Yes, I think Neopets played a part in it when I consider the popularity of 'sparkle dogs' and just animal OCs in general on oekakis. And I do agree with the age/generation theory.

It is a shame that they didn't catch on! Like herbal said, it probably has to do with the susceptibility to crash. :/ But that begs the question, why hasn't there been a more reliable version created?? An art program with a community. Why has this gone out of fashion? Especially in this social era! It really baffles me. I assume it has to do with java and programming, since I don't really know much about that aspect of it...

I also used SSO/SRON, but mostly the sketch oekaki.

omfg SPARKLE DOGS. and the fursona community. i probably dropped of after the programs started crashing more often. surprising that they never updated the programs to become better? but that probably discouraged artists idk i think the fact that it also costs money to actually host an oekaki and for the bandwidth and stuff like that was also a reason that they eventually were closed/shut down there was also NAO... and TDO (ticklish designs oekaki)... but i forget what the initials stood for? i agree Deviantart is such a big place and i suppose you can find smaller art communities that draw in similar styles but i just miss the small supportive community feel of the oekakis

I don't even know where to start... I will say this, I've been on here for 10 years (what the heck when did that happen??!) now but have been pretty much inactive for about 2, almost 3 years and just recently I started coming on to this website again and I feel like I've missed so much! I almost had a panic attack when I couldn't find Marena, thinking that my secret map had been revoked or something lol!

I remember when revealing what was in the Blue Building got your account frozen.

I also remember an experimental Saggitarius revamp where the more expensive the quest items were, the higher the payouts. People were spending millions and receiving a fortune in prizes and the resulting inflation was horrendous. (Well, not if you were a shopkeeper who enjoyed restocking. :) )

I still miss the Graveyard shop.

the oekaki board was my favorite part of the site way back then!!!! and i miss 500 csc being 8m at most, i miss stocks and interest. restock wars were my favorite events!

restocking used to be my thing i was so quick at typing prices!

edit: also omg the old layout? and the sb showing gold backgrounds for gold accounts and staff had unique backgrounds?

I remember when the lily and liam lace items were like the ultimate status symbol items you could have on an avatar, or when avatars in general had just come out and there weren't nearly as many items for them as there are now so there would be like one or two fad items that would become super expensive because literally everyone needed them.

Oh man or when you could only have one item per layer? And now we can have like, 30 face items going at once if you really want. Everything is so much more diverse and I feel like they've finally hit like, peak item saturation because I haven't seen the same avatar twice since I came back to the site.

Well, there are nearly 30,000 official wearable items, and almost as many CWs. That's enough wearable items between the two sources to make it pretty unlikely that any two users will make the exact same avatar or outfit (unless they do it on purpose).

I also think people tend to change their HAs more frequently now, because there are so many items to choose from.

True that, though now I have the opposite problem of "how do I search for new items I want there are so many and none of them have intuitive names" but that's honestly not a terrible problem to have.

Yeah, it's fun to look through items I don't have sometimes, although a lot of the good ones are expensive.

I think that's also why the color search function in the wardrobe (once it works again) is so helpful, because you can find matching items. I find myself a lot of the time using the same items in most of my outfits because I know I like them, and there are just so many items now it can be hard to branch out. Plus I'm lazy and don't really change my HA all that often anyway.

Also, I like your current outfit, the colors are pretty!

I remember in my earlier days, I was so proud of raising enough sp for an angelic potion, which I think was 2-5m at the time.

Oh man, this thread brings back some memories.

I have been on Subeta for 12.5 years and pretty much active the whole time (some times more than others but I always checked in at least).

I remember finding a user to buy my first gold account for me and paying only 50k for it! They then had to send in payment and let them know the gold account was for my username.

I had totally forgotten about auctions until reading this thread and now I remember stalking them frequently.

I only had dial up at home for the first couple of years on the site, so I would try to use my college computer lab in between classes to restock using their fast connection. lol I spent most of my time looking for elixirs and potions. I have 3 angelic pets from wayyyy back but I honestly have no idea how much I must have spent on those potions.

I remember site issues where they had to roll back the site several days and being so upset because of course I had gotten two new minions in he meantime, including the I-Love-You Taco, and though user admins were trying to restore what items they could, they couldn't get that back for me. I seriously only just got another I-Love-You Taco again this year after all this time because it was in the crystal shop!

I had so much fun with the restock wars, reading drive, trivia, epicon, and the different plots (I still have a ton of Masquerade 2013 plot points if anyone needs anything- hit me up haha).

I remember the emergency day when 2 staff members took over Subeta and we had to move to this domain.. it was scary..

And when we had a plot every summer (I know the summer is not over yet, but what's going on?!) xD

Wasn't the original site .com - and was pretty much a copy of Neopets? I had an older account just to try out the site from year or so earlier. I remember you couldn't have many tabs open at once and you got "timed out for too much activity" (I don't remember the message) if refreshed too quickly. This made the quests even more challenging to complete in a decent time.

In 2007 - Then it was changed to .org (so many people thought the site was lost forever since the old address didn't work) - I restarted playing, so many of us Neopet users were angry over their forced conversion of our pets.

- I do remember them taking over the site. They told everyone that Keith didn't care about the site anymore, that he abandoned it and went off spending all the money. That's how we ended with .net - I wonder how many people left because of all the drama. sigh

I am really happy to see most of progress Keith has made, and has either changed or exceded anything that was "neopets". Such as getting rid of auctions, interest, avatars, stocks...

I do remember you couldn't do anything without feeding all your pets, such as go to your wardrobe. Wizard quests were 20 (30 with GA), but I other quests were lower like 10/15GA. We had a quest that asked for computer stuff. I do miss the balloon shop (was really good place to buy things to frag).

I still miss the Graveyard shop.

Also miss the auctions. These were great for hard to sell items. If they didn't go at the original reserve price you could put them in again until you ended up with a price that someone was willing to pay.

Vending used to be a lot better in the old days. It cost 4 tokens but you could get items of much higher rarity than you can now.

Oh man. It has been way long. I was just a grade-schooler back when I joined. I'm pretty sure at that point, Keith and the other staff members were just teenagers. I found out about Subeta from someone on the staff whom I also knew on Neopets.

Before we had human avatars, we had thumbnail forum avatars. There used to be a page where you can submit your own design and younger me was so proud when my feli blob doll avatar was accepted.

I remember the Oekaki board! And having "journals" which was pretty much like a little webpage we got to customize and put whatever we want on.

I think the bloodred color wasn't as bloody as it is now. The bloodred kumos was just split down the middle with black and red on opposite sides. From what I remember of when I joined, the majority of the colors were just basic recolors of the original pet art. We didn't have potion colors yet where the pet art was completely redrawn.

Oh yeah, back when weapons didn't have any use yet because there was no actual battle system implemented yet.

I remember the Rotten Rogue random event where she would steal one of the items in your inventory. I'm very glad that event was discontinued but I wonder where she is now and what she's up to. She must be hiding out somewhere on Subeta. :D

I mostly remember restocking half the day then another half the day to manually price everything in my shop. I do not miss that. I also remember you could triple click on an item in a shop and it would purchase all three at once. Glad they changed that because I was never able to get any of the good stuff lol

There was that, and there was releasing a ton of a coveted item, I think a particular color sushi pajamas. I don't remember if the Neo friend who brought me over told me about the going to the .net site or if it was a comment somewhere else on the old site
