Aya, the smallest of my pups from my first litter, is mute and uses a little note pad to write notes, or she uses American Paw Sign to speak to those who have also been trained. The other day, she was pondering some aspects of our language and came up with these questions....

If a mute swears, is her mother supposed to wash her paws off with soap? How can there be self-help "groups"? Is there another word for synonym? Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice"? Why is a pear called a pear when there is only one? When sign makers go on strike, is there anything written on their signs? If you try to fail, and succeed, what have you done? Why does the word monosyllabic contain five syllables? Why is abbreviated such a long word? Why is there an 's' in lisp? If you were scared half to death twice, would you be 3/4 dead or 100% dead? If a male is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no female around to hear him, is he still wrong?

What if there were no hypothetical questions? Is hyperbole the worst mistake you can possibly make?
