Subeta is weird compared to most fighting focused games but probably normal for these kind of HA or pet sites though. In that I don't think people are pulled here for battling in general. They come for the HAs or pet art and kind of fall into battling along the way.

Training a pet and battling are what you do on the side while spending 80+ hours or more making outfits for HAs, adopting and getting your first pets colored, questing, learning the user shop system, and just learning how to get around the place in general.

If the only thing you do here is train a pet and battle then 80+ hours will suck. I don't even know how you can do any of it without engaging in the other site features to make sp. Unless you just dump real money in but I don't think that's considered the normal experience of the site.

I do think making early battle more engaging and therefore a draw for new players would be a good thing. I agree it's the early tiers that are off putting. The combination of not having an official in your face walkthrough of how the system works plus the thousands of useless weapons in addition to the perceived wait time before you can start to battle together kills new players' interest.

I think if we can get some aspects of early battling on here to be more enticing and engaging, it could get players to the late-game. Adjusting the easy opponents and the like to giving more EXP or buffing some early tier weapons to actually be useful could be all that's needed.

I suppose I have to ask, is a fixed amount of healing better than a percentage-based? Like getting back 50HP per use compared to a fixed percent of 2% per use, for an early tier weapon?

When I started playing Subeta HAs didn't exist. I also had only two pets until very recently. My focus has always been on the pets - meaning training and battling. I do the other stuff solely to earn funds for training and weapons. I actually think it's weird to not train your pets when you are on a pet site. 😆

Honestly that's what I did too. Almost 15 years ago I was digging through the limited weapon info within my first week. Training and battling from day one.

But.... appearently that's far from the norm.

The addition of custom wearables moved it to a more HA site than pet/battling site, which is fair because it generated a lot of income.

The problem is the only people who want to decorate their HA are already here, it’s not a large sect of people. The amount people who are interested in battling, turn based rpg games though, is HUGE.

If there was some type of grinding method added to battling I could stream this on twitch and get new joins daily. The thing is there’s no reward for grinding, (not big enough to justify streaming on twitch for 3-6 hours).

I’m really excited to see this effort being put forth to do something with the battle system here. If this place is gonna survive it should be much more battle forward. Because battle type games is what the general populace plays, not decorate-your-person games.

I sought out the training facility and the battle coliseum my first day, but I wasn't digging through weapon info probably a year or two after. I think I mostly used item hunter items for that first year! I remeber my first big battle purchase was the Shinwas Temple Shard. I also invested in a few Turkey Quills, one for each of my pets, cus back then there wasn't global sets, it was one per pet. Turkey Quill is where it was at in those days! 7-30% heal and reflected physical. Man, I do not miss icon reflection, that was always so weird to me.

I have no memories other than...I think you have to train a pet somewhat to get into the Blue Building, and that's how I got started actually. I think I just kept going with training El and thought he had a lot of stats (he really didn't). xD

I remember restocking temple shards and they got down to under like 2m. Good times.

As someone who came Neopets, I got into training up my pet fairly early. I still don’t know the intricacies of battling but I do have a fun time with it.

There hasn't been any sign of the last challengers from last year yet. Maybe they're waiting until the last minute to add the score pages because we all know it's most likely to be Shinwa. I'll be really surprised if it isn't Shinwa or the Oracle.
