I don't like it. If you have a ton of pets to train, and I certainly do, that extra bit of scrolling adds up from a tiny occasional inconvenience to a big fat pain.

Training your pets at the Training Center in Riverside already is scroll-intensive. Training itself is slow and strategic, so there is no need to get immediately back to any other Battle feature. Even if you just complete a round of training, stat-improvements here on Subeta aren't done by step-function, they are on a continuous curve. It's not going to suddenly matter.

I have a separate beef with this because us battlers one of our first interactions with when they first came to work on-site was to modify how this page worked to reduce scrolling. Unless it was needed for smooth site function, this modification should have been Suggested and discussed first. If it got added to the small site improvement thread as if it was a no-brainer site improvement, it shouldn't have been.

I think it just needs a tweak. If the font size was made smaller, it would look less chunky.

I agree with Solsticesprite and Frost.

During battle quests the banner at the top of the page that reads "Battle Navigation" is responsible for the need to scroll on every turn. This doesn't sound like much but when you do 30 quests per day it really adds up. It's awkward and doesn't merit the inconvenience it causes.

If it were made smaller or changed where it didn't cause unnecessary scrolling it would be ok.

My first thought was that I appreciated having the "Spend Exp" and "Healer" links available on the training page. Then I had to scroll down to train, which was a nuisance.

Maybe is right and that it only needs a tweak, but I suspect small tweaks aren't going to prevent the need to scroll.

It's more annoying on mobile than on desktop for me, but like OP said, the scrolling is definitely an annoying part of training no matter what.

I'm going to be shameless and plug my own suggestion thread for making training easier and less scroll-heavy for people with many pets because the scrolling was annoying even before the navbar was added, and afaik there's no way to remove Jim's training center text and the level cap warning even if you hide his image. ._.

It's intrusively huge. I tried to shrink it down to reasonable size using custom CSS, but seem to have inadvertently shrunk a lot of other text as well.

I mean, I can kind of get why is there on some pages (Jim's main page, battle quest main and subpages.), but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense on others where it just serves to be huge, intrusive, make the page longer, and generally not be pointing to where I'm going next (in battle, at the stats earned and set alert/return to Jim page). This makes it come off as quickly slapped on rather than thought through. And like Solsticesprite points out, some site layout changes were made with the reason that scrolling is bad and must be reduced, but here we have a set of links added to some pages where they do nothing but add additional scrolling because the link bar makes no sense in the page context.

yeah, custom CSS can help, but only so much. At one point I toyed with making the page show the pets horizontally and that helped the scrolling, but introduced other problems. Nor would it be helpful for mobile.

On my PC I could access the first 4 pets without scrolling, now I can't.

I can access the first 4 pets fine on desktop, but I have a fairly large screen resolution so that plays in my favor. On my phone (after rotating it horizontally), it cuts off after the "Also, Autotraining trains your pet for 24 hours" part of the warning message and I have to scroll a full screen length down to actually get to my pets. And that's with customCSS that resizes training center pet images to 100x100px.

Sadly I have bad eyes and can't change my view options. So its really annoying that the new nav makes my PC cut off just below the speed stat.

(oh and interesting suggestion thread you linked above.)

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that, but I understand.

The navbar is useful, but it could really use tweaks to adjust the size of it. iirc, it wasn't this big before it was added to the training center and BQs, but my memory's not exactly stellar quality so take that with a grain of salt. :'|

Maybe give the option to hide the menu? Like how spoilers are, that way you can have the page back as it was but still have access to the links if you need them?

Thanks for the feedback! The navbar was added because it makes sense that anything linked in the navbar also has it. It's an attempt to bring the battle pages together.

We're looking at ways to make it smaller/less obtrusive, and brainstorming other ways to help with the scrolling issue on that page in particular. I think we can find ways to mitigate this without sacrificing the navigation links :)

I don't think the actual battle page is an appropriate place for them to even be. What does having the links there do? Why would we leave that page mid-battle? If the argument is we're going to use them to open another browser tab to the healer, why is this better than opening one before entering the battle or from the battle results page?

The current design of the battle page was pretty much all about hiding everything in tiny scroll boxes to eliminate/reduce scrolling on the page itself, and this just adds length to the page without much, if any, real use.

It definitely needs to be smaller. I don't understand why the font needs to be bigger than the standard font size on the rest of the page, especially when the links on those pages are standard size. Is it being over fussy if I think it doesn't even look good?

I'm not at the point where scrolling is that bad, but I can definitely see where people would be annoyed if I was training 40+ pets and I was there multiple times a day.

Off-the-wall idea: for all the questgivers and NPCs like Jim, would it be feasible to have their picture and textblurb hideable? Like how we can collapse sections of the sidebar when we don't need them? If Jim's whole screed of text "Welcome to the Training Center! Hey there! I'm Jim and etc" wasn't there then that would hugely reduce scrolling. Same for questgivers like Quentin and Cursed who have several paragraphs of flavourtext that you read once and then ignore ever after.

Give them their own drop-down menu at the top? There's enough related links to justify it. Put it between "Commerce" and "Personal", perhaps, and call it "Battle"? That is, unless you guys are planning to ditch them on the recode.

I'd prefer to see a link to a central hub rather than have every possible link listed out on each page. Subeta's menus keep trending in this direction, and (imo) it's getting more and more cumbersome to get around.

I think there are only four things needed for the battle navigation:

Coliseum Home, Training, Healer, Battle Quests

These are spread around the site and take time to navigate between normally, so a nav bar to tie them together makes sense.

If you really had to expand it, I could see Spend Exp and Armory/Scrolls added, but that's as far as I would go.

Beginner Guide, In-Depth Guide, Statistics, and Boss Prizes aren't accessed frequently enough to justify having them on every single page. And that leaves Battle Shop, which I don't personally use often enough to need immediate access to it, but maybe other people do?

Generally speaking, I think if your nav bar spills onto a second (or third) line, you've got too much going on and need to rethink things. Either cut some fat or convert the whole thing to a dropdown menu.

That's a good point. Could you please clarify how you see those four main "sections" working? If we cut down to those four links, there will be no links anywhere to the battle guides, boss prizes, spend EXP page, etc. Are you thinking of having (for instance) the Coliseum section have its own separate navbar for just coliseum stuff, or... how are you envisioning having links to all of those other pages?

I think you're right that too many links ends up being cluttered and cumbersome, and even makes it harder to find what you're looking for visually. I like your idea of categorizing the links into sections like that - I wonder if we could have some sort of slider thing to make it take up less horizontal space, where it shows the 4 sections (with one open by default) but you can click on another to open the links under that section instead. (Kind of like a dropdown but it would work better on mobile/touchscreens than what our current dropdowns do.)

(The next update is just going to make the menu a little smaller and take up less vertical space, but this is something we can keep developing for sure :) There's also some training center QoL stuff incoming that I hope will help everyone with the scroll issue!)

- I guess I was thinking of a central hub page for the coliseum that would include all those extra links, kind of like the games page. It would add an extra click/page load to get to most of those places, but how often do people need direct access to Boss Prizes or the guides? I think in those cases the extra click is a fair trade-off for decluttering everything.

For something like Challenge Opponent, moving it from the nav bar to a new hub page shouldn't even add an extra click in most cases, because there's already a link to it at the end of every battle, which is when you'd most often need the link anyway. Same with Armory and Scrolls, which both have links on the battle config page before a fight. (So you'd have access to these pages from multiple locations, without the need for extra nav bar links.)

Spend Exp could probably also use a direct link in Jim's blurb in the training center, so you could access it either from there or through the Coliseum Hub.
