- If you need to re-write a sentence 5 times, do it, just don't delete any of the first four! lol. That's what keeps me sane sometimes. I've written out a couple scenes 3-4 times, but the first three attempts, I just strike through and keep going. This also helps in case I later decide that I in fact like the second version better than the 4th.
- I got 491 words! I'm past 1666 words :D Now I can go to bed feeling a bit better about myself, even if all those words were just part of background world/history building. Want to go again at :15?
A very solid start today! I'm sure you'll be all caught up in no time. :) 560 for me which brings me up to my goal for the day too.
You should join us in word wars! They are great for keeping you going and helping you get past that "must...edit!" feeling. ^^
- yes word wars are great for getting rid of that need to edit feeling! Leave that in the dust until december!
-I think you missed my edit, want to do another word war at :15 (you might have hit yesterday's goal, but today only just started!)
Ha, good point! And it would be good to jump into the next section so I can start in the middle of something when I pick it up tomorrow. So yeah, 15 at :15 sounds good!
Also wow, this is helping my forum points immensely. I don't even know when the last time was that I got a raffle ticket and I know there have been changes since, but I've already picked up three over the last day and a half. That glow paint will be mine by the end of this!
I have re-written a few paragraphs and changed the font colour on the the older ones in case I want to go back to it.
I have no idea what a word war is?
- a word war is when you basically race someone(s) else to see who can write the most words in a given period of time. We're about to start one, 15 at :15 means that we write for 15 minutes, starting at 15 past the hour (whatever your timezone may be).
You pick a length of time (we've been doing 15 minute sprints), set a timer, and write as many words as you can during the time with as little editing/deleting as possible. It can be a bit messy but it is a great way to help tone down the inner editor and just get the ideas down. (And you can always go back and edit later, haha)
For real. I fight myself on it constantly. I'm especially guilty of going back and re-wording stuff after realizing I've repeated the same word multiple times in the same paragraph... You can do it, though! Just keep going!
That sounds really neat and fun. I may join in for sure, though right now I am stepping away from the computer for something to eat. I'm sure I'm going to jump in on that in the future.
YES! Exactly, I also find myself starting paragraphs with the same word more than I'd like so I always go back and fix the wording so it won't looks so silly and repetitive.
- got 536, u? World building is so much easier, beacuse it'll never be in my story really, and there's no dialogue, so don't have to worry about people sounding awkward sauce!
576 this time! Although I did write for an extra minute to finish up a thought. :P
So true about the world building! That's what most of mine has been so far - that and writing up little creation myths for the various peoples. It does make things go much faster although I do worry that some of mine has devolved here and there into straight up stream of consciousness type bits. They do tend to raise good points that I'll need to sort out later on though, so I suppose they're not a total waste.
It's fun to read about the word wars you guys are having, I should give it a try sometime, just not now I guess. I did manage to pass the 1/5th mark early this year...but it's time to go to bed. Good night Nanos!! Good Writing!
- Wow, congrats! I past the... 1/25 mark! go me! Still in the way behind club! Yeah!
- Yeah, I decided to do some world building so that I could get my history straight while I was having the characters talking about it. up for another word war?
I'd like to, but food is calling (cinnamon rolls are hard to resist!). I'll be around tomorrow though if you want to do more then.
- Sure :) I made it to 2.5k which is a pretty good start for today. And getting all this background stuff out of my head and onto the paper is really helping I think :)
@ Kibu I sent a buddy request to both of you on the NaNo site, if that's all right with you.
Could we be buddies on there as well?
Also what writing programs are you all using? I downloaded Scrivener and right now I'm liking it more than Word.
I know I'm kinda butting in out of nowhere, but can I also ^ ask what programs ppl are using? Preferably free ones... its been hard for me to find both free and mac-compatible writing programs that don't suck the way Word does. Im tempted to try the Scrivener trial, but I probably won't be able to buy it once the trial is up, so I'm worried about losing all my stuff if I were to do that :s
: I use scrivner, it's the best! It goes on sale for $25.00 US after NoNoWriMo once you've met your goal and validated your word count. You can't beat that deal, it is so worth it. Word is just so cumbersome. If you could afford Word, you can afford Scrivner. I have it on both my Mac and the Windows machine at my work so that I can write there too.
I just use Word, but my girlfriend downloaded the Scrivner trial last year and really enjoyed it. I've been tempted to get it this year myself.
I also tend to take copious, copious notes and outline everything by hand in a regular college-ruled notebook - doing it by hand forces me to think about it more and remember what I'm writing and it feels like (for me) it's easier to flip through and find other things.
I've decided to use Scrivener, since I can keep track of all my notes in the same place. Don't know yet if I'll buy it after NaNo, depends on funds and on whether I decide that I actually am an aspiring writer. :P Currently, I'm just doing this for fun! I considered just using Word, since we already have that, but...eh, free trial of Scrivener, need to try it out! I do however also use a notebook to write down stuff in, either when it just feels more appropriate or I don't have the option of turning on the computer.
Come over here for Word Wars!
