I've been wanting some kind of plot or event surrounding this character for years. They could do so much with her but all she does is take advantage of Subeta's day/night cycle and not much else.
could we get some sort of update on this? I know there’s a lot going on with the site and it’s understaffed, but this feels like it should be a priority to at least make some of the minor tweaks, in order to do away with the parts of these characters that are actively harmful. It sounds like a larger revamp was the goal, but if that has been put on the back burner perhaps a compromise could be made and a simple rewrite could happen so that they are at least no longer associated with DID, since it’s been expressed to be hurtful by folks who experience that?

Unfortunately even a rewrite is a bigger task than it seems on the surface; what is being rewritten and how is still something to pin down and we’d need to tackle even that one particular part all across the lore of Subeta from Subetapedia to items to quest descriptions. We need to be able to do all the changes at once. This will be easier to coordinate after the season switch, though, so watch this space!

Glad to see an update on this, understandable that staff has full plate right now, but would it maybe be possible to just make a quick change to stuff like the "Split Personality" achievement name? even if its just a placeholder it would be a big improvement and show that staff think stuff like this is important.
Seriously though thank you for an update and the fact that staff is planning a nice full update on Mori/Nori/Mono Ri :)
... I might overstep here, but I do that a lot but...
Why not leave some of the rewriting to the userbase? Make a contest of it with maybe a username/pet slot totem as a prize here and there for X amount done? Something akin to that?
I remember a time where Subeta was classifying colors, categorizing items, etc, it's not exactly out of the realm of possibility and I feel Subeta lost some of its... user friendliness when these things were either A) not implemented again in the newer coding or B) simply ignored afterwhile and discarded entirely after a bit longer.

agreeing with this! i managed to get both achievements within 4 months and it was still the same so ngl it made me a bit sad. probably more pressing matters, but words hold weight. the removal of the term 'split personality' was the crux of the issue anyway.
I think it would be a good idea to prioritize the acknowledgment and removal of derisive content separately from a content update.
Just want to jump on and say we'd rather update everything at once so nothing gets missed. I've started going through and making a huge checklist of any items with Nori and Mori along with places mentioned around site etc. We've seen in the past that doing things piece by piece really does leave us in that position of oh we forgot this one bit, we'll do it eventually or thought we already did this! type thing.
Oops didnt respond to this right away, but thank you for the update Amber. I understand how the team works, but its somewhat disappointing that we'll have to just keep waiting. I'm really happy that you guys are willing to put in the work to overhaul so much for this, and that you want to be thorough and get it all done, but I also agree with Nix's sentiments above. An announcement would go a long way, especially while we still have the "two faced"/"split personality" stuff on site
If we don't get anything out before Masquerade, I'll make sure to do a statement somewhere. I'm hoping we'll get this (article, achievement, items, other misc places on site) sorted out within the next week! :)
I've got it! How about Nori stays as-is, human. But Mori resembles a monster-like entity, in support of Maleria. Instead of drawing uncomfortable parallels to DID, this will be more akin to a werewolf scenario. Making Mori resemble a gargoyle-like entity would would be the best alternative.
You could even get creative with this. Mori could be the base form, and Nori is the unnatural transformation. She could become a gargoyle, a mutant, a stone statue like stated. The options are limitless.
Also at , gross food and feeding your pet poop will never not be funny. I mean, come on now! It's quintessential humour brought to us from our forefathers. And I get what you mean, but at the same time you don't have to view this as just changing characters for the sake of change. You can view this as a chance for artistic improvement. Expanding upon concepts that were merely touched upon when they were created.
"come on now" is trivializing. Why is your concern about how Subeta characters are ethically treated more valid than mine?
This isn't pie. There was no need for you to trivialize my trigger when advocating for yours.
so I hope shit is changed soon so this can all be water under the bridge bc damn it's a long time comin but if masq is the deadline then we are all nearly there folks
anyway here's wonderwall
COMES IN EXCEEDINGLY LATE AFTER SEEING THE NOTE IN TODAY'S NEWS BECAUSE I DON'T CHECK THE FORUMS ENOUGH
Hi I have professionally diagnosed DID, got a small system of 3 currently but back when we were a system of two, we really did see one of us as "day-themed" and the other as "night-themed". Yeah we didn't get along immediately when we found out we were a system. But we're much closer now!
I absolutely agree that DID/DDNOS/OSDD/plurality is really diverse and therefore one single NPC could not possibly represent it perfectly for everyone. HOWEVER. I LOVE that Mori/Nori/Mono Ri can be read to be plural! (Whenever I try getting my friends in to Subeta, I literally pull up this NPC to show them "Look! This character gives me DID vibes!") The sad reality is that we're starved of decent/good DID rep. The ones that love to pump out advertised DID rep are Hollywood movies saying "DID gives you a scary killer personality that you can't control". The number of good/decent DID reps I like don't even add up to 10. One NPC on a petsite won't capture having a dissociative disorder perfectly for a lot of people, but I like that this NPC can be relatable for some. I especially love the items with descriptions saying that they think of each other, that sometimes they try to get along, that they just exist together.
+Agreeing with: Changing up old terms that are tied to outdated ideas. Change things like "split personality", "good", "evil", "two-faced". Replace with maybe things like "alternate state", "the other side of the coin", "a light in the dark", "a shadow cast by light", "light/day-loving", "night/dark-loving", "warm sunbeam", "refreshing shade", "energized by sunlight", "restored by moonlight". (Dark things aren't bad!) Minions can be changed from "Blessed" and "Cursed" to "Feathered" and "Scaled".
I'm excited to see which direction the staff goes with, I trust them. (My personal wish would be to see Mori/Nori/Mono Ri still existing in a state of functioning multiplicity, just without the connotation that one is "evil". =P)
Hello there! I'm part of a DID system, and positive or neutral representation is notoriously hard to come by. I think Mori and Nori's plurality is a lovely thing, though with the current lore there are several troubling elements and I agree that the achievement names should be changed.
When it comes to their backstory, with magically induced multiplicity, it could be more meaningful and interesting of a dynamic if both shinwa and maleria wanted to godfather a child, and each (accidentally) cast their own blessing on one particular child. The child could potentially grow up with a mischievous and troublemaking side (Mori) and a gentle and curious side (Nori). Their parents could remain alive albeit confused when their child praises shinwa during the day and maleria come nightfall. Still, with these emergent traits and interests, they could love their daughter all the same and extend support until its time for them to leave the nest.
Mori and Nori being within the same body yet having this stark dichotomy of darkness and light is a strong theme with these characters that doesn't have to disappear! They could even start out disliking eachother for their differences, then grow to find company and solidarity in one another and create a harmonious relationship.
IN SHORT: Their plurality is significant and welcome; an earnest but awkward try is better than nothing at all, and I believe in what you can improve with them going forward!
I won't speak to the DID aspect since it's not my wheelhouse, and people who do have personal experience have already spoken up about it. However, I would like to see a move away from the black and white, good and evil dichotomy. The born evil trope has never been one I enjoyed, since the idea that someone is irredeemably evil without choice in the matter both says some things I don't like about moralistic determination, and because it stagnates the character with no complexity of choice or room for growth. (On a slight tangent, I also don't think kids are capable of being evil evil. I think they can be truly awful sadistic little brats, but I also think that their behavior is largely influenced by the way adults, friends, and role models around them act, model, and react to what they do. I think the brain has to bake a bit more before someone can really comprehend the consequences and deliberately make choices that I would consider "evil.")
I personally like to think of Mori as someone struggling with a cruel fate imposed by someone else, trying to understand it by acting the way she thinks she should. But underneath it, I think perhaps she's still a scared little girl. I tend to be on later and usually end up doing her quests anyway, and her dialogue is so cute (I mean, she greets the user as someone who loves the night sky as much as her, and tells you to be off quick as a shadow, that's just adorable) so I admit to having a soft spot for her. I'd love to see some ambiguity interjected into the characters, moving away from the "one is good and she does sweet good things, and one is evil and does bad evil things." Maybe even a reconciliation between Mori and Nori? They did dress up as each other for Morostide, I feel like there's potential for it.
I have also always seen Shinwa and Maleria's struggle as less of an epic battle between good and evil, and more of an ego-driven spat between two goddesses who also happen to be good and evil, and would be really interested in seeing Mori and Nori rewritten as two possibly less than willing humans caught up in it since birth. I'd like to see Mori as someone trying to fill a role she feels she has to, going through the motions to keep Maleria happy but not actually believing in the core tenets of cruelty and suffering. And I'd like to see how Nori copes with being "the good one" who gets to do more enjoyable nice things that make people happy but also dealing with the weight of all those expectations, and feeling like she can never lose her temper after a frustrating day, or do anything other than be pure and good like Shinwa expects.
Also, please keep Mori's adorable quest dialogue and just tweak it if you have to, I'll be sad if it goes away :(
So, I'll also admit that I don't have much experience with DID, so I'll just put my backing behind the opinions of everyone who does.
Mori/Nori happens to be one of, if not my favorite character, and the part I liked the most was how they had kind of a tragic past, but they seem to be getting to know each other. Through that and some of the item lore that I have seen, they seem to have a "We're talking to each other and trying to figure out who we are" kind of vibe. Not to mention, Nori in particular doesn't strike me as particularly evil. They seem like a more Day/Night analogue to Shinwa/Maleria's egotistical good/evil bit.
My suggestion is that Mori/Nori becomes the comparatively reasonable being trying to keep the balance between light and dark. Basically the sane third choice in a conflict between two war criminals (RIP Selenis) who happen to represent good and evil.
The two bits of lore that I would recommend removing would be Maleria manipulating Mono Ri's parents, and the subsequent murder thereof. Those two bits always seemed squicky to me. Besides we have Marena as a "Child sacrificing monster" we don't need a second one imo.
the lack of response from staff on this when multiple users with DID have spoken up and given multiple ideas for their lore when the base concern was... an achievement name, not necessarily asking their entire lore to be rewritten, is really frustrating. we wanted an offensive and outdated term for an achievement changed.
i'm very glad staff wanted to address the problematic backstory but genuinely some responses in here are literally just "take away the DID implications and just make them a MONSTER CREATURE instead!!" and i don't really think people are aware how hurtful / dismissive it is to us with DID that would like positive and correct rep instead of just removing it for sensitivity or palate's sake...
but. i genuinely don't think changing an offensive term should have to wait 1.5 years because staff thinks it needs to wait to be pushed out with an entire character rewrite. just irritating to see other insensitive terms and item names be changed within the span of a week while this gets brushed under the rug despite effected parties expressing their hurt.
