There! I finished all the gifting (I think, gosh I hope I haven't forgotten anyone) and went a little crazy, so I'm glad there's a quest-a-thon going on so I can make some extra money to gift even more people :D

I will keep Tolkien on my list then. I heard some stories about how it's hard to get through and that he describes everything and how that's distracting, so I was a little afraid to start because I do not want to hate it! I kinda have to read the books that were written after his death though, because I really want to know how it ends? My brother in-law said that half-way through it got a little stale and that after his death the pace picked up again, do you agree with that?

I am sure you're right about the best fantasy being written by mostly unknown writers c: I'm always mesmerized at the world these writers manage building.

Me too! Well after I finish questing, but I'm not really done with gifting. I think I'mma go through the forums and do the 'gift the tree above' threads. They seem like fun.

And what book would your brother-in-law be talking about? Because both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were written by JRR Tolkien himself during his lifetime. The Silmarillion was also written by him, but published after his death by his son Christopher Tolkien. Everything that was published after Tolkiens death was written by him actually. There are still thousands of papers left to catalogue (he had the habit of writing on every available paper piece he could find) and those are being published even to this day. But that does not mean he didnt write them. :) It is true that the books are old, the Hobbit is from 1937! And that means that the words and overall feeling can be a bit long and heavy, but to me that is just part of it's charm. Every sentence written is layered with meaning and was choosen very carefully by Tolkien. The way he created Middle-earth, with so much feeling and indeed description is really jaw-dropping. It is what all other fantasy writers have been doing since. And I am way getting into this again! Talking about Tolkien is a non-stop thing for me, lol!

My brother-in-law has various opinions and I've been realizing more and more that most of those opinions are coming from what he heard others say. I doubt he read it himself, so I probably shouldn't even take his opinion into consideration.

You're totally getting into it c: I wish I had read Tolkien myself so I could get into it with you, but for now I'll just have to admire your passion and get me some copies of his books.

Aha, next time you can give your brother-in-law an answer back he won't be expecting. ;) Yeah, I do get a bit carried away when it's about Tolkien. But I just love his works so much and I love talking about it! I would have to be, it is sort of madantory since I am the president of the Flemish Tolkien Society. ^_^

Oh, aren't they great! I do love those books, though I have to admit that my favourite work of Tolkien is the Silmarillion. And with this time of year I love re-reading the Letters to Father Christmas.

I haven't heard about Letters to Father Christmas. sounds interesting.

It is a wonderful childrens book. It is actually a collection of 'letters' that Tolkien wrote to his own children as Father Christmas (Santa Claus). There is a really funny one about a penguin and a polar bear. :)

I will have to see if I can get it from the library.
