What do you need help with --- Copypasting a few questions from my wife. She has autism and is a professional comic-book artist, so she is very confused about some of the things said. Here's her questions that I was asked to relay for her.

lineart - literally traced over the base itself to check my lineart settings for my brush and it matched (link), used straight black for the lines, and they were very non-specific when they said 'shaky, rough, or inconsistent' and it doesn't tell me which one of the three it is which leaves me to guess, and I don't know how to fix it because it looks very consistent to me? I'm not sure where a line-weight issue or inconsistency is, so having it pointed out or redlined would be very helpful. shading - they mentioned the contrast looked like it was color-burned or dodged, but I used a lighter color for the shading then multiplied it, and went over the top with lightly colored highlights instead of straight white, and although I've been told the artwork looks muddy, I'm not sure how to improve because I don't see it. Can I have it pointed out? also shading - it's supposed to be a dark brown, so how am I supposed to make it look dark but also high-contrast enough to be readable at small scale without it looking lighter than intended? lineart again - how do I get more detail in than what they're asking for when the current level of detail is literally ripped from a pair of my own headphones (which my husband showed in his upload as a reference), and how do I translate that detail onto such a small canvas?

Was there a denial --- ITEM AND OVERLAY: Artwork does not match Subeta style, quality, or level of detail in general ITEM AND OVERLAY: Shaky, rough, or inconsistent lineart ITEM AND OVERLAY: Not enough layers of shading (Subeta artwork should have 3-5 layers of shading) ITEM AND OVERLAY: Dodge/burn look or too much contrast in shading NOTES: Thank you for including further information with the resubmission! Unfortunately these currently just don't match Subeta style as far as artwork goes. They almost look like they're shaded with black, and lack the multiple layers of shading/highlighting and smooth lineart we see in Subeta-style artwork. Getting some help from some more experienced CW artists may help achieve the Subeta look better!

Optional Can we take a look at the PSD files --- I would allow it if I had the PSD files, but they got merged at the end due to an accidental save, so we'll have to redo them, but if asked to, we absolutely can reproduce them and have you look at them, yes! Can we redline --- PLEASE, YES. Please.

hi !

A couple quick questions : what program did your wife use to draw, and what was the canvas size? I'd be happy to help, and the lineart in particular may be tied to the canvas size.

Thanks!

What do you need help with --- Hi guys! I'd really appreciate some help with this. I've tried, unsuccessfully, for years to get my own CWs onsite, but every denial I give up for years at a time, heh.... Well, with this one I was sure I had gotten it down but still, denied! It's been a good few years since my last attempt, so long ago infact the mod believes this is my first attempt hah. But that's all good and fine. Please could I have some help with this! No rush, enjoy your lumi first, I just want to get this on here whilst I have a moment to actually do so. Thank you in advance! Username ---

Was there a denial --- ITEM AND OVERLAY: Artwork does not match Subeta style, quality, or level of detail in general OVERLAY: Pillow shading OVERLAY: Gradient or soft shaded instead of cel-shaded ITEM: Dithering and/or save quality issues ITEM AND OVERLAY: Item name does not follow standard capitalization format

Thank you for including notes! While this is a really good first attempt at a custom wearable, it just lacks the overall refinement and seamless blending of Subeta style that we look for with CWs. The item has some dithering issues, especially in the hair parts. The hair itself is rather airbrushed looking, giving it the 'pillow' shading mentioned in the denials. Wigs are one of the hardest things to do CWs of, so I do recommend checking out this thread: https://subeta.net/forums.php/read/858111/-CW-Denial-Help-Thread- and getting some advice from experienced CW submitters!

Optional Can we take a look at the PSD files --- yes/no (Only because I work on procreate and I'm unsure how to get the "raws" easily online) Can we redline --- yes/no

Would you mind posting the working size of your images? I'm going to guess that it could be a variety of problems, but I can't confirm if I don't know what the full size image looks like. If you're not comfortable posting that though, here are some possibilities to look into:

  1. Too many details in one small area. This can make an area look jagged / sharpened / dithered. If your program has a 'preview' window where you can open up a preview of your image and then zoom out so you can see what the final size looks like as you work, I recommend using that as it's very helpful.
  2. Too sharp of a brush. If your brush is too crisp this can further lead to the resize looking even crisper.
  3. Are you merging your working size before resizing? In some programs, not merging can cause the image to tear a bit since it is trying to size each layer separately instead of 'as one image' and this can make edges of some layers look funky / wrong.
  4. What size are you working at? I always recommend only working in an easily divisible number (so 128x128 for item images for example). I also recommend not making your canvas massive either (so not something like 384x384 for an item image) because the larger you make the canvas, the more details you may try to pack in that will get eaten / cause issues on resize.

(You can also smail me if you'd prefer not to post your working sizes in the public forum, I'm okay with that too!)

I posted this on the official CW forum, and want to remove it, but I am SERIOUSLY bothered but this denial.

just venting The resubmit didn't work. I had to start over on the create page, and accidentally didn't check the resubmit button (that was checked on the resubmit page that didn't go through). 😢

The first submission ("create") has a different name than the second submission, but on the second denial it says: [box=#eeddcc]Please resubmit this attached to your FIRST submission.[/box] Now I do not know which name to use on this second Resubmission. The wording under the Item Name on the resubmission page is as follows: [box=#eeddcc]Enter the item name from your last submission for this item. If you are editing the item name in this resubmission, make sure you enter the PREVIOUS name here. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the system is not able to find the correct denial for this resubmission, leave this box unchecked and specify it in the submission notes.[/box]

ESPECIALLY because the resubmit page, wherein the resubmit button is automatically CHECKED, hasn't been working.

This is my first CW and I so wanted it out for tree gifting or at least while the holidays were still going on. :(

Hopefully this helps:

[quote=Now I do not know which name to use on this second Resubmission. The wording under the Item Name on the resubmission page is as follows:] "Enter the item name from your last submission for this item. If you are editing the item name in this resubmission, make sure you enter the PREVIOUS name here. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the system is not able to find the correct denial for this resubmission, leave this box unchecked and specify it in the submission notes."

So it looks like they require the PREVIOUS item name when resubmitting, that way they can tie the new CW submission in with the previous one. I posted a thread in the problems/bugs regarding the resubmission page not working - BUT luckily all we have to do, until that's fixed, is create a NEW submission page then select "this is a resubmission!".

I'm sorry you're frustrated. The CW submission process can be tedious but it's necessary. They usually suggest we submit gifts/holiday items ahead of time to avoid any frustration regarding the inability to gift things on time. That's on us (for anyone wondering I drew the CW for her) for doing it very last minute.

It is totally on me! But because the information says there is a 9 denial limit, I wasn't figuring I would have to submit it that many times: Like 9 is WOW, months of resubmitting! Previous name was confusing, because the resubmit was a different name to keep MT head on straight, so re-resubmit with the previous name/original name, ¯(ツ)

I saw where it said to leave the name open. I was afraid that would be grounds for another denial.

I try. Hopefully this will go through. If not... oh well.

Don't be hard on yourself! CWs take a bit to get used to for everyone that's new to the system. This is your first one so there's bound to be some hiccups; I dealt with the same thing when I first started submitting CWs too. ❤️

Wife used Clip Studio Paint, the items themselves were drawn at the required size of 64 x 64, and the wearable itself visible on the HA was drawn in 125 x 250, also the required size! I hope this helps. Sorry for the slow response; she needed some time before she was ready to try again, so I waited to answer this question until she wasn't too burnt-out!

thank you so much - and no worries at all!

For the working canvas, it is highly suggested to atleast double the size of the final image!

So for overlays, it would be 250x500 (or more), and for CIs it would be 128x128 (or more).

This is because when you draw on a larger canvas and then size down, it compresses the pixels to give them a smooth look. I knew an artist who drew on 400x800, and another who drew on 500x1000. Personally, I like to keep my overlay working file to 250x500 because drawing bigger makes you want to add a lot of small details that will end up practically invisible once resized to the final 125x250 look.

Here are a few examples of working size > final size (open image to see the full view!)

I think just drawing on a bigger canvas and then resizing will help a lot with some of the denials like inconsistent lineart and burnt shading.

On the examples, you can see the lineart thickness + what it looks like when resized. If you're unsure, I can also stream some examples with you / your wife if a visual example would be better <3

Dont let go, it's a cute idea and cws have a bit of a learning curve but they're very fun!

Thank you so much ;; We really appreciate that and I'm glad it seems like a good idea! We remade them, but before I toss them in, something's bothering me. The line thickness is thicker than the ones you made in your example, and the lines look a little blurry more than they look smooth. Is there anything we should do to improve before we send this new attempt in? I'd like to get your thoughts BEFORE submitting. ;_;

[edit] Nevermind! Wife misunderstood and upped the linesize to make everything fit, and I thought I'd made it clear that's why they wanted us to increase the canvas size to begin with. I'm gonna have her redo them again then come back with our new attempt. Thank you for the patience!

There's a couple things I can suggest for the shading but I'll wait for the new edit in case some of those are changed!

What do you need help with --- Shading? I'm not sure what to do to fix this. The CI is a whole other can of worms that I'm just gonna throw out and do something different with, but it's the overlay that's bugging me. It's not actually soft shaded, burnt or dodged, etc. but, it's so small and looks fine to me? How am I even supposed to fully shade something that small and have the layers of color visible? It's not a different technique than anything else I've drawn. Also, it IS shaded with the light source from the top left? it's supposed to be behind the head, in the hair like this: click click So, as far as I could tell the light source is good?

Was there a denial --- (paste denial here if any) not only is the shading soft, but the light source is coming from the wrong side. The light source on wearables needs to follow the same as the HA, which is from the top left.

What do you need help with --- I guess tips on how to have a better style i guess? i don't even know if I'll resubmit because, oof, having such a long list tearing apart my design, style, and telling me my art wasn't high enough quality kinda killed my motivation and made me feel like I suck pretty bad. But it'll still be helpful to me to get some tips on where to improve if I ever do feel up to trying again.

Was there a denial --- oh there's plenty

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Artwork does not match Subeta style, quality, or level of detail in general

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Shaky, rough, or inconsistent lineart

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Blunt/untapered lineart

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Thick or heavy lineart

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Sticker effect: flatness due to black lineart around the edges and colored or missing lineart inside

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Flat artwork

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Flat due to details being shaded individually without taking the entire form into account

ITEM AND OVERLAY: Not enough layers of shading (Subeta artwork should have 3-5 layers of shading)

Optional Can we take a look at the PSD files --- no Can we redline --- sure
