I'm going to cast a little shade: if hadn't been able to pull up the post from May of this year, I still would be baffled with what was going on because of the lack of any communication. (Going into my 3rd week of having Covid doesn't help, I'm definitely not firing on all cylinders.)
I shouldn't have had to make a topic about it, with a collective outcry of wondering what was going on, to get a "Hey, this thing has officially kicked off."
I know you're not done yet but is there a particular reason why... say Human avatars is currently with the announcements and such? I understand subforums and such disappearing and maybe a forum to shift over a bit if something ahead of it get deleted, but I don't understand the why some of the forums moved so much.
This mostly me wanting Announcements back on the left hand side, I'll admit.
Completely agree. I expected it to be done in a fell swoop and to announce it afterwards, that didn't happen and I've been keeping track of how long it will take. It's always an exercise in judgement and I made the wrong call this time.
It's not currently completed, and portions of the code for re-ordering the forums relies on the actual merging and movement to be completed.

<li><strong>live threads</strong>: think of these as chat rooms, where posts appear automatically, and you can see who’s online and typing in real-time. it’s still a forum (posts are searchable and saved), but you can toggle between “live” and “classic” modes. if you didn’t catch the recent Q&A thread, there’ll be more opportunities to try this feature soon!
I can see the point in streamlining if it helps where some subforums are inactive, but to me, the pets forum (to use that as an example) is just a total mess. Previously if I wanted to search for a Legacy named pet UFA, or maybe see if I had a pet with a date that someone was after, I could just check the subforum, read the couple of new threads to see what's available / what people are after, then walk away. Now, I have to climb through all the other pet-related threads which just makes it too 'messy' for my head to be able to handle.
(since non-unique names were introduced, the adoption subforum has naturally got quieter, as there's more scope to make great names without the need for adopting one, so it ends up being more limited to Legacy names, certain dates, or occasionally a search for certain stats)
So yeah, I guess I'll be even less active on the forums then, as I don't see my brain being able to handle the threads being combined.

that would definitely entice me to post more rather just lurk and read like i have over the last 10 years or so haha (though tbh i was more of a shoutbox user even when i was more active with the social aspects of the site)
i always loved that subeta still has a forum feature especially when some other games i play have just killed theirs in favor of discord :(

With the new forums, are we gonna be able to have more sticky. Paddy got a point with pet adoption - if pet adoption was a sticky, it could work out well, but I think we're limited on how many stickies a forum can have, right?
That is a design challenge I'm working through today 🎉 I'd love for there to be more stickies, but not have it be scrolling through 20 stickied topics before making it to what you're going for.
so what i'm trying today is a kind of reddit style, where each forum has a sidebar on the right with a description, and links out to important threads like stickies but with context.

That makes sense to me because I'm a redditor, so I'm hoping it's not too arid for newcomers. But I feel like it's a very good system and would work better than what we have now, agreed.
<p>first off: the forums as they stand just aren’t very active. in some cases, the sections we’re merging haven’t seen a post in weeks and get fewer than 100 posts <em>a year.</em> that’s a clear signal we need to streamline things. this shift will happen over the next few days (merging forums with millions of posts isn’t exactly speedy!), but here’s why it’s worth the effort:</p>

<p><strong>creating more active, user-friendly forums</strong>: i’ve heard from a lot of newer users (signed up in the last two years, <100 forum posts), and their feedback was pretty consistent: the forums are overwhelming. too many options, no clear path, and not enough context for where to go. many users told me they clicked in once, closed the page, and never returned—except for events. that’s a problem. by consolidating things, we’re aiming to make the forums simpler, livelier, and easier to navigate, even for folks without years of forum muscle memory.</p>

<p><strong>introducing better tools</strong>:</p>

I never get to read any updates you post or Q&As because forums on Kumos, actually Kumos in its entirety, do not work for me. Im mobile 95% of the time with a very busy life, I cant sit behind a computer for hours unless im studying (and even then im multitasking on my phone/ipad/responsibilities). I don't like the idea of live forums. Discord is pretty chaotic and i rarely check it and miss everything that is said from the last time that i checked it. I used to use sb way back when but im an older player now and no longer "cliche" with most users. I may stop using forums if so and may quit entirely if the site moves to Kumos only. 🤷♀️

The site is moving to kumos only -- it's inevitable and is going to happen.
here is a great thread for kumos layout feedback that I've been pulling from and trying to make the site more mobile friendly. Earlier this week I pushed out a major update that should make the navigation significantly easier on mobile and am taking feedback / suggestions to keep moving in the right direction.
I don't want you to throw up your hands and feel like you've got to leave, but we need to move over to a more modern architecture. subeta won't exist if we don't -- it's a matter of the site falling out of being able to get things like security updates.

i just told oreo to remind me next time i try to use it to ss what i see. Everything is squished to the right, i cant scroll, and its just a plain background that says Welcome Orgasmic. No tabs, no options. I cant see any of the site updates you tag on the forums. If I cant use it, then i cant play. 🤷♀️

Keith, truthfully I am very concerned about so many forums being merged with General. It’s virtually all spam threads there now and it’s going to be impossible to find anything 😦
Bear with us. There is a lot more going on than just merging, and further organization is underway, along with lots of cleanup by our hard-working forum staff.
