I just quit my job in retail to go back to working with animals part time. I worked in retail for about a year and a half because it was accommodating for my school schedule. It was getting really stale and I missed my animals.

I'm so happy with my decision, I feel like I am doing what I'm supposed to be doing when I help animals and feel so much more fulfilled. Not once have I dreaded going to work since I got this job.

I'm a sterile compounding pharmacy tech who works 3rd shift (I mix IVs for 12 hours each night inside a clean room by myself) while also attending college online part-time. It gets pretty lonely sometimes but I'm an introvert lol so it doesn't really bother me. I listen to a lot of 80s music and make elaborate pyramids out of drug vials when its not busy, and when it is busy time flies. I work 7-on-7-off rotating shifts so I basically get a week of vacation every other week. I wish it paid more but it's great until I finish my degree.

I work a 9 to 5 for an online resale site, specifically with the secondhand jewelry. I really lucked out with this job, I get to spend time researching obscure things and I've learned so much about precious metals and stones. I got a great promotion about a month ago, my coworkers are all generally really cool people, and I have the best boss. The company has even brought up paying for me to get certified in gemology, which would open so many doors for me--not that I want to give this job up!

Wow, everyone has SUPER cool jobs, dang.

I'm a stay-at-home because I have crap health, so my spouse does most of the financial lifting haha. But I made soap for a while as a side job and that was REALLY fun and very rewarding.

We moved to a teeny apartment though to save money so I had to put that aside, so I'm doing watercolour paintings currently! It's not crazy lucrative by any means, but I can buy myself little trinkets or takeout and a video game here and there without guilt. <3 And it keeps my mind busy too, otherwise I'd go nuts.

✿ Have a wonderful day! ✿

TW//: Abuse by employer, dogs getting hurt (they're doing ok now don't worry), dangerous working conditions

I've worked in Several kitchens in the past. Chipotle, Bj's Brewhouse, then a super fancy retirement community kitchen. That last one was my favorite of my kitchen jobs. The food there was made for rich people so we got some of the fanciest leftovers that I could never dream of being able to afford. Also always got to take home lots of baked sweet potatoes every day. That job ensured I never went hungry, but the cost to my mental/emotional health as well as my physical health was too steep. Despite the crew being as supportive as they could be, cooperate wasn't so much so.

After leaving that job I tried changing pace a bit and started working at dog daycares. The first one of those..... well I'm surprised that place wasn't shut down. TONS of dogs were crowded into a space. Even with the addition of the outdoor space it was still crammed. Fights between dogs broke out near daily making it a dangerous environment for both the dogs AND the employees. The staff were overworked (making us all on edge and mistakes more likely to happen) The bathrooms were falling apart, The washer and dryer were broken meaning pee and feces stained blankets would just fester in piles for DAYS, Lots of sharp edges and TONS dust around so employees and dogs alike would get injured. I got a scar from hitting my shin against one of the kennels and one of my co-worker's lung collapsed (could have been some other issues, but being in that place for hours at a time certainly exacerbated the condition.) Another co-worker got his shin torn into and had to go to the ER. Other experiences I had was nearly getting my balls ripped off because I stumbled into a room with a room where a retired police dog was being isolated from the other dogs....due to her being a retired police dog and trained to attack suspicious looking individuals (aka people who looked like most of the employees and the new employees we'd get working there). They were suppose to Let new employees know where Maya (the ex police dog) was for their own safety. Maya was a very sweet dog once you were properly introduced to her as one would've introduced a fellow officer to her.

You see, at this place there wasn't any type of introduction test for new dogs coming in. They just took in any dog that came in. So we had a rating system there: +Blue dogs: These were dogs that got along fine with people and other dogs. We could just crowd them in with all the other ones. They spent the majority of the day chilling and playing with everyone. Only kenneled for feeding times, when we'd close up shop, and to let the other color coded dogs go outside to use the bathroom.

+Yellow dogs: These dogs were only slightly anxious. They could be let out of their kennels later on when things calmed down a bit, but had to be kept kenneled for the first little bit of letting the blue dogs out.

+Red dogs: These dogs DO NOT get along with other dogs (in some cases are known to bite people) or/and are SUPER ANXIOUS. These dogs are essentially kenneled the majority of the day and are let out one by one for a short period of time. Or if they're able be out with the other dog they have to be muzzled.

Another time during one of my first weeks working there I nearly got torn limb from limb when a fight broke out. A big chocolate lab that probably weighed as much as me if not more accidentally rolled over another's tail. Then a pitbull latched onto the scruff of her neck. I'm alone in the big dog room and I'm grabbing onto the Lab's collar (Her name was Lacey). I'm holding on for dear life as more dogs are piling into the conflict and shoving me around. I'm screaming at the top of my lungs for help because it's obvious that I'm in way over my head. Like not just a scream but like I've never yelled before. Like Raw and Primal screaming. But no one could hear me over the aggravated barking of all the dogs. Another dog piles in and knocks me off my feet and as I'm falling it's actually like the way they describe an adrenalin rush where the whole world slows down. "This is it," I'm thinking to myself as more dogs continue to pile in and I'm still holding onto Lacey's collar. "If the dogs don't panic and start biting at me, I'm going to be trampled to death." Out of the corner of my eye I see my co-worker's boot flying past me and then I'm hoisted back onto my feet an pushed towards the outside area with Lacey. Turns out my co-worker only heard the barking get louder and was able to recognize that some of the barking he heard was more panicked and aggressive than the normal barks and rushed in and pretty much had to drop kick the pitbull that was latched onto Lacey's neck. Don't worry this was a large and ripped pitbull he was alright at worst it only startled him and it was enough to get him to let go of Lacey long enough for my co-worker to get me back on my feet and out the door to a safer area. Surprisingly I came out of that pretty unscathed, except for I got bit on my pinkie at some point and was bleeding a tiny bit. There was another time where I had to shove my way through the yard with a corgi under my arm like a football with other dogs trying to jump up on and nip at the corgi and me. Believe it or not though the daily dog fights, dangerous conditions, ungodly hours, heavy workloads, and concrete floors with with no seating except some metal folding chairs wasn't what pushed me to quit that place. I was making $15 an hour hanging out and taking care of dogs all day. The dogs affection and their faces lighting up when they saw you actually offset a good portion of the stress. What got me to quit was actually dealing with my boss there. It was like pulling teeth to get her to remember to pay us or pay any bonuses she promised. She'd try and guilt trip me into working extra overnight shifts and her incompetence at scheduling would lead me to working overnight shifts RIGHT INTO MY MORNING SHIFT THE NEXT DAY![/b] Even worse, was what she'd pull when it came to paying me for the over night shift. She didn't tell me about this, but she was just paying a flat rate of $50 per overnight shift instead of the hourly rate of $15 an hour. The fool even conveniently "Forgot" that we had put in our two weeks noticed and called us in to work after our two weeks were up. I've got a ton of stories about that place, few of them good, a lot of them funny, but not for the best of reasons.

After that job my partner and I found another dog daycare. It was like night and day how much better run this new place was. Unfortunately it turned out the GM there had it out for me and I got blamed for a dog fight that broke out that wasn't my fault and written up on things I was in the process of course correcting (Like she legit just brought off the issues like a day or so before firing my partner and I). AAAaand then the covid-19 pandemic hit and we've been unemployed since.

I'm currently doing some side work rating ads and images for search and internet algorithms, doesn't pay anywhere as much, but it's something at least. My partner takes commissions to try and earn something currently.

Though, to be fair, most of the issues with this job are due to staffing/budget cuts. It wasn't quite so bad when I started. πŸ˜… Nevertheless, I'm job hunting at the moment.

I work in UX research and design. I can't turn off my brain when it comes to wanting to critique usability issues and bug identification when playing but at some point you just gotta chill, yeah? Deeply curious about subeta's team tbh, they have a lot of QoL stuff that other competitors seemed to be slow to adopt (although I confess it's been ages since I've looked at other similar sites). Props to them!
