Are you visiting Russia, or do you live there as well?

Dude!! I am so completely jealous! My husband has just retired after 33 years of teaching, we are moving eventually to North Carolina, due to my dad's health, but if he doesn't need us right away I would love to live and work overseas for a couple of years. I don't even care where we go, I want to see it all. lol

Well, first and foremost Thank-you for your service! And how come and how sad is it that it's easier to say that to someone that you can't actually see?! Secondly, I realized after I sent the last post that I totally forgot to say Congratulations on your marriage!! I hope that you both will be very happy;) I was the long term substitute teacher last year for our Spanish teacher who was having some health issues (I do not speak Spanish) so I had to do something, a friend suggested (and it really worked) signing the kids up for an online program called Duolingo. You can also do Russian and it's free.

did you know about google translator? You can type in language you know and it will translate in another language in writing. Plus it will say it out loud to person your trying to talk with. Plus you can save phrases you use frequently. I use it with my in laws. Plus it has a camera you can line up on a sentence in language you don’t know and it will immediately translate into language you know.

I'm 62 and happy that i can say that i can still travel and able to learn. I've been studying on-line for free for the last yr now. It isn't an easy language. I've been asked to teach English in a private school. :) Think i would like to try it. I've already toured the school. Yes i've used this for 2 yrs now. :) thanks It is not always so good at the Russian language translations.

Thanks, it's pretty good so far! :)

I don't know about google translator but Duolingo let me create "classrooms" for the kids that they could register for and then I could track/see what they were doing, so six classes, 60+/- kids all for free. They did little lessons, could take a placement test so they didn't have to start right at the beginning if they weren't first year students, etc. Kids could progress at their own rates, or do extra work if they wanted to, very nice.

Good to see you, hope you have a great dinner and good luck with the "in-laws";)

It translates Egyptian Arabic perfect for the first time, I had a conversation with one of my sister in laws without one of my nieces or nephews or hubby translating. I really enjoyed using it.

I know a few words in German, I was stationed in Germany the year the Berlin Wall went down in 1989. I am so lucky to have a German bakery a few blocks from my house. So you know my anxiety being in a room, where everyone is talking and sometimes they dont translate and talk over me. I feel like what the heck am I doing here. Supposedly, they come to visit me, and dont talk to me or no conversation unless someone translates for me. I didnt hear of duolingo before it was mention here. But if it can me used to help students, it has to be great.

You can do Duolingo for Arabic as well. Think how surprised they would be the next time they visit and you can say "Hi, how are you! It's do good to see you" and so on without having to use a translator. I mean you might not become fluent (or maybe you could) but you could get the basics at least.

Some arabic words have different pronunciation depending on your gender. I have used the male version of a word, everyone is kind and just over look my lack of knowledge, and give me credit for just trying.

And supposedly English is the most difficult language to learn! Man that sounds hard!

Well I dont agree, arabic is very hard. Not only that they read and write from left to right. What we consider the back of the book, that is the starting page of a book for them.

That's just like Japanese-my daughter and I read a lot of manga, and even translated the books are printed backwards and have to be read that way;)

So you understand sometimes I feel like my brain is being squeezed in a vise, just listening and trying to learn. Sometimes I have to just shut down, because it gives me a headache. Like listening for hours to another language whether through conversations, music or tv and I feel like my head is going to blow off my shoulders. So its good, I can talk english to hubby, nieces and nephews. It balances it out for me.
