom..gasp I hope I dont die in bed with them near me.. I dont like hearing over and over he died of a drug OD.. the press needs to knock it off! What do they know..
Okay and my cousin happened to die this summer from the same prescribed drugs that they found with Heath.. my cousins wife just had a baby.. he came home drunk and on the drugs.. and hit his head and died..she found him in the morning.. I personally blame my cousin.. he chose his actions.
By my comment.. I was saying this
WOW WEE!!! I AM SO DANG OLD AND OUT OF THE LOOP I didnt know he was SO famous... WOW WEE I cant get away from this SAD SAD story ANYWHERE!!! WOW WEE.. how did I become so not COOL ANYMORE, and not know whos hot and who isnt..!!
Leave me out of the poke Anji/childstar is so heartless and RUDE.. toss me into the WOW, I hope I dont become OLD and UNHIP and not know famous people as her pile okay..

xalphaxinfidelx, there's memorials for people every day who die. Heath just has more people mourning for him because he was famous. Nobody said they don't care about the other people in the world who die, so stop acting like we did.

Two more random thoughts:

I have never heard of Ned Kelly. How did I miss that one??

An easy way to think about what you are going to say here is this. Well first you have to THINK about what you are going to say here. Then; keep your comments to what you would say at a memorial service or funeral. Whether you care or not, some people do so respect that.

December 31, 1969, 7:00 pm by Deleted User

For the people that are being disrespectful...

Honestly, what you're doing now is almost like walking in on someone's funeral and pointing out everything that they did not do in their lifetime. Does someone have to be a world-wide successful doctor, scientist, or overall genius to be important to the world?
No. Heath Ledger was an amazing actor and many people looked up to him not only as that, but as a person, too.

Because that's what he was. He was a PERSON.
You people disgust me. Why can't you respect someone's death rather than rant all over them simply because Subeta does not do memorials for everyone off the block?

I'm almost as angry as when I went to my friends' Dad's funeral, and the man there spoke about replacement fathers and other people dying.
It makes me very, very upset to see how people act on here.

Thank you, Keith.

How sweet of you. He must have meant a lot to you.

I'm reading Terri Irwin's book about the life of Steve Irwin, the Croc Hunter. It's heartbreaking and funny at the same time. Altho I am getting close to the end and am afraid it will be like his death all over again. He was truly a real life hero of mine. (Don't know why I felt the need to share that....)

To the naysayers out there - How dare you? I learned many years ago that people grieve very differently and while I may not understand why, it is NOT my place to question it. It is never another persons place to criticize someone else's grief. You WILL be there one day; when someone doesn't understand or care why you are so upset. Be thankful you aren't there now.

Take away the fact he was famous, he was still a human being, and with a family who is at this very moment mourning and will do so for the rest of their lives!
Even though they will never see this tribute, you who seems to genuinely hate this for the wrong reasons, you wouldn't dare say these things straight to the familys face as someone has done here.

Have some taste for your own sake, you yourself will surely meet someone who has lost someone dear to them, and to trivialize it is one of the worst things you can do, speaking as someone who has experienced just this. Yes, many die everyday unfairly, to early, without getting noticed, but those who are close to them, it means the world. Even though someone gets more attention then others, THAT doesn't mean that person death deserves to be trivialized.

There are a time and a place for these kinds of opinions, this is not it. Look up empathy in the Dictionary and take use that skill.

Why do people keep trying to take away from what's supposed to be a simple, heartfelt memorial? It boggles the mind.

I think this was a very sweet gesture.
