Wow, neopets. That was so long ago, the site has changed a lot since then. Oddly enough, subeta has not, and perhaps that’s why I’ve been here so long. Congratulations on your grandchild! You must have seen so much of life through the years, irl and online. As someone younger, it is reassuring to hear that people we care about will find their way back to our side. I first met during the previous Blake Steele plot, where he and Saggitarius were each making expeditions and users could choose to join with either. I sided with Team Blake, and through the TB forum group and the overall plot thread I first noticed her seeking battle advice for her main pet Tos, and secondary Tharg. I sent her a handful of items that had helped me with Kilroy and SunDragon and we began to actively chat from there, and by the time that the plot wrapped up with the temple guardians being defeated, we had formed the foundation of our friendship. Over the subsequent years we have stayed in touch, sharing avatar advice, working out battle strategies, just chatting about the events going on in our lives. She is one of my best friends on Subeta, and though we have gradually slowed down in keeping up with one another that is mostly my social anxiety to blame. it's true, so much has changed over there I haven't really gone back since I left, other than to see what's going on every couple of years. It makes me sad how corporate it feels. I remember the days of Donna and Adam and how we had so much fun. But then when Viacom took over, friends were getting iced left and right for the most stupid things. And then my best friend lost her account to a hacker and they stole her draik. Instead of giving her pet back, they iced the hacker's account and she lost her pet forever. I'm so glad we found this pet site! Thank you for the gift. I truly appreciate it! ❤

literary translation? elaborate please. is it like translation from other languages or is it a translation from like, art and visual methods to words?

i think it's fascinating to see texts from other languages translated and how much it can vary from translator to translator. there are so many subtle nuances that can easily be lost, which i think is a problem with no straightforward answer.

i only know a bit of Spanish, but Spanish to English is pretty straightforward, except for very minor grammatical differences. i can't imagine translating something from a different language family to another.

i think a good memory i've had was this past luminaire. i'd recently came back from taking a couple year break from the site, and i wanted to get more involved with the community!

christmas generally isn't a good time for me because of some past trauma, (and also having spent the last what....11 years on the site? really helped me have a positive outlet during some rough patches) but this year going around and being active with gifting people things, posting on the luminaire forum and participating in those "give X to the person above" really helped me put a positive tone for the season this past year! plus someone gave me one of the most wished for items on my wishlist, which was really special to me. it felt good to be a part of the community again!

As for me, I joined Subeta a long time ago haha. I had just moved schools due to a bullying problem and I felt incredibly lonely. It was around this time I was discovering things such as Neopets, Wajas, etc... Subeta was the one that stuck. I stumbled into a Cult forum and ended up loving the cult's focus. I made some lifelong friends and they kept me company in the incredibly difficult times of my youth. I was quiet and shy at school, I'd come home and rush to chat with my friends off-site. While we faded from Subeta, I followed them to their own forum where we continued to rp. It was also during this time I was super motivated to develop my art skills. I had troubles at school, so I focused all my energy into my online social life and improving my art skills to show my friends. They encouraged and inspired me. I ended up going to art school for college and I think the community that raised me in Subeta is a huge part of that! I keep in touch with them on Facebook now, I've watched them grow, change, (some) get married, graduate, move and travel. Some of us even met up in real life, with four of us meeting up in the New England area. It's funny to think of how just joining a pet site led to such big personal developments in my life haha

Oh man. So, way back when I joined, 13 years ago, I had my heart set on a darkmatter montre. It was perfect for my Pergatori. This was way back when Subeta itself was a wee babby site. I somehow found a site that was giving away items. It was off subeta and could have been sketchy, but I had nothing to lose. And they weren't asking for any information. I put in my wish and wound up winning. And Perg has been darkmatter since! I don't remember the site or how I found it, but I think of it every time I potion another pet.

Oh, another thing that might age me... Years ago when I was getting married (that was a mistake) I mentioned it in the shoutbox. And they wound up teaming up to get me my dream pet - A graveyard telenine. My Baen.

One meaningful moment on here was when one of my Subeta friends nominated me to be ticket bombed for the potion lottery. I wasn't online when it happened, so I opened up the site to see hundreds of notifications and my heart pounding because I didn't know what was going on. It was really heartwarming to see that so many people were dedicated to seeing me win and get the achievement for it. I did end up winning! 😄

Ah, I admire battlers. I could never find the patience for slowly training up pets. I’ve had a few friends who haven’t been on also. I try to keep in touch now, but sometimes people come and go. I’m grateful to have gotten to know them in the first place, and it helps me be less sad. As for social anxiety, that’s hard. I’ve had a few friends with it and always try to reassure them I love messages, and will let them know if anything is an issue in our interactions. I know the challenge is psychological and not something telling people the right things will solve, though. Hope you’re getting the treatment you need.

Exactly! The corporate-ness really puts me off. I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing today because of how exploitative the whole in-game experience seems. And it’s targeted towards such young kids. Literary as opposed to technical translation, where the goal is conveying the artistic qualities of the original instead of just the meaning. Think translating a poem versus translating an instruction manual. I’m fluent in 3 languages and native-level in 2. I’m passionate about literary translation because one of my native languages has a glorious history, but is badly represented in my other native language. I translate because I look at other translations, having read the original, and find myself going, “ugh, this doesn’t get across anything it’s supposed to.” I only know a few words in Spanish, but understand Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s English translations are state of the art, but he’s honestly so brilliant the translations have to be also.
