(and anyone else who wants to talk books!) great! I have read a book by Ilona Andrews, it's been a long while, it was their first book I think. I don't remember it hardly at all. I'll check out some of their more recent works.
I think my current favorite author of that kind of thing that you describe as paranormal maybe is Seanan Mcguire. But I have read a reasonable amount of it. I liked pretty well the ones by Kim Harrison. I've read ones by Kelley Armstrong and by Charlaine Harris that were made into TV shows... both I got tired of by book 6 or so. It seems like some series writers start repeating themselves and dwelling on the parts of their stories I like least, and it gets old for me. Mcguire repeats herself too, but she focuses more on the parts I like, I guess.
Another author I really like, whose work might be considered paranormal (or maybe it's science fiction... or something else), is Claire North. But her writing is way less similar to the Hamilton format.
Oooh now I have read some info on your 'my commander' book you mentioned, the books I liked that had something like this in it was the Parasol series (starting with Soulless) by Gail Carriger. She also has a lot of humor in her works. So I think you might like that series. (Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, and Timeless)
I have to say that the "my commander" quotes on the goodreads page didn't make me want to read it... Meryn is maybe too crude for me, all the quotes have her using horrible language. But the wacky other reviews made me think I might like it despite that so... if I get in that sort of mood I'll give it a try.
To go back to the book I'm reading that brought up the discussion, it is set partly in the real world (ish) and partly in other worlds. It is set in a city and has no people but human people. The time period is the early 20th century (1920ish? if I knew more about English monarchs I might know more exactly. George V is king and really old). It has magic which is partly mind power and partly not. But there are (so far) no shapeshifters and so I am not sure if it is paranormal or fantasy or in-between?
I've done less than 250 damage to him so far. I'm just hoping for some tiny consolation prize for trying.
yay extra day and extra pet slot for all

Another day of extra mil from quests whoop whoop!!
Hey girl how are you today?

[center] 🌹 👻 Sept
OH YES!! Love Gail Carriger!! really like her new series ??Poison and something? heh don't remember off hand. (Poison and Protect!) but i do have all of those that you mention! and i've got 2 of her "babys book" (the daughter Pru) for some reason, i wasn't able to get into those as much, but it could be i "wasn't in the mood"
and PLEASE. give My Commander a chance! (unless bad language offends you highly) i didn't think it was so bad. and it was really "natural to the conversation" Like when something happens to you, and you shout "SH*T" lol /well. maybe YOU Don't. i do/ :D
and seriously. when the "females" send the "boys" off to the local convenience store. OMG!! make sure you're not drinking any thing, and don't have to pee. SO FUNNY. (in each of the books, even though they are about "different couples" all the couples are in the same "house" with Aiden and Meryn being the "alphas", and each time the 'guys' have to go to the store, whether for tampons, or diapers it's ALWAYS Hilarious) There's another book by author S. E. Smith (Choosing Riley) that does the same thing to me. i ALWAYS laugh at a couple of parts of that story doesn't matter how many times i've re-read it. (but Smith's books are heavy sex)
I've read some of the authors that you've mentioned. Haven't really been able to get into them so much. used to love C.Harris, but now, it's "eh" (even though, i have saved a couple of the Midnight Texas on my dvr. but i've never read those books)
If you like Carrington, you might want to check out the author Cindy Spencer Pape (Steam & Sorcery: The Gaslight Chronicles book 1) it's another "steampunk paranormal" like GCarrington.
and DEFINITELY check Amanda Quick (if you never have. she's BIG author) she writes under 3 different pen names, but her A Quick is back in the "victorian 1800's world" but its a "paranormal mystery" type. Especially her "Arcane Society" series. (Second Sight . or With This Ring-Vanza book 1) The Arcane Society books are cool, because they travel "through time" her author name Amanda Quick does the 1800's her author (and real name) Jayne Ann Krentz, does "now a days/contemporary" and her author name, Jayne Castle, does "future/another world" (AND DUST BUNNIES!! :D lol)
oh. Meljean Brook, another 'steampunk victorian world' (absolutely love The Kraken King....series is "Iron Seas")
also. if you really want a "story" author M.C. Rogers Blood of Ancients: book 1 of Tides of Empires i'm still waiting for the second book to come out. it's a book, that i normally wouldn't go to, because each chapter is about a different person (then back to the 1st person, etc) and i don't like those types of books. but i swear. it took me less than 3 chapters for that book to GRAB ME AND NOT LET GO. i couldn't put it down! the story was SO DAMN GOOD. :D
ok. got to go and do some quests. :D (lol if i don't get distracted again)
and i've only got about 80 thou on that stupid Hydraguywhateverhisnameis. ACK!
I am very fond of the "different narrator per chapter" type of book actually. The whole title of that Rogers book is riddled with cliche but that is not too great an obstacle. But I can't seem to find anything reviewish about her work ? Nothing but a few 5* reviews on Amazon. Is it very new?
I've read a reasonable amount of Quick's work in her various pseudonyms, they're OK. Her work is too formulaic for my taste (it's right in that romance novel vein) but she does a good job with it. I have the sci fi Castle series, just haven't got around to reading it, haven't been in that mood... eventually I probably will.
I got "My commander" and opened it up, read the first few pages. The concept that the guy is an Alpha because their military squads are called Alpha, Beta, Gamma is great fun. So the author's got definitely a likable sense of humor about things. On the other hand, the book so far (page 3 or so) is in horrible need of editing. Missing commas, comma splices, and awkward phrasings and unbelievable physical maneuverings are keeping me from getting into the story flow.
"He swung his legs over the bed and leaned forward, elbows on his knees, face in his hands. He tried to shake off the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Sighing he sat up and scrubbed his hands over his face. He stood and decided against taking a shower, they were doing drills today, and he would be sweaty and rank in less than an hour anyway."
I can't read a paragraph like that - it has all of the above. How can you shake anything off in that position he took in sentence 1? How can you be in that position and not have already sat up? The "sighing he sat up" should obviously be "He straightened up with a sigh" instead or, possibly, "Sighing, he sat up straight" because you use "he sat up" to mean sit up from lying down, not sit up straight from being slumped. Of course, if this is the author's first book maybe it gets better? I can slog through a bit more of this to give it a chance, but tell me she gets an editor or fixes it herself in later books?
Lovely outfit! :) I like the color fade :O
Doing alright. Could have slept today lol Its rainy today cause of the hurricane
(damn my computer! heh. just wrote out a whole page, and then something happen, it went back a page, and I LOST all that i had written!) heh.
ok. lets see. what did i write...
oh. yah.
I guess i should have warned you about the Commander book. i'm not sure, but i think these are her first books, and they are not edited very well. (i've gotten so "into" the story, i hardly notice any more)
(heh. i can see right now, that you are very similar to and must hate speaking with me. lol. spelling/puncture/etc go down the drain with me, the faster my brain goes and my fingers fly)
IRL i talk really fast also. lol. (especially when i get excited about something)
:( I hope you don't dislike the Commander book to much, that you can't get through the story. If so. then I'm really sorry I suggested it to you.
and with the Rogers book, it's been out about 2 years. I think it was a "self published" book also. (considering the cover) but it was such an attention grabbing story, that I can't help but suggest it to people.
(heh. besides. i know the author. and I think you know the author also. but i'm not saying who. till you at least read a sample of it) :D
and i wouldn't worry about the Castle series. it sounds like you probably wouldn't enjoy them so much. and yes on your opinion on her as writing as Quick. (when you've read as much as I do, most of her stories "run together". in fact, there are a couple that, except for characters, they are almost the same thing)
No rain here, thankfully! Just finished my quests! Have you been keeping up with the gelatin war?
Trying to DX I have about 40k into the big boss and knocked out 500 little jellys this week. Still don't have half the achievements for it all though DX how bout you? Hard enough to keep up with the quests!
I got the top tier for Golems, Gelaturtle & Gliders. Still need a few achievs for the minis.. but they were all gone this morning when I woke up! I haven't racked up much damage on the big boss either x.x
don't be sorry! I can't find new things to like if I don't try - I don't expect to like everything (I'm far too picky). Also I think my husband will like this, so it won't go to waste. He likes anything with military stuff in it, especially romance with military and fantasy or sci fi elements. He has none of my pickiness about grammar. (His grammar is horrible. Beyond horrible. He has no idea even where periods go at the end of sentences. He is like, how do you know when the sentence is over?)
I'm not sure if I will like it or not but either way I'm glad to have tried it out.
I don't think I'm going to try the Rogers one though... it looks too undercooked at this time. I'll wait and if the author writes more and gets a bigger reputation, I'll give another look then.
My favorite romance author way above all the rest was Roberta Gellis. She later wrote some paranormal romance too, and some mysteries. My favorite of her paranormal romance novels is "Shimmering Splendor" which is the 2nd in a series that starts with "Dazzling Brightness" and has five books total. It's about some mages who were (in this series) the origin of the Greek pantheon, and they are retellings of various myths as paranormal romance. I love the worldbuilding and the characters.
As for steampunk - I'm not a huge fan of it - I don't mind it, but it's way overrated. The important things to me about books are - 1, characters, good characterization, character driven plots, believable and consistent characters. That's my biggest thing. 2, good writing, at least don't stop me every 2 sentences to boggle at your lack of grammar (sorry!) and really beautiful wordsmithing will be a bonus. 3. Originality is good, at least lampshade the cliches (like the Alpha being a squadron, I love that) and ideally subvert them a bit if you're going to use them. And make me at least doubt that the end is what I thought it would be after 2 pages. Good worldbuilding is part of this, make it possible to imagine it's a real place with rules that make sense given the magic and whatever existing; and lastly 4. Positive feelings... I don't really like super negative books or ones that are too upsetting, heightened suspense, anxiety producing. I read to calm down so the soothingness of a book is a positive to me - of course I don't mean no conflict at all, that would be boring, just not raising the stakes to the point where I have to put it down and chill for an hour before I can read the next sentence would be lovely :D
editing
OMG I missed something important Witchy!! I know the author? that makes a huge difference... I mean, I like reading stuff by people I know. So maybe this will change my mind?
Also, I don't expect people to get an editor for their message board posts! I don't even use totally correct grammar in mine, LOL. it's a board post. no need to worry. A novel is different... I expect higher standards when I pay for it ;)
I've never heard of any of those except Wal-Mart and Kroger. :-P
Awww! I knew she was older, but 14, she is doing well! :-)
I'm sorry you're feeling down! :-( virtual hugs
I love your new HA!!
Hey stranger! How are you?
Oh good! I'm glad you appreciate at least part of your figure!! :-) I used to think I had such a horrible figure and I found an old pic of myself, and it even looks like I'm trying to hide myself with my arms, but I would kill to have it back! LOL
oh. that's to bad about Rogers book. especially if you like "wordsmithing" (they do have a free sample. maybe try that?
does your hubby know about Michael Anderle? he does this "short book" (very fast read, more a novella) i got it, because i thought it was going to be more "romance" and even though there is a 'hint' of it, it's more "militaristic" (starts out with "Death Becomes Her") and there are other writers that he as gotten into his "world view" that have continue on with some of his characters, making their own stories/books. it's a scifi genre.
ha. you like Carrington, but you say you don't like steampunk? :D Ok.
I just started battling last year so I am kinda behind DX
Yep she had a blast. Walked and chased the ball. She was worn out yesterday
How are you feeling? With all of your working out, are you still sore?
I don't dislike steampunk... I find it doesn't matter to me one way or the other if something's steampunk, that's all. I just don't find steampunk that good, or that bad, it's a random accessory to me, not something I look for especially or avoid -- I like Carriger's stories a lot, mostly for the characters and the humor.
Some of it is rather nonsensical. Carriger's is too, but the nonsense works for the style she's writing in, if that makes sense. For more serious works, steampunk can be done well but often it just isn't.
Since you know the writer, maybe you can get me a sample? a chapter or something? :D
Also thanks SO much to you and for cheering me up by talking books to me. It has meant a lot and I appreciate it TONS
feeling better due to chatting about books :D
:D i can almost always talk books, . and I understand (about the steampunk)
amazon has a free sample for download. I'm guessing you have a tablet? it will download right to that. I'd "loan" it to you (amazon allows that with certain books) but I loaned the book out, it's suppose to be automatically returned after 2 weeks. but when i went to download it to re-read, it's telling me it "can not download a book on loan" so i'm going to have to contact amazon, and get that fixed. heh. the only reason i say you should at least try the sample, is because, i admit, when i first saw the book, I thought, "well, it's only 4 dollars. i'll buy it because this is a friends book" but geeze. like i said. as soon as i start reading it, i couldn't put it down. it drew me in that hard and fast. HER WRITING IS OUTSTANDING. seriously. i have a very vivid imagination. (and it's really easy to make me cry!! SERIOUSLY! Andy Griffith show with Opie can make me cry!!) grin. /commercial break.... i was at work, one day, and every one took a "ciggy break". we used to all gather in the womens bathroom, SIT on the floor, and chat. They started talking about the movie...shoot.... very popular....with Cher in it, MASK! and about the boy, and the map, and the places he wished he could go... and I started CRYING! I mean. Seriously CRYING. of course. they all laughed at me. i'm such an idiot. :D ....commercial break over/
any way. i was fascinated with her writing. it was like "this should be a 14$ book!"
any way. that's Just MY OPINION. :D
ok. i'm off to eat some left over pizza. and to die some more from Hydrawhat'shisname.
:D
