Adding my wishes.
Mass reading. I would definitely use this feature because well paid jobs require a lot of intelligence.
More pet jobs. Somewhere in the forums is a topic where Amber asked users for job ideas and there are many great suggestions.
I forgot to respond to some things and I am always very opinionated.
I also +10000 the idea of being able to remove food eaten records. I'm iffier on books just due to the intelligence factor but I would love to be able to clear the food eaten. I have a few pets that I accidentally fed items that the character would never eat, and yes I keep it all hidden and no one else knows but I know and I wish I could just pay some sP to remove that lol.
Loading my pet page always takes so long that to see if my gourmand pet is hungry or not, I always just go to use a food item in my inventory instead haha. It's much faster for me! I really like your idea about potentially having pets tags on Kumos, I was thinking about that as well and I think it would make a lot of sense. I hope it's something that could potentially be workable and helpful for the site. It'd be nice if I could have certain 'active' battlers and that sort of thing, so that my entire pet list wouldn't have to be loaded every single time I go to challenge an opponent.

books
- For mass-reading books, I'd rather have an option like the 'mass add to TC' page than pay 25 CSC to auto-read books that I have to buy anyways. It doesn't feel worthwhile to pay the equivalent of 2 mil. to skip reading 25k worth of restockable books. If I'm paying 25 CSC, it should be for intel I can't gain easily otherwise (much like the training center) or ALL of the books in my inventory. Otherwise, I have no problem just reading 25 books a day to the same pet.
spotlight
- For incentives, I like the idea of unique items being rewarded in achievement tiers. I don't care much for the sP/CSC awards since it would be quite a pittance for the amount of effort I put in my pets haha.
Pets who've been in queue for a year should be auto-bumped to be first in line to win spotlight.
I agree that a volunteer review team should be considered to help move the queue along. One of the complaints I've seen that have completely discouraged some users is when their pets are rejected after a year. That shouldn't happen.
foods
- For foods, I think we should be able to use the cleansing bath multiple times a day. Like, every two hours, you can use it again. There are so many food items at this point, newer users need it.
subscription perks
As someone who has no interest in CWs, I'd love a more pet-geared subscription tier too. With prizes of:
other
I want to be able to vote for the next pet color, species, revamp, experiment (from a pool picked by staff, so they have some control over what's released next and to avoid only popular species getting releases). It could be an anniversary thing, even.
Ability to click multiple TC items and move them all at once. As a big TC owner... would be much appreciated.
An option to toggle pet info. Like said, it takes a while for the pet page to load. I don't need to see every birth date, 0 hunger/happiness meter, stats, etc. of every pet.
The option to toggle to a more condensed training center page. Right now, I'm using custom CSS to hide pet images. But I'd love a hamburger style that's just the bare minimum. Color-alternated rows for better viewing.
Intel leech please.
... Okay that's enough from me. But I'm happy to see the discussion around pets!
I don't know the exact specifics of how it works, but from my experience it:
A. Won't do anything. If you don't see a message in battle about it putting a curse on your pets, nothing happened. B. Will put a curse on a PORTION of your pets, in which that portion will lose happiness or hunger. C. Won't affect the pet using it in battle.
I haven't counted up to see exactly how many pets are affected at once, but I do notice sometimes other pets will lose hunger, but not my gourmand. It's not really reliable, sometimes I do all my BQs and my gourmand doesn't get any hunger loss.
LOL
Drills is what gave me the idea about the playing with toys despite happiness! I know for sure myself and others have also had pets in queue for 6m +
Thank you for the support and input! I completely agree. Per discussions, I feel like the lack of spotlight wins these days is actively discouraging people. We need to build the pet fanbase. And the more passionate people are about pets the more they invest in the site for species and color changes, jobs, battle, etc. More job options would be fun and I think if jobs could match characters people would be more interested!
Added your ideas to OP!
I think more ways are probably good since the pool is once a day and I was told the glove was capped? I think ^^'
This tag idea is a good one!
I also was just reading to pets and I had the thought - even just improving the mechanics of reading as is would be a huge deal. Like, from the page for a pet click "read to pet" and that takes me to a page that shows all the books in my inventory. Ideally, those already read would not show up or would be somehow noted, but even just being able to read this way would be easier. Go to pet, click "read to pet", click a book, pop up "X book has been read to X pet" appears, page refreshes after 5 seconds, repeat. If book has already been read (if they're not denoted) then pop up says "this book has already been read to X" and you close that and pick a different one. Like, just being able to sit there and click, wait 5 seconds, click, wait 5 seconds is better than the current system.
Added your ideas to OP!
Tysm for the input and support! I was just talking about a "tabbed" TC the other day and love the idea of being able to at least break them into categories vs having to use custom CSS to do it. Added your ideas to OP!
TYSM for the input and support! I feel like so many more people would be invested in jobs if reading wasn't so terrible lol. Not sure if battle also is tied to int? But if it is, there too. And I remember someone saying battlers bring in money to the site sooo lol
Oooooh, good point on the voting! Placed this under "removed" suggestions in the OP and added your reason!
TYSM for all the input and support! I added your ideas to the OP! Love the subscription idea, even as someone who enjoys CWs lol
I giveth, mockups (re: mass reading)
Keith has been given the mockups, so we shall see. 👀 This feature would be a new daily, cost no sPs or CSC because of its restriction to one pet a day. Item limits are reflective of inventory space availability for non-GAs (100) and GAs (250).

FINALLY getting around to this thread! I Will be commenting on the areas that affect me as an OC/creator pet-focused person. I think most of the suggestions here are very needed QOL now that we can have like 100+ pets, but since I'm mostly focused on making nice profiles for my OCs, I'll only comment on the stuff that I would use!
Yes to all of this, ESPECIALLY number 1. We got mass add YEARS ago, and it's crazy that we do not have mass removal. I feel like mass removal is a pretty urgent need, and a massive oversight of the current system. It's almost like it's a feature that was just forgotten when implementing the current TC system, as it makes no sense to allow us to move 25 items at once in a TC, have TCs with HUNDREDS of items, and then have no way to remove more than ONE iteam at once.
Categories in TCs in like a dream, but I can see how it would potentially involve more coding/may not be possible with the current system.
Mass move seems like it should be a thing, since we can move TC slots. I'd even be willing to pay for this feature like the move TC slots.
Oh my do I have a lot of thoughts about the spotlight... I'm going to try to keep this organized.
Overall, the spotlight as it is right now, running once a week, simply doesn't work. It has now been over 7 months since the pet spotlight has been running once a week. The reason for this change was said to be allowing staff to 'refill' the pool of potential winners.
I believe that 7 months is more than enough time to refill the pool of winners, and that we are well overdue to see the spotlight return to run 2 or even 3 times a week. I see people having completed pets several times a week on the pet forum and pet discords I'm part of. There seems to be quite a pool of nominated pets now.
Since the spotlight changed to run only once a week, there has been a little over 30 winners. Out of these 30 winners, 5 users won the spotlight twice. This wouldn't be an issue if the spotlight ran several times a week, many of us have a lot of pets! But with it running only once a week, and the cooldown to win again being only 2 weeks, it does mean that users with least pets may struggle to get their pet in the spotlight. If the spotlight is to stay running once a week (which I seriously hope won't), I suggest a longer cooldown between win, potentially something like 3 months, to allow more users to see their pets win.
But what I ultimately want to see, if the spotlight returning to its former glory and running 3 times a week at least. Toyhou.se is super popular, people love making OCs and displaying their work, this is a niche Subeta should exploit. I like the idea of having more incentive to win the spotlight.
All of these are a big YES for me. We should get a notification when our pet go into the winner queue, so this way we KNOW that this pet is 'ok' and we don't need to make further edits or anything.
Re: Number 2: Sooooooo many veteran users, who know the site rules, would be willing to help with this. It could be a pre-screening, we could leave notes for official staff so they could review the queue faster. It would be so easy for trained volunteers to do a good job here and help official staff. I never understood why Subeta was so anti-volunteers. A site like Subeta should EMBRACE volunteers. Subeta has a declining userbase, with limited financial resources for staff. But there's a ton of users that have been here for 15+ years that would LOVE to help the site. Users with actual job experience that could help. Hell, I would love to help the site. I'd volunteer tomorrow if I could do something for Subeta with my years of communication, marketing and social media community management real job experience.
Many sites are run only by volunteers, or mostly by volunteers with a few paid staff. It never made sense to me that Subeta never wanted to use the power of its community to elevate itself. Something like a pet spotlight queue community review is a great example of how volunteers can and should help the site (this is my years of working full time for an animal shelter with 200 volunteers staff speaking. If the community wants to help: take the help!)
Ok that's all for my TED talk on volunteers.
Re: Number 5: I've already voiced my opinion on the specific thread about this, but yes. Please. Make it a cleansing pool like for names. It makes no sense that we can't cleanse spotlight wins from years and years ago!
That will be all for now since my lunch break is over. Love to see all this talk about PETS. I love pets and they're the reasons I'm still on Subeta after all these years!
I am anti-volunteer for anything that a staff member is paid for. We might just be players, but if a staff member is doing something, our time should be compensated if we're doing the same task. Period.
Yes, the pet spotlight can afford to be more than weekly, now. But if the person that is looking at submissions is overloaded and can do it, it might be time to actually HIRE someone in charge of pet content? Finishing up the Subetapedia, taking care of the spotlight, brandishing the whip at the poor overworked artists...
Using this logic, mini mods should be compensated since users admins also do moderation.
I strongly disagree with this point of view as a whole tbh. Subeta is an old site, that from all account is barely making ends meet. The one staff responsible for user submitted content/CW approval is a part-time staff member that works 2-3 times a week. If they can't even afford to pay a full-time staff member to look at CW, there are nooooo way they'll be able to pay someone to look at pets content. Pets content probably doesn't make enough money to even consider it. We didn't even get a SINGLE pet for survival, artists don't seem to even make much pet content anymore. It's a vicious cycle: pets don't generate enough for the site, so no resources are invested in pets, users aren't interested in spending, pets don't generate enough andddd the cycle repeats.
I'm also against this idea that 'people should be paid for everything' in this specific context: Subeta is ultimately about community, it ain't Neopets or some corporation making millions. I don't want to see this place die, and if people are willing to volunteer their time to help keep the site afloat, why shouldn't they be allowed to? Those volunteers could get perks for their time, like GA, some CSC etc. (I believe minimods do get a GA at least). And if pets do become profitable, sure! Let's eventually pay those people.
Again maybe I'm wrong, and maybe the site does make bank and has money that we don't see, but I'd like to believe things are better now and not like they used to be 15 years ago...
Free GAs and free CSC ARE a compensation. They're an expense from Subeta to pay you - compensation =/= paycheck.
"But why couldn't we do it for free"
My sister in arm, the reason why you shouldn't do any kind of tedious clerical work without compensation is because you and your time are worth more than nothing.
And I'm glad that Subeta IS handling this that way - even though they COULD go and do the job with unpaid volunteers who are getting nothing for their time, they don't. That's a massive kudos from my end - people who are working ARE getting something in exchange.
Just because I want more pet content doesn't mean I want people to be exploited for it. So I'm 100% behind staff's decision on this, and I would be a little disappointed if they decide to give this task to people who aren't getting anything from it.
That's my core of thinking it'd be nice. Just I've seen so many pets totally rehauled (yay!) that I'd love to see them win in their own merit if that makes sense. 💛
They/ThemI didn't realize how badly I wanted this until I redid Ruanna the other day. I love building large treasure chests, it's one of my favorite things to do on Subeta and it genuinely helps me develop characters at times. But I absolutely can't stand having the item name only display on hover (not only does it somehow look weird to me but I also use my tablet pen to browse a lot and it's pretty finicky about hovers, they only work half the time for whatever reason, so it's super annoying when I want to find out the name of an item in a TC), and having 200+ items displayed with names and everything with zero breaks between items feels overwhelming to look at. (It also feels overwhelming when I hide the item names, lol, it's just even worse with them because they add so much scrolling.)
We can add things like this by, say, targeting the specific treasure chest item number div, or more convoluted methods involving pseudo-classes and attribute selectors and things like that. These options work but they can be a real pain. I consider all of my pet TCs to be forever WIPs, I'm always trying to add to them and I often rearrange things, and so I'm a lot less inclined to want to spend all that time on CSS for that kind of organization, when I'd likely have to update things pretty much whenever I added items or rearranged things much.
So anyway! The idea of a different way of doing treasure chests, with more organization options, is really appealing. Multiple treasure chests could be incorporated into profiles in cool ways, like displaying items that represent certain parts of the story in the relevant area, items that represent friends with the friend section, etc. Even just having different "compartments" for treasure chests would be a nice improvement, if multiple TCs on a pet is too much.
But, ah, so many Subeta users put serious creative time and talent into pet profiles and treasure chests are such a big part of those, it would be amazing to see if more could be done with TCs (without overly convoluted CSS haha -- I think a lot of this is already technically possible but so annoying to do that most people probably don't bother!)

All I want is more experiments in chibi ;0; Adopting out spotlight winners strips them of the win, for the new user to gave a go. Pet spotlight highlighting winners on that day in previous years so hard work can still be seen and appreciated
edit swap birthdays! I would love to find a pet with the birthday I want and swap it with the birthday of my pet has.
ok I am very sick today and overall not a very smart person in general so I don't know how much this is going to contribute to anything,
BUT,
re: volunteers for subeta. I am, in general, 100% against unpaid labor, because everybody deserves to be compensated for their time. if you're a business and you're relying on underpaying workers to get by, then you don't really deserve to be in business at all, so on and so forth. thing is, I don't really see subeta as a business? like, I know it legally must be with the amount of money coming in and going out, but it's not a giant, evil corporation that pays its cashiers minimum wage so that the CEO can save up for his fifth superyacht. I think subeta is much more like my local zoo and aquarium, where paid employees and volunteers work together to give everyone who visits a better experience? idk. I'm hung up on 's use of the word "exploited" in terms of subeta having volunteers. if you went to my local zoo/aquarium and asked the volunteers if they felt exploited, I imagine the overall answer would be "no", since, because they are volunteers, they are free to walk away whenever they want (although I guess I don't know this for certain, maybe I'm being too optimistic here). volunteers generally volunteer because they want to help, the reward for them is the satisfaction of doing a good thing, and, like, YEAH in an ideal world the zoo would compensate them for their time too, BUT I imagine there are a few volunteers out there who would refuse payment, period, because they're happy to spend their free time this way?
I do potentially see an issue coming up where the line between unpaid/volunteer work and paid work could blur. I think that's what was referring to when they said that they were absolutely against volunteers doing anything a staff member is paid for. if someone was paid to go through the pet spotlight queue at one point, I can see the ethical dilemma of "outsourcing" that job to an unpaid volunteer. still, though... there has to be a way to restructure things so that we could be allowed to volunteer, right? for example, as of right now, it doesn't seem like the person in charge of pet spotlight approval/denial has the time to even DO that part of their job - I mean, I just read a comment today where someone said it took two years for their pet to get denied. like... come on. what is that? people are passionate about this site feature, and there are people literally clamoring to volunteer so that the pet spotlight queue can move faster... but instead... month after month... things continue to move at a snail's pace.
again, I don't LIKE unpaid labor, and I would 100% be against anyone doing volunteer work if subeta were a megacorporation, but it's... not. it's a passion project that regular subeta users happen to be passionate about. people are begging for the chance to volunteer, because they want to help the site get better.
...I don't really know how to end this post. I'm certain subeta staff has its own reasons for not approving volunteer work in the past. but I do think it's strange for the site to refuse volunteers, when there are site features that could easily be improved by having just one or two.
ok bye

I'm old school. Volunteering by definition is unpaid work; your paid instead by the love and satisfaction you have for what you're volunteering for, as well as the experience that you gain. That experience then looks good on resumes etc. etc.
I work part-time, usually just on the weekends. Warmer weather means I'm out there more often for things. But, when I'm not, I'm home all day with nothing to do. There's things around the site I feel I could easily help with. I'm autistic so going through the pet spotlight queue would not bore me. Writing news posts, or Subetapedia lore (that then obviously has to get approval before publishing), I can do that.
My dream still is that putting in some volunteer work here on Subeta means that I could eventually become a battle admin. But I want to prove my worth first, and I'd much rather volunteer to do so. Money is nice, of course, but experiencing things is way more valuable to me. Being part of the bigger picture and helping out where I know I can is my reward.
But like I said, I'm old school. I will never agree with the sentiment that volunteer work means you need to be paid monetarily.
Wanna know more about battling? ❤️ The Official Battle Guide v3.3 ❤️ Need to find books? 🌈 The Book Grind Guide v1.0 🌈
To volunteer is to make a donation - just a donation of time and services rather than money. If I donate my time and services, it doesn't mean that I think they have no value, just as donating to a charity doesn't mean I think money has no value. It means that I care about the recipient organization enough to give them something of value without expecting anything in return, just as I give gifts to people I love without expecting anything in return.
Equating volunteer work with exploitation is a fundamental (and imo mercenary) misrepresentation of what volunteer work is. It's completely different from a worker who is hired for a job and then underpaid.
If people don't want to provide their time/services to an organization without compensation, then they don't have to volunteer. That doesn't mean others should be prevented from doing so.
ETA I 100% agree with Metroid here: "Money is nice, of course, but experiencing things is way more valuable to me. Being part of the bigger picture and helping out where I know I can is my reward." I would love to volunteer to help Subeta in any way I could, because I place more value on helping a site I love than on money.
I know you started a new job (congratulations!) and have a lot going on over at Kumos (thank you for your endless work on this!) but I was hoping to snag your attention and see if some of these suggestions may be easy enough to implement sometime soon? Here are some of the most mentioned QOL-related ones that I hope may be easy to implement in some form:
"Mass" / "Auto" Reading Is it possible on Kumos (I figure that's easier than legacy to try something new lol) for there to be some way to offer a "scheduled reading" type option that's similar to auto-training in the gym? The way I envision what I'm asking for is a page (maybe a "reading room" that you access via the library?) where you pay to read x # of selected books from your inventory to x pet over the next 24hrs. You would select the pet first, then the reading room will pull up what books are in your inventory and those that your pet has already read will be not selectable. I think if you select the pet first it wouldn't be horrible on the servers to pull up the info. While making it a GA / Sub perk would likely incentivize folks to get those, it's such a QOL thing that putting it behind an IRL paywall seems mean. So I was thinking it could be like autotraining, 25 CSC + X sP to use. Not sure what the limit should be. I mean, realistically for it to be worth it I would think at least 25 books?
Improve Reading Mechanics Personal > Pets > Select Pet. From that page be able to select "Read to Pet" and it opens a page with all the books that are in your inventory. Ideally, the code will be able here to not show / notate already read books, but if not that's workable. User clicks chosen book, pop-up that says "X book has been read to X" appears for 5 seconds, page auto-reloads. If a book that has already been read is clicked pop-up window says "Oops! X has already read this book!" and user closes out of pop-up and picks new book.
Simplified training mechanics - redesign gym page with a drop down menu under each pet that defaults to "none" and lists the training category options (level, strength, etc). We can select for multiple pets and then click "begin training" button at bottom of page. Right now we have to select and begin, load new page, click, return to main page, repeat per pet. Autotraining could have it's own button at bottom (so "begin training" and "autotrain").
Simplified Training Completion Mechanics - For all the pets that have finished training in the training center, just need to click one button to take them all out and show a list of all the stats gained (like collect all income) so we no longer need to click "Done" and load a page, then return to main page for every single pet.
Having it moving quicker and more incentivized, they could then likely get more people investing in the site (ex: subscriptions or csc for GA perks, pet slots, csc for potions, etc). They could also have a subscription perk where there are two "queues" and one is reviewed in X number of days or at X% and the other (subscription queue) has a shorter timeline / "better" percentage.
Thank you for taking the time to read over these ideas! There are more in the first post, but I wanted to try and cut down at least a little and focus on the ones that the majority of folks weighing in have voiced strong wants / needs for.
I also wanted to toss out, people seem to be discouraged to work on their pets with the spotlight being SO slow (waiting months or years for a denial or win) and having no way of knowing if they've moved to the second queue until they win. If it's ever an option, I would love to work part-time for the site to manage the spotlight. The hope being that a dedicated person working a few hours a week could bump the spotlight back to a regular flow with winners at least 3x per week. I'd be happy to do this in exchange for my subscription or some CSC vs USD if that's what is holding things back. There are some ideas about incentivizing spotlight in the first post, but I wanted to toss this out there just in case it's even a potential thing. I know myself and several others would be happy to do this.
Thanks again!
