Well I had an interview this morning.. I'm trying to make plans for the afternoon to go to the beach, but all my friends seem to be busy.. so I think I'm gunna go to the gym in a little bit to get some cardio in and then hang out in my backyard this afternoon with a cold drink!

Do you really wanna hear about ALL of it? If so I'm happy to tell. It's just long xP

It might be therapeutic for me to write it out and help me make a decision.

So last Tuesday I met with the owner of a little place - let's call it US. A friend of mine works there and has for about a year so when I mentioned I was looking for work she suggested I apply there. The owner was really nice to me - she used to be an esthetician herself so she knows what it's like to actually work in a spa. My friend told me that she's a really fair boss, but sometimes can be kind of manipulative. I asked for weekends off and she said I could potentially have Saturdays off if I work on Sundays, which would mean my days off would be Tuesdays and Saturdays (they're closed on Tuesdays). Which really appeals since Nathan is off on the weekends and we could actually have a day off together. They're also ridiculously busy all the time so I'd have a full schedule, but it's MOSTLY pedicures, which after a few in a day my back is KILLING me.

I went back there today for a second interview to meet with the general manager. She asked what kind of wage I was looking for.. I mentioned that I make $17 now and couldn't really work for less than $15 and she said that they generally start their new gals at $13.50. And she seemed kind of shocked that I was potentially offered Saturdays off since they are looking for an evening and weekend gal. Said they have another interview today and then they'll be making decisions.

Last Tuesday I also met with another little spa and they really liked me as well, but it was just for a reception position.. which I'm not really interested in right now so I turned them down.

Yesterday I met with another spa.. let's call it RN. All through school I had wanted to work there.. just seemed like a good place all around. So I me with two of the managers yesterday and they also really seemed to like me. They said though that to start everyone for the first three months has to work all weekend every weekend out of fairness for the other staff and we could maybe reevaluate later on. They said that they'd likely pay me $15 plus 5% commission on services (would equate to like $17/hr minimum). It's potentially less busy as well, but there's more variety in services. I'd probably get to do some facials and body treatments as opposed to just pedis all day. I have a second interview with them on Monday to do a practical interview. The guy I met with yesterday said it was "just a formality" AKA they want me.

I'm just torn and don't know what to do.

Well personally is one person from US said you could have Saturdays off maybe and then another person said they were mainly looking for evenings/weekends thats a bit dodgy to start with, if it was the nice/manipulative woman who said that maybe she literally said that to get you to want to work there? That's literally kind of happening with Cherry rn she's just started working for like a DIY shop here and when she applied they said only weekends which is what she was interested in but she's been working all sorts of days in the week and weekends as well which isn't really what she wanted to do.

I know part of your job is weekends because they're busiest and I guess you would have known that when you were studying for it, I'd go with RN because it seems better, you'd make more money and your back wouldn't be hurting 99% of the time. Maybe once you've been there 3 months you can just ask for 1 weekend day off a month or something to spend with Nathan (although I know it's not a lot it's probably what they can stretch to do and probably sounds as fair as possible I guess!) and hopefully they will be down for that. If that's what inspired you through school then I'd say there, it'd feel so successful knowing you were working somewhere you WANTED to work from the start

Thanks for the opinion and advice! I'm really leaning toward RN. I have no official offers from either place.. but when I do get one I'm going to weigh out both the wage and schedule and see which I think will work better for my life.

Poor Cherry. I hate when employers lie. That's why I'm getting out of where I am now. Just lies ALL THE TIME.

Didn't end up going to the beach. I didn't even sit outside xP I hid inside from the heat all day watching Glee. I'm heading out very shortly though to grab dinner and a drink with a friend of mine!

I'm nosy and read everyone's posts and I agree completely. I too am shocked by how much employers (small businesses especially) lie to employees. It's really not fair. Large businesses are actually much more regulated and have policies in place, etc.

I agree RN seems like a better opportunity, especially if it's somewhere you've heard of and want to work at. A better job description and better pay? The only positive US has is scheduling, and it sounds like RN might negotiate on that later anyway. Besides at RN, you're no worse off than you are now. At US, you'd be taking a pay cut. I guess it all depends on what your priorities are! If the time off is absolutely critical to you, that's the only reason I can see to pick the other!

I'm sure he just need a little adjustment time, change is harder for animals than humans.

Feeling good now that it's almost the weekend (already!) job goes so fast these days. Today is treat thursday, so that's always a plus!

(It's not nosiness! Especially if you've been involved in the conversation ;))

Well someone spilled the beans to the owner about me looking for work, because she cornered me yesterday and wanted to "talk to me about my concerns" and I was pretty straight up. I told her I was concerned that we were going bankrupt given rumours and the fact that I have bill collectors calling on the phone and we missed a paycheck. A new law just passed a few weeks ago too where employers can no longer take any cut of your tips and yet she still does so I called her on that too and she condescendingly tried to show me how I was actually making more tips with the method they use and yadda yadda yadda. I felt like crap by the end of our talk.

With US there is definitely the potential to move up. It's a small company right now but it's REALLY growing and it's growing fast.. so the thought of being able to help open up a new shop or take on some leadership also really appeals. Not sure that RN would have that option available to me. They're pretty established and have their team set.

Still no official offers from anyone. Have my second interview at RN on Monday so I'll probably have a better feel for things after then. If US calls today and offers something I'll make sure to get all the specifics so I can compare it to RN on Monday.. and I'll let them know I can call them back early in the week.

I can't wait for next week to be over. Then I have a week of vacation, off to NYC!
