Omg that is FANTASTIC news!!! ❤️ Time to volunteer for some overtime at work so I can buy like 50 name changes haha 8D
I know! I'd drop $40 easy. I've had to take my third or fourth or even tenth name choice and I'd LOVE to be able to get my first choices!
Which probably means more to me (somehow) than all of the known (and long forgotten) OC names I'll get to finally have.
I have been here 13 years and find it harder than ever to make SP unless I sink rl $ in to it because the economy never recovered after the CW's. I love the CW's as much as anyone but honestly I miss the old days when SP was king and was worth making!
As for the whole name thing, I'm all for it. I love my pet names but if someone else had it I wouldn't like the name any less.
will [pet=] work with the non unique naming convention? will it instead use the pets base ID?
My current leashed pet is a memorial pet. Mollygrl isn't the same as Molly. :c Changing her name is my priority. I would love to get another pet for my current cat too, though!
Holy shit. Are we actually getting rid of it. I would so throw 500 CSC at the site for a name change so I can have the name of my cat.

You have to pay premium currency to rename pets? That's gross. Considering you already have to pay premium currency for more space, it stings twice as hard.
I'm glad that staff don't like the unique naming system either. I'll probably check in now and then to see if that ever gets removed.
I'm also very glad that this discussion has been seen by staff. Maybe staff activity is sporadic here, but I'm on petsites where staff just aren't around. They never read the forums; suggestions fall into a black hole of hopelessness. So, flawed as Subeta is, this sporadic staff activity is probably what kept it going for so long.
Yes, and I've done it once when I really wanted my leashed pet. There are only two ways to get them for free: either you open a loyalty box, which you only get from your second year on, or if your pet's name was taken, in which you can change for free. Who knows though, maybe that's something that will change in the implementation of a non-unique system. In the very least, the latter way will go because nobody would be able to steal names anymore.
The fact that you have to ask though...
To be fair, most people just abandon and create a new pet unless it has good stats or a certain birthday/etc. Not ideal, but spending premium currency isn't required in most cases if you want a different name.
The premium currency is actually quite easy to earn with sP unlike other sites. I'm actually quite happy they do it this way (:
I'm also very happy with the news! I was actually not motivated anymore to work on my pets because I'm quite picky with names and the fact people actually complained I didn't do anything with a very popular fandom name and that I didn't deserve it because of it.
However now with this change I'm actually getting excited again to work again on my pets and be more active!!
You do understand subeta is a business and some things NEED to cost premium currency right? Otherwise they wouldn’t be able to operate.
You can also get an additional 15 pet slots in the millionaire centre as well as one a year in your loyalty box if that’s what you choose, so it’s not as if every pet slot costs USD.
And seeing as csc can be bought with sP you don’t HAVE to spend money on site. You can save up sP to buy any cash shop item or feature which is pretty awesome.
hey, don't worry. i have nagini as a pet and haven't done anything with her! if people get butthurt over not having a page for a fandom pet, then they just suck LOL
True! It just makes me laugh now when people say things like that to me. [edit] Not to forget those pet quest where you can get a free pet slot! (How long has it been we had one?)
My pets slots are like this: 0 from pet slot plushies and early totems (soft max 10) 0 from pet slot loyalty totems 0 from new slot additions (max 45) 1 from the Millionaire Center (max 15) 7 from awards and prizes
I got 7 free pets slots which is quite a lot!
I can only hope that the non-unique pet names bring a price cut with them for renames, nameswaps and pet slots. Along with better privacy options. 😕 I've had characters and coding stolen on Subeta before, and as much as I want to keep some confidence and show off my work to friends, I don't exactly want a repeat of all that crap. Especially when non-unique petnames are going to make it a lot easier for coding and character theft to get swept under the mass of identical petnames.
If Subeta is going to be presented as a proper replacement for Charahub, then it has to offer something of value to new users, not just old ones. One character slot for 15$, and 5$ to rename an existing character doesn't sound very appealing when so many other character repositories offer more for less money. I... also expect the pound absolutely flooded in the first months after the non-unique pet name system goes live. And lowID pets are going to be even more sought after by any users who want to have something special now that non-unique names will be gone.
The pets on Subeta are super cute and amazingly drawn, don't get me wrong. I just don't see non-unique petnames solving much after the buzz wears off, unless they come with extra tweaks. But I am hella down for being pleasantly surprised.
I feel you! I managed to get a glitched name pet that'll have to be renamed eventually and Pomeranian and, Kees. No chance at Cocoa, Hazelnut/Hazel/Hazy.. even Keeshond was taken. That has basically been the nail in subeta's coffin, for me, for a while now. Elated that hopefully in the near future I can just, have my babies names.
Sadly sub doesn't have much else for pet people to spend money in, outside of slots/renames/overlays so in a way I don't mind the cost; plus I remember the days when both cost a lot more. But you do bring up a good point regarding new users and the cost.
In the past years, there's been yearly quest-a-thons that awarded a free pet slot. As well as the yearly loyalty box. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing the base amount of pet slots upped if nothing else.
Honestly I'd love to see pet profile privacy. TH has the ability to make characters public/friends only/private and I would love to see something akin to that here; perhaps I'll make a board when/if non-unique names become a thing.
Just something that allows you to share the full profile or not. If not shared, other users would just see a blank profile (pet image/stats/side bar/etc), if shared the whole profile as coded is visible.
I wouldn't want to see it now, as there's a constant "hey I noticed x has a blank profile should you ever consider adopting it out" and being honest a lot of people try to gage inactivity based on profiles, but if possible I think it'd be a great feature.
YEAH, having a privacy toggle with the current petname mechanics would result in so much userbase salt. 😂 ngl, I'm hoping the new pet profiles roll out with the non-unique petnames. Having an option to toggle privacy for the different modular sections? Sign me up!
If it doesn't happen, feel free to @ me whenever you make that suggestion topic.
Wordvomit involving privacy options ahead
I can see why friends-only pet profiles could be a possible issue (people being assholes and stealing characters anyway, or putting really skeevy shit on their pet profiles). But if there's no privacy options for the new pet profiles with a non-unique name system, I'm moving all my stuff elsewhere and advising friends to do the same. Ain't nobody got time to be paranoid about character theft when I'm here to have a good time.
Hell, an age-restricted toggle and a trigger warning filter would also be neat. Several of my friends are already leery of putting even innocent things on their pet profiles purely because of the whole purity wank tumblr mentality that has spilled into nearly every corner of the internet. If I can put my "problematic" drunkards, murderers or abuse victim characters behind a trigger warning, privacy gate and age lock? That opens up a lot more comfort for those of us with characters that currently have to be diluted to fit into subeta's PG13-only guidelines (but somehow heavily implied incest is currently okay????).
If a user clicks on something that has a big ol' content warning, then gets pissy about it? It's kinda their own fault for ignoring the content warning. Y'all don't walk into a candy store while on a diet and throw a fit because there's candy displayed there.
If Subeta wants to offer more options for creative people and intends to draw those people in, imo it needs to stop smothering them with outdated rules and restrictions. Instead, offer us a way to moderate and gate our own content (but still no permissions for NSFW content onsite tho, for super obvious reasons).
[pet=] work with the non unique naming convention? will it instead use the pets base ID?I wonder if they can implement 's suggestion of pets being direct-linked with a URL thread of subeta.net/users/Cass/Draco, but the pets link being something like pet=cass/draco and link to your pet that way. I feel like that would be harder than I'm making its sound, though. I know nothing about coding. x: Pet ID would be the easiest solution but I'd love to see something that new users can easily get the hang of.
yeah with the ID being the base itd be super clunky, but I suppose having the un would also be clunky for those who are prone to changing UNs a lot. at least user ID is easier to link than pet.
though I foresee low IDs becoming ridiculously saught after/elite and I'm not sure how I feel about that one personally.
tbf, low IDs already are very sought after! o: there's a whole ping group for when they go UFA and i've adopted out several low IDs specifically for that purpose in the past. a lot of the people i've adopted these IDs out to also have what could be considered very well sought out pet names, as well. (no hard feelings to them AT ALL fwiw, just a thing to point out i guess that these things can go hand in hand) i guess personally i just view it (non-unique names) as one less thing to claim elitism over and i'm not entirely sure how much it'll effect the ID "market" so to say
i'm sure or could give better input on this tho LOL since they're the ones i'm often chucking IDs over to :B
Though it is possible people will move on to collecting IDs and perhaps even stir up drama over them, the ID doesn't really affect the character, tribute, or fan pet you're trying to make. While yes, a pet named Satan with an ID 666 and the IDs with birthdates could fit a character just perfectly it's just not as important (to me at least) as a name. So maybe to me, it's a case of, well IDs don't affect me personally so I don't care as much about people hoarding them. Whereas I feel name hoarding is a real issue that hinders the creativity, dampens spirits and culls one's inspiration to even work on a pet if the right name isn't available.
