It's worth the try, we are giving hours of our time and money, it wouldn't be bad to get back sometimes when we need it.

We could in theory continue without a domain name; people would have to go to the direct numeric address 172.104.28.198 instead. (You can't do that right now,. because the security certificate and a few other things are linked to the subetalodge name, but it'd be easy work to unlink them from the name.)

I say we go ahead and switch over to the numeric address early. (Making everyone learn the numbers will make flipping the site upside down for a day seem like small potatoes. 👿 )

is it really as easy as all that? What about all the files, links, images, etc? I assume all of our graphics would have to be changed to a different address and the ones in use now would stop functioning? And those codes would all have to be changed? But that is nothing compared to having to change the url for thousands of pages.

: Lots of things would have to be changed, but they're all the same change -- replacing the domain name with the numeric IP address -- so we could automate the job. Probably wouldn't involve more than an hour or two of downtime.

We could only change our own links, though, so anyone using a widget or profile layout over here on Subeta would have to update it.

edit: Okay, we technically could do this, but it would be a terrible idea. Moving to a numeric address would leave the subetalodge.org name open for any malicious hacker who wanted it. They could put up a look-alike site laden with spyware and viruses that would nab anyone who didn't know about the change. Y'all may remember the drama back in 2007 when 'subeta.net' moved to 'subetax.org', then 'subeta.ws' and finally 'subeta.net' because Keith was a doofus? I don't want to put our members through that.

We live to toil another year. Thanks to the domain fees are paid for the year. I have told her how grateful I am for her coming to the rescue. I am sure you appreciate it too!

Reaper and I talked about it and the site will remain in my name. So long as Osterizer is willing to cover the cost of the server, until that can be covered another way, too.

So here is what I am thinking. I am going to make some kind of graphic something or other and ask O to make another default section on the right side of the newspage. The graphic (or someone have a better idea?) will say something about needing the users help and lead to a page briefly explaining the cost of the site. I will say that I have become disabled and ask if they can donate just one dollar to help keep us in business. I will be sure to reiterate that none of us are paid for working there.

We have a lot of users and hopefully we can get 150 of them to click the paypal button. And then 150 the next year, and so on. REally it would be great if the site became self-sustaining.

I will share the paypal info with O so there will be transparency with how much money we get.

So, this is my way to ask the public for help without doing a go fund me or something like that. My compromise, I guess.

I think that's a good compromise. Its really not begging. I've worked for charitable organizations and its really tough asking for help in any way - whether its money or services. You've already put in more than 10 years worth of time and money to help other people, with little to no personal reward. I don't think you should have to shoulder it all by yourself.

Also I agree with , there should be some planning and thought of what to do if we get more than expected.

I know it must seem odd that I'd cover the bigger expense of the server funding and not the smaller expense of the domain name funding, but I really think it's healthier for the site if it's not all dependent on a single source. If something terrible were to happen to that one person, the site needs a back-up plan. Thanks again for helping out! :) :)
